I still smell tobacco on my fingers
My breath reeks of pot and wine and sex
My eyes open up like they haven’t in years
So I won’t miss whatever happens next
You call me a thief
All right, I'm a thief
Grab a summons
Come and ring my bell
I’ll be making love with my baby
In the Chelsea Hotel
I told you to meet me at eight o’clock
I said I’ll be drinking at the bar
I drove between Newark and Laguardia
Trying to return a rented car
We keep missing connections today
But tomorrow would be just as well
I gotta go make love with my baby
In the Chelsea Hotel
I’ve been walking all around your neighborhood
My former love
You seem as far away and as sad to me
As those rain clouds above
I hope you’re happy and whatever you're doing
I hope you're doing well
And please don’t try to contact me
At the Chelsea Hotel
I was starting to think
The world was going to end when the calendar turns
But now you’re here
I see the future, baby
And they can let the calendar burn
New love is beautiful
But new love is sad
New love brings back all the old loves
That you’ve ever had
I put out a casting call
And you cast a spell
And we’re practicing for the millennium
Making love at the Chelsea Hotel
So who knows what tomorrow brings
But I know where I’ll be waking up
Let’s just listen to our breath tonight
And the breeze through the window that you opened up
Can you feel our hearts beating
Which one's yours
Which one's mine
Y' can't tell
Just another day of making love
At the Chelsea Hotel
Spent all day making love
At the Chelsea Hotel

I know we've discussed all of this a million times over, but there's almost an entire other album's worth of "unreleased" songs that can nearly stand toe to toe with the album proper. "Cars Can't Escape," "Venus Stopped The Train," "Magazine Called Sunset," "Not For The Season," "Won't Let You Down," to name a few. Most bands never write songs of the caliber of these in a lifetime and yet for Wilco, they were tossed off largely. Not too mention all of those unbelievably great early versions and alternate versions of eventual YHF tracks. That uptempo "Poor Places" is a great what might've been. The instrumental jams forming early skeletons of still undeveloped songs are a cool sneak peak into the inner workings of the band. The multitude of takes on "Kamera" are all worthwhile, and in the case of the big guitar rock version, something I'd like to see more of from Wilco. I mean top to bottom with the album and both demos you're talking about around 25 songs that are just about all superb. That eventual box set is gonna blow minds of those out there who have still yet to hear all that was left behind. Just unbelievable!
My sentiments exactly!!!

"Black Happy" made quite splash in Spokane,WA...a music scene that is pathetically ane
mic....back in the early nineties.....
they were funky ska types with a full horn section...

Arlo's a nice guy.....with a good talent for song. but he leans towards Goodman and Prine style of writing
I'm glad he did not have the opportunity........he's too close from the source.

I think DM is evolving better with his songwriting at this point better than Jeff.....

Overall, months later, I've gone from initially being completely unimpressed with the album-- to liking the album somewhat-- to not ever listening to the album. I am hoping they'll release some live material so I can hear the music live again. I think that will perhaps garner more enthusiasm for the particular songs I do like. I would love a good clear quality version of You and I, sans Feist. I never ever got into Su(o)nny feeling.
Overall this album is just not strong in my opinion. After a hundred plus listens, it feels simplistic and repetitive and, at times, annoying. I've got the Vinyl that I'll spin from time to time, but I doubt it'll stay in my playlists. I'm hoping they do some more Loose Fur, Autumn Defense, and various side project material to get away from Wilco for a while and get the creative juices flowing a little more.
It's definately Jeff's album.....It's one he wanted to make.......(heard that one before?)........I'm sad.....

The first recorded "live" version of this (forgot exact date)song remains my favorite version.......really nice.

Curiosity?
This album lacks a very urgent sense of curiosity......there is nothing for me to go back to and WANT to explore it further.....that is my feeling right now.......
And such talented musicians (Kotche,Cline and Stirrat) used to virtually zero effect......what a waste.

"moonlight Drive" is perhaps one of the greatest rock songs ever......
The Philadelphia 1970 release was pretty good.
and the song "love me two times" takes on a whole new meanining when you throw "St. James Infimary" in to it....
