  1. there was and is good in it; and while it may not seem crucial to some now, it is likely to become crucial if our course doesn't alter and maybe if it does. i also agree about jobs not being shipped overseas. in fact, although i've been at via chicago for only ten months, i love you analogman! not just because of stuff i agree with. i try to be straightforward, sometimes think i succeeded, and then you post.
  2. there's no quote setup on reply when your whole post was inside a quote, so i'll just wing it. quickly. you're right that there's nothing wrong with agreeing to disagree, and i then went on and tried to change your mind, which i'm sorry for. (plus it's exhausting!) uw, please read my fox news mention again. i didn't say that you watch fox news, never mind assumed that you watch it exclusively. i have no idea what you watch. what you wrote simply reminded me of the stuff on fox news. it was a comparison. why i intend to vote for obama is in posts all over these recent politica
  3. thanks for the tip, but i'm planning to just cover it with newspapers and call it art.
  4. um, what are you talking about? i haven't asked the mirror question of anyone, no, not one person. just had it asked of me by the gentleman caliber. ask HIM if it's constructive.
  5. uw: "based on what?...hope?...change? obama has shown himself to be a bumbling goof at times. his speeches are vacuous exercises in nothingness, his convictions change depending on his audience and his lack of experience shows like his fly is perpetually open. sorry, i have absolutely no confidence in this man whatsoever and i'm certainly not alone in feeling that way. i'm sure world leaders everywhere are salivating at the prospect of a u.s. president ripe to be pushed around." we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. i think your view of obama is one i can turn on fox news and hea
  6. viatroy, please run for office! your last sentence reminds me of this from eisenhower and i've always liked it: "I think that people want peace so much that one of these days government had better get out of their way and let them have it."
  7. it isn't easy. my mirror's getting kind of tired and recalcitrant. but hey, at least i question myself, even in public.
  8. u.w., although i've discovered that i agree with you at times, i am mighty glad you're not in d.c. with your finger on that button. ohmy.gif what button?, the nuclear button? i never called for that and i wouldn't. that's a bit extreme, dont you think? ________ yah, sorry, it sounds extreme, but i meant it figuratively and not literally. it's a throwback phrase (i'm old, i guess), and i shouldn't have used it. also, i was half kidding. but the part of me that wasn't kidding was reacting to your post above a ways, talking about iran as if all attempts at diplomacy have been tried
  9. yes, especially gore, and i'll always regret giving my vote that year to nader. yep, i confess! it was a worthless vote. worse than worthless, actually. the hindsight thing gets me at least once a day.
  10. i didn't nominate them, and hey, let's face it: the commander and his ship are a disaster. they should have been ousted years ago. and if you take a long hard look -- or even a short easy look -- the signs were there very early on. i more than understand that it's easier for a person like "jules" to throw unthinking crap at people on a message board who can't stand what's happened to our country than it is to actually look at it and try to do something constructive to salvage the mess, but you know, to your pal: please consider growing up. even a little bit might help, ya never know
  11. oh that's nice. p.s. thank you for putting and keeping this administration in office.
  12. it's likely i'll agree with this, but what do you mean by "form" in a political party (such as democrats)?
  13. thanks everybody. if only 1 or 2 posts, i'd be afraid to give it a shot, but it sounds okay to do. i've been using firefox for a couple of years now and haven't once considered going back to i.e. or safari. firefox has been a big cut above all others since i first discovered it. why didn't it just appear as a new software update? (i have an imac.) i seem to remember it did before, but maybe this is a whole new ballgame. if all the bookmarks disappeared, i'd have a coronary. they're longtime bookmarks. but analogman's post gives confidence. will try it now.
  14. i'd say second stage: Nervous system symptoms of secondary syphilis, which can cause headaches, stiff neck, vision or hearing problems, irritability, paralysis, unequal reflexes, and irregular (different-sized) pupils. signed, dr. sweetheart
  15. ah, he did, didn't he. i heard so little about it -- probably a snippet on colbert! -- that i forgot. since paul wellstone (on war), he's been the only person in congress who has the courage to tell it like it is about this administration. i keep saying this on this board, but i cannot understand why most of our own congress keeps throwing us under the bus. yah, money and power, but there has to be more to it. why would they keep doing it when they're in danger of losing their jobs as it is with their longtime low approval ratings.
  16. ugh. you know, he wasn't bad as a president, but he's really bad as a sore loser -- actually was as a campaigner for his wife too, so one can only imagine what kind of campaigner he'd be for obama. bill has become a bit fried, and i really think they should send him off to tahiti for a long vacation, long as in until after november 4.
  17. here is a list that was gathered during my state's efforts beginning in 2006 to impeach bush and cheney, and then added to by a great independent who ran against our go-along-with-the-crowd democratic rep in 2006 (and lost). this list could no doubt be added to again by now, but here it is, for anyone who doesn't think bush and cheney belong in prison to consider. almost every state, by the way, has had multiple impeachment efforts going at least since 2004; state legislatures do have the power to try to convince the u.s. congress to begin impeachment proceedings. it's not going to happ
  18. gone all day and evening and look what's happened. more pages. but really, i'm getting a lot out of these discussions and am thankful for this forum. need to reread today's posts here but have two things to say at the moment: u.w., although i've discovered that i agree with you at times, i am mighty glad you're not in d.c. with your finger on that button. also: of course it's hard to negotiate. it's very hard. it takes a lot of strength, vision, time, diplomacy, honest listening, honest goals, psychological perceptiveness, and more. and i think you're mistaken to assume that
  19. wow, thank you for this. i really like your reasons: "... accepting it made me a better and happier person and ... the example that Jesus Christ set of compassion, love and sacrifice was the best way to live life." the jesuits' founder defining belief as a sacrifice of reason is, i think, why some of us cannot and/or do not want to do it (believe). but your reasons seem to me, well, reasonable. and honorable. i don't think -- this is in general -- that believers are better people than others (and i know you didn't say that), but many do seem happier, and during the more despairing t
  20. very interesting post. i'm wondering, if you see religion as a creation of man (i agree), how you conceive of god? i mean, you clearly believe in god's existence -- even perfection -- so can you say what the relationship is between him and religion as you see it? i'm asking for interest's sake only. if religion isn't actually related to god or what brought you to believe in god, how did you come to believe in god and his perfection? (or someone like you, if you'd prefer not to get into it!) while in presbyterian sunday school as a kid in poughkeepsie, i was in a group of little kid
  21. coming in from the side here: i'm starting to get where you're coming from on this, i think, but with this post i have trouble separating "how someone's belief in god is expressed" from the belief itself. belief isn't external or objective, so how do people understand belief without people's expression of it?
  22. 3-year-olds in america being taught yoga and meditation! wow! that is out-of-this-world fantastic. you just made my day. we don't have kids, but if we did i'd have to ask you where you live and move the family there. also, kudos to you for your openness in general. to dash any impression that i'm a master yogi or meditator: i'm only an admirer, and occasional participant. my mind could still use a lot of work. i love this thread.
