That's one of the things about the demise of the local, indie record stores that really sucks the most: the thrill of walking in the door and hearing something new and exciting. Buying it. And taking it home, only to have it become one of your all-time favorites. What are the albums that you discovered like that? And where did you discover them (if you can remember)? Guided By Voices - Alien Lanes (at Blackout Records, on Southport in Chicago) Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island (also at Blackout) Eels - Electro-Shock Blues (Laurie's Planet of Sound on Lincoln Ave. in Chicago) I'll try to

I received it as a get well gift from a friend after I had some surgery a few years ago. The concert footage alone is worth it.

Just before moving out to the 'burbs, my wife and I lived in a neighborhood right near where the Gov. lives. Now, his neighborhood is really pretty -- right on a lovely wooded stretch of the river -- and my wife and I liked to take walks through there every now and then. A couple of weeks ago, I was out to lunch with Cary, in that old neighborhood, so I decided to show him where we used to walk. We were on our way back to a birthday party a little ways away, so we were in the car. Anyway, was was telling him stories about the old 'hood, and that where we were driving right then was right ne

It's a video, only about 10:00 long; and very engaging. http://idolator.com/5243982/see-there-is-a-way-to-make-people-care-about-rock-criticism-again Dig it.

I'm sorry. I know that we all like what we like, and I don't mean to sound judgmental, but this statement is just very, very sad to me. Although, I suppose that I can understand it from a strictly nostalgic point of view, as you were hinting toward in your original post. If you mean musically... [snob] allow me to introduce you to The Buzzcocks and The Ramones [/snob]

My 10-year-old's favorite band is Green Day. He loves them. I played Buzzcocks for him last night. His reaction? "Oh, this is totally who Green Day want to be!"

Today: "That Summer Feeling" by Jonathan Richman

I fully expect it to come out on top. And while I do also love the album, there is a certain burnout factor that has eliminated it from contention for me, atleaa least for a top-10 spot.

Well then, that needs to change, doesn't it? Check out Joe Pisapia's MySpace page for streaming samples of his music. I'm pretty sure that you'll love it, judging by your picks. He is a part-time member of Guster, but Daydreams is more Nick Drake/Elliott Smith than power pop.

Yeah, I know that there's still almost half of '09 left, but it is just about time for the "Best of the Decade" lists. What are some of your (early) contenders? Some of my contenders: Joe Pisapia - Daydreams Nick Cave - Abbatoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus Webb Brothers - Maroon Raphael Saadiq - The Way I See It Tom Zé - Estuando o Pagode The Format - Dog Problems
-
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister Bob Elliott - Simple Machines The Format - Dog Problems Roy Wood & Wizzard - Archive Series

Iron Maiden.

Just wanted to bump this thread, because I found Month of Sundays at Amazon for something like $0.64! If you're a fan of The Left Banke, The Kinks, Cardinal, or any of that orc-pop stuff, this is (IMO) one of the best albums of the new millennium. (For fans of The Millennium, too!) I do hope that we hear something new from these guys at some point.

The Left Banke - There's Gonna Be a Storm The Staple Singers - Best Of... Uncle Tupelo - No Depression The Kinks - Something Else My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

Damn. No Chicago show. I saw OCMS last year, and they pretty much blew me away. as to where to start with them: Start with the self-titled (O.C.M.S.) -
Hop On Pop - Chicken on a Bicycle (current mixes)

Local, St. Louis band, circa 1988-1991, or so. Funk/punk stuff a-la the Chili Peppers. Good musicians that put on a really fun high-energy show. Their big song (with the fans) was something called "Bop Apocalypse". Just heard it recently for the first time since then. And, really, it's not so good. But it was fun at the time.

So, I guess then, that you remember The Unconscious?
