  1. Nick Drake - Pink Moon is such a beautiful recording. 'you can create your own universe with just a vocal and a guitar'

That is an out of the park comment about this album. I love it - the album and the comment.

Your article is great, but it's also dated. Who do you think Jeff would add to the list in late 2009?

    Neil Finn for starters...

  2. Also that was the Tweedy solo show at the Moore. Given that the Seahawks were playing in their first-ever Superbowl a little hometown enthusiasm wasn't that surprising. I forget his exact put-down but it was priceless along the lines of "This is a folk show. Imagine going to see Donovan in the late sixties and shouting out for Man Utd". Funny and erudite. And good know you can have a big knowledge of sports and of music.

That's right, at the Paramount, I don't remember anything negative about the crowd at all.

The Moore show is also where the guy yelled out "Jeff, I love you man", now memorialized on DVD.

I just checked the Royal Theatre's site, and the main floor is essentially sold out, just a few strays, and about half the balcony is left.

  3. I'm nervous that the Victoria crowd will be superlame, a la Vancouver 2004, where Jeff consistently mocked us all for remaining seated the entire evening and even went so far as doing an impression of the slouched gentleman in the first row who he assured us Glenn was painting between songs. laugh.gif

I'll be at Seattle too, which I'm really excited for... never been to the Paramount, after all these years!

Too much mellowness here in the Pacific NW sometimes at shows, eh? Jeff made fun of a Spokane crowd I was in a couple of summers ago for the same kind of thing.

I'll do my part to get fired up in Victoria, indeed. Someone might toss some naan at me for trying to stand. I don't think the Seattle crowd will be mellow, with the floor seats gone in the Paramount. We won't have any option but to stand up. It was really enthusiastic last time in the same situation. At least Jeff didn't complain about us, except for taking note of the strong herbal order that he thought was being piped into the place.

  4. I said 2nd row, not row B. wink.gif

It looks like the Wilco show @ the Olympics is a full Wilco show, as it's advertised as being from 7-11pm (which shoots down any hopes I have of getting back to the island that night), but I suppose wandering around for 6 hours until the first bus out wouldn't be the worst thing in the world...(if I can't find accommodations, that is)

Lucky you on the seats! When I was offered these seats, I didn't want to mess around and refresh the seat selection hoping to get even closer. I was not ready for that gamble, no way, especially after trying to get floor seats in Portland. I'll gladly take the 6th row and tell you guys to sit down in front and throw extra bits of naan at you from Da Tandoor if you don't comply.

Really though, I hope we are on our feet alot, and I'm glad to hear the Vangroovey show is a full length one. I jumped to the conclusion that it would be more of a 'variety' concert.

If you do run around town until dawn, you may want to not focus on hanging around Hastings!

  5. Da Tandoor at 1010 Fort St.?

That's it, for sure. I've got to go back there again.

Just found this, and the 10 minute walk, slow service, and unprepossessing facade confirmed it. But the food was really amazing....>

    Frommer's Review

The best of Victoria's several Indian restaurants, Da Tandoor hides itself behind an unprepossessing facade on the outer edge of Fort Street's antiques row, near Café Brio, Med Grill, and J&J Wonton Noodle House. The cuisine is well worth the 10-minute walk from downtown. Tandoori chicken, seafood, and lamb and fish curries are the house specialties; but the extensive menu also includes masalas, vindaloos, and goshts, and classic appetizers like samosas and papadums. If you get inspired to try it at home, the restaurant sells a wide variety of spices and chutneys. Decor is nothing special, and service can sometimes be slow.

  6. Maybe, the popularity of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver is inevitable given Canadians love for Winter Sports but what a rip off for ordinary folks. ....... I had this ill-founded, romantic notion we could go up for one weekend for a once-in-a-lifetime type experience and while expensive, it wouldn't mean we had to re-mortgage the house. So much for that.

I too had this romantic vision of at least attending a curling event, if not ski jumping. Then I saw what the ski jumping tickets cost ($2K, I think), if you were lucky enough to get them, and the curling tickets weren't that much cheaper. I'm out.....

