  1. The Black Keys - Brothers - easily my favorite. Like most, I'm liking The National and Band of Horses. Unlike most, I really like the DBT album.

    others that I like:

The Whigs - In the Dark

    Eels - End Times

Deer Tick - Black Dirt Sessions

    Spoon - Transference

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings - I Learned the Hard Way

Henry Clay People - Somewhere on the Golden Coast

    Glossary - Feral Fire

Johnny Cash - Ain't No Grave

Otis Gibbs - Joe Hill's Ashes

    Austin Collins - Wrong Control

Alejandro Escovedo - Street Songs of Love

Hold Steady - Heaven is Whenever

  2. Mediocre piece of work. The lyrics seem especially lazy. Nice first half, than fades into nothingness and banality. I'm not saying the lyrics are incredibly important for this band. What I am saying is the lyrics come off like they didn't give a shit.

    You no like?

  3. I was at the Pearl Jam/Band Of Horses show in DC/Northern VA Thursday night and BOH covered "Can't Hardly Wait" by the Mats. Maybe that's something they do often, but I was happily surprised.

oh man, I'd love to hear their take on it.

I am loving the new album. It is likely my favorite of theirs. I definitely like it better than the last one.

edit... here's a nice version: BoH Can't Hardly Wait You tube

  4. i like it a lot, but it's one of their weaker full lengths for me.

however, based on the title of his post (ie: banjo) i can see what he meant, they traded the banjo & acoustic guitars for a mostly piano driven affair this time.

Yes, probably my only complaint about the new one. I like it quite a bit. With the exception of a couple of songs (including title track), I listen to it quite a bit. That said, the absence of banjo is sorely missed.

  5. How about Langhorne Slim's Be Set Free? I love it for some of the same reasons I like the Avett Brothers.

Let me second Mumford & Sons and also Deer Tick--definitely pick up Born on Flag Day. It's a little grungier than the Avetts, but terrific.

All of this! Langhorne Slim is an underrated artist. Love his stuff.

Mumford & Sons is less on the bluegrassy stuff and heavier on the indie but they do bring the banjo.

Deer Tick Born on Flag Day and their EP are great stuff.

You may also like some early Marah and maybe some AA Bondy.

  6. Really, they haven't put out a bad album: they're all solid. And I agree with the see them live comments because they're great live. My favorites in order:

    That Much further West

    Tennesse

    1372 Overton Park

    Nobody's Darling

    Rebels, Rogues and Sworn Brothers

    Lucero

    The Attic Tapes

Can't do a whole lot of arguing with that list. I absolutely love the new one but don't necessarily think it's the place to start. Oh, and the guy can sing... not everyone's bag, but he can sing.
