  1. If you chopped the late Greats quote in half it would be brilliant, ending with "The best laugh never leaves your lungs"

    My suggestion would be

"I have no idea how this happened, all of my plans have been overthrown"

  2. I was just listining to the New Orleans gig thanks to the kind soul who uploaded it :thumbup and something struck me. Just after he stops singing and before the whistling bit, the first few notes of the guitar are eerily similar to California stars, so much in fact that I though they had segwayed into it, alas they hadn't. I think it'd fit very well into an encore with a instant shock factor with it. They do tend to play California stars as a last song so I think it'd be a great way to introduce it. Thoughts?

  3. It would make it more difficult for people to post torrents of shows a month later. I think if someone is doing a service to the other members then they shouldn't have to go searching to threads to post an audio link. In other words, I think a future age should stay

  4. I'm well aware of problems in Ireland, and he may or may not have personal experiences with terrorism, but this doesn't negate the fact that there is cause for fear here among some people. Americans are "insanely stupid" to fear terrorism doesn't gibe with me. There is recent history in the U.S. to easily validate any fears people might have.

I'd hardly call 6 years ago recent and personally speaking I think it is insanely stupid. Britain has a much worse problem with such an integrated Islamic population and they still manage everything alright, but in America there are so comparitively few arabs and muslims(probably due in no small part to racism) and no terrorist attack in years, despite giving them reason to attack with ridiculous prison sentences over non-Americans. 4 British men arrested for 2 years in Afghanistan? How is that America's buisiness? Harsh measures like that are insanely stupid

  5. No argument with the rest of your screed ... though I'd make one observation about your "American tourists" item: British tourists really aren't any better.

Luckily I'm Irish and everyone loves us. Jeff loved us enough not to cancel his gigs here, yet :thumbup

In fairness to them, with the exception of France, where Brits tend to try and piss off the locals, they are a little better

  6. An Irishman's opinion of what's wrong with America in order.

Number 1: American Extremists- There is nothing more annoying than an American who believes in something utterly proposterous like Evangelicals and the such. Personally, I'd much rather run into an Islam extremist than an Evangelical one.

Number 2:American tourists- American's make very bad tourists. They talk too loud, don't speak the language and tend to want to eat the exact same thing as they'd get at Sal's diner at home, despite the fact that they're on the Champs Elysee.

Number 3: The term African-American- Thay are BLACK, not African-American.Not all Blacks come from Africa. Take Obama for instance, he won't be the first Afircan-American President, he's from Hawaii. Hell, he's not even black

Number 4: American Soccer Commentators- First off, it's FOOTBALL. Also, if the commentator gets really really really excited it doesn't transcend to the viewer. The presentation is so slick and good in the UK and Ireland but across the pond it's impossible to watch. I feel for you guys.

Number 5:American accents that end everything in a question mark-It's really annoying?

Number 6:America and Islam- Not only is this a political problem but a problem on the ground. How can American's be so scared of an attack? It's insanely stupid. The chances of it happening to you are so small and I would guarantee you that there are maximum 7 States that terrorists would attack. Just move to Hawaii and be happy. Also, I hate any American who booed the Iranian President. An intelligent world leader comes to speak in supposedly the 3rd best college in the world and gets booed out the building. Would not happen in Oxford or Cambridge.

Number 7:Cancelling Firefly- God damn you Fox (could be an Australian problem but I'm running out of things)

Number 8:Perception that everyone likes Americans- Funny one this. Americans always think that they are welcomed everywhere with unconditional love but tend to be spoken off in less higher esttem behind their backs. Not like us Irish :)

Number 9:Tyra Banks and America's Next Top Model-None of those girls ever reach the top yet Tyra and her minions take up endless TV Square time

Number 10:The need for Americans to make their own versions of British Tv Shows- Why, the Office is perfect, American office not so much and I suspect the I.T. Crowd will go the same way. Some things are better in Britain, sitcoms being one. Could you imagine if they remade Father Ted ?

    P.S. I'm Sorry :)

  7. I see my mistake. You're right. It's a way better form for both those people to accuse the band of not appreciating their UK fans (after xxxxx shows they played there over the past years), and for the band to randomly cancel various UK gigs only to annoy their devoted UK fans. I'm sure they had no important reason whatsoever and are wetting themselves laughing now about how they deliberately fooled their fans for no other reason than their own fun.