I am hoping some of that Olympic spirit carries across the water to Victoria. It should be a kick - you Victorians have a fun city there. Now what was that amazing Indian place I ate at a few years ago - it was east of downtown, on Fort or Pandora? Suggestions for good Indian food in Victoria are appreciated.

  7. Me too! I got BB 15/16, right between Jeff and Nels!

After much soul-searching, delaying leaving for a month is probably a wise decision for me regardless... and now I get to see Wilco in Victoria!

I'm wasn't trying to give you too much grief about the two good choices of Barcelona or Wilco. We just booked the Victoria Clipper and a place for the night, so see ya there!

  8. I'd be very surprised if it is Grizzly Bear. Seattle sold out. The question is now whether we do Victoria and then try and go to Vancouver for the free show. Problem being that because of the Winter Olympics that trying to stay in VAncouver on Saturday night will be nigh impossible. Dear listeners, any suggestions on how to bum a coach for the night.

There are still very good deals on hotels in Victoria, considering the Olympics are not far away. Also, it has my favorite microbrew/restaurant on the planet - Spinnakers. Forget about Vancouver, everybody's buddy wants a couch then, unless you have a really, really good friend there. My contacts there are overwhelmed by all the 'friends' coming out of the woodwork who need a couch. And besides, the show in Victoria will probably blow away the more limited set they will be confined to in Vancouver. How many other bands are playing for the free show? Lots, I expect. Plus all the yeah hoos in the crowd who don't give a rip about Wilco....

  9. Aaagh, I can't believe how conflicted I feel. I don't think I can reasonably postpone moving to Barcelona another month and not hate myself, but I've been waiting so freakin long for Wilco to come to Victoria. Then again, I've seen them four times, and what if it was somehow cancelled? It would have to be the most amazing show ever to make that extra month worthwhile... GAH.

It's hard to feel too sorry for you if the other alternative is Barcelona! pirate.gif Happy Halloween!

  10. I'm curious how they intend on getting to Vancouver for the show the next day -- surely all ferries are booked, especially with the buses they'd need to accommodate? Or do Wilco have ways of making things happen...

Given their invitation to an official Olympic concert, I'm sure they will get their equipment on the ferry rides they need. As for the band, float plane sounds more likely....

  11. Some months ago there was a link on Via Chicago to video from an outdoor show from early Wilco, with Jay Bennett, at a ski hill in Canada (and it wasn't Whister, that's for sure, but some small place in Newfoundland or Quebec, I believe). It was great, but I can't find it on the many pages of Jay's memorial comments, although I know it's there somewhere. If anyone can lead me back to it, I'd appreciate it. Not exactly bootleg audio. but great video that I'd recommended highly to all, if only I could find it again. Any leads are appreciated.

  12. D'Oh.. Didn't mean that, I love Michael. He kicked ass at the 08 REM Show at Jones Beach, in the pouring rain. Just prefer Jeff these days.

Sorry, it was just a lob pitch ;)

I've only seen the Venus 3 and Minus 5 recently, but I'm sure I'd enjoy REM. I haven't seen REM as a band since 1985. I doubt I'd enjoy REM as much as Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 though, in part because of the small club venue where they played here last weekend, versus arena rock.

  13. I was logged in and waiting for both pre-sales and the general sale and still had to settle for middle balcony. What the f#%@! do you have to do to get a good seat through ticketmaster. I looked again this morning and couldn't get any seats anywhere. Stub hub has people scalping for a minimum of $75. I saw a pair of dress circle tix for $93 each. I was tempted to grab them and sell mine. I'm ready to go back to the stone age where we have to wait in line overnight and get our tix right now. No more 35 attempt via the ticketmaster website to get average seats the minute they go on sale.

    Man i'm bitchy!

For good reason, the Portland show was the worst I've experienced in a long time for trying to get decent seats. It's a nice place to see a show, but ticketheister sure does suck with the games they play. I got lucky with that one ticket, all the others offered were pretty lame.

Invisiblegirl - I'd keep trying every once in awhile, maybe they'll release some more. Or maybe the Schnitzer box office?!?
