I went back to A.M. after listening to WTA..... The problem is in the sound mixes . Every song on WTA has a muddied sameness to it.....which detracts from some decent lyrics. On A.M., The drums and Henneman's leads are brightly up front punctuating the lyrics........on that reason alone.......A.M. is the better record.

I continue to like the album alot and have some of the tunes stuck in my head. I wish three things however....
1. More Nels
2. More Glenn
3 Less of Pat playing repetitive triplets.
LouieB
1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Pat's limitations are painfully clear........Jay or Leroy would have made shadings of music quite complex to make the lyrics pop......
instead of "pap"

Thanks to all previously who had the guts to post in this thread.......all of you have hit on the nagging sense of where Wilco has been......and where it's going.
Wilco is Jeff Tweedy........no malice intended. I get the sense that since Jeff got "well"......the creative sand in the ointment....(i.e. forceful input by others has been replaced by a sense of "people not wanting to lose their gig" so they play along as opposed to contributing forcefully what the lyrics need in it's musical muscle ......that requires independent thought from all band members.Playing to Jeff is fine.....if it works. Playing to challenge (the band as a whole) ultimately satisfies fans so much more........

This is all a guess. I've heard that folks really good at math make great musicians and great musicians can easily become great mathematicians (and computer programmers). having seen dylan in concert almost 20 times (I have lost track at this point), he rarely plays a song the same way twice. Half the time I have to wait for the lyrics to figure out what in the world it is. I wonder if what they are doing by mathematically deconstructing/reconstructing the music is looking at what was originally written and then shifting the counts, adjusting the key, and all together affecting the rhythm and nature of the song. the math side of music is that every song has a count structure, every note holds a certain number of beats, and there is a mathematical formula in chord structure (how many steps between the notes in a cord determines what chord you are playing, change one step and you have a whole different sound. maybe they don't look at it musically, but are instead making the adjustments to how they play the songs strictly by the numbers behind the music and not the sound of the music itself. TOTALLY A GUESS!!!
You could be describing Jay Bennett hear as well. Kot's book describes Jay's approach to piano the frst time as mathematical.......fascinating .....

Jay's last show with Wilco is still my all time favorite............pure raw Jay energy. The man had spunk!
I'd love a complete DVD of that show......Jay probably figured the hammer was coming down......and to Jeff's credit, the music came first that night.....

Hands down, my favorite part of the movie is the Cars Can't Escape segment, when they're playing the track on a crappy CD player. When the noise comes in, and Jeff and Jay both 'cue' it at the same time. Very cute.
I get goose bumps every time I see that scene......great song .....should've been on YHF if at all at least "hidden'' on the end.

Some one compares the Tweedy/Bennett relationship to Lennon/McCartney.
Is that any one of YOU?