    My bad :)

It is your bad . One of the reasons people are so annoyed is that there has been no good reason they've cancelled their gigs and unless you're the 7th member of Wilco I don't see how you can assume there was a perfectly good reason considering none has been mentioned. Also, as the Brits have pointed out, it's not so much for lack of gigs in the UK, it's lack of regional gigs. How would you like if they just played Washington and let the rest of the country down? I'm from Ireland and the last time they played here is 4 years ago and the last time they played regional England was 2003 aswell, and that was a one-off gig in one place. Not exactly appreciating their fans outside of London, let alone in the other FOUR COUNTRIES in the British Isles

  8. The 10th would be a bit too close for comfort to the 14th and 15th for me. Surely they wouldn't cancel a sold-out gig. Bringing my sister for her 18th as a surprise, surprise they cancelled would be an anticlimax. Sorry for you guys across the pond anyway. I'm sure they'll bring the tour over again soon

  9. i don't hear you saying that you can't believe we are bothering to watch US men's soccer.

cryptique also hit on something, the marketing and tools/equipment still isn't available to women and definitely walk into a sporting goods store. i'd love to not have to dig for shin guards that fit me and aren't pink. that's not making an excuse against the women. he and i are both saying it's a great sport to watch regardless of who is playing and is even better to see the strides that are being made in women's sports considering how few opportunities have been available.

and again, saying something is different is not saying one is better than the other. and it is frustrating to be in a dialogue about enjoying a sport and have someone say because it's women it's not as good. quite frankly that's just crap.

First of all, I'd be surprised if you did watch MLS. It's a shocking league and LA Galaxy are looking like they're repeating the mistakes that the league made in the 70's. MLS is full of european league rejects like Donovan, Xavier and Angel and has 1 truly gifted player in Beckham but the amount that he's earning shows how little the MLS has progressed.

Most people in Europe feel that America has focused on the Women's game because their male team is so far behind (I have lived in England and Italy and this is a common trend of thought) so for me it's a surprise that women can't get the products but you could just as easily by shin pads for hockey and use them. The reason so few oppurtunities are there is because outside of the States, most football fans don't care for Women's football. 4 (Italy, Argentina, Spain and France) of the main fotballing powers have still not tried to avance their female teams.

Also in fairness, America is a country where Political correctness has invaded media and the population so much that it's not really acceptable to say that the women's game isn't as skillfull. Like the Marta clip was very impressive take a look at this

I have told my friends that they might wanna check Marta out but they thought I was taking the piss, so I'm sympathetic to the challenge facing you but eventually America might have to wake up that when faced with the choice of which to watch, a top flight game in the premiership or a female league, most football fan's will choose the man's game so their probably isn't a great need for a women's proffessional league. If there was, it'd probably have to be designed to cater for women solely and further alienate men from the game

  10. you might think it's not sexist, but being a woman that watches and plays soccer (and was quite devestated when women's professional soccer folded), i take a bit offense to it. it is still a rather skewed attitude to show regardless of if you call it sexist or not. women's soccer is a different game than men's. i feel i am justified in saying that having been the only woman on a "coed" team and learning the nuances between the difference in play. each is worthy of watching for different reasons and merit. to say you can't understand why watch women when you can watch men, well, it does sound sexist.

That's not exactly correct. The Women's game is not "different" infact, it's practically the same but the referees are stricter. As for can't undesrtand why I'd watch men and not women, I dont watch MLS or anything lower than second tier football in Europe because the standard is so poor. For the same reason I don't watch Women's FOOTBALL. Marta is amazing (sorry bout the original spelling) but she's just 1 player. Generally speaking the defending is shocking (I will accept that that was a hint of sexism but is for the most part true) and the Goalkeeping is absolutely atrocious,I rarely see a shot that is hit to the side of a keeper and on target not go in.I really think the women's game could do with smaller posts. The club game is also in need of a revamp, the female first division in England is probably the least competitive tournament in the world and Arsenal are European champs.

Please understand that I have watched a good few women's matches in the last year, the FA cup final which was 9-1 or something stupid and a couple of world cup matches which were all one sided (bar England- Germany which was crap). The 2 legs of the European final were good but that's cos it was Martha against a well organised team (with a male manager) so the defense was alot more organised than usual. As for you're all-sex team, fair play, I'd have alot of respect for that as I would for all women who like football. Mainly so that when I'm using my Irish charm on them I don't have to pretend I love their shoes and reassure them that red really is their colour, instead I can debate whether Chelsea should have sacked Jose etc.

The reason why I only sparingly watch Women's football is because in all fairness, it's not great. You said it's a different game but it's not. It just sounds like you're looking for a different way to say it's worse
