So Called Star - So Called Star So Called Star has some pretty solid songs. They also got the chops. And they have a monster guitar sound. Think Blue Album-era Weezer and you are beginning to get the point. Big, crunchy guitars backing up fist-pumping choruses, with just a touch of fine whine paired nicely with the angst. Lamrod: you say that "Azin" is your favorite tune on the album and it's one of my favorites, too. The herkey-jerkey riffage grabbed me and shook me around a little. I also dug "Another Day In Paridise" and "Silver Lining". But, my #1 favorite song on the album is definitely

np: So Called Star - So Called Star [aka Ed Rooney's (Lamrod's) band] Pretty cool in a Weezer sorta way!

The link DID work. Just got it. Thanks. I'll give it a listen sometime today.

How is this? What's it like?

My 10-year-old decided to get back into playing guitar, and so he used the money he'd been saving for an iPod Touch to pick this up, instead: (Lightly used. $65.) I'm so proud. Having a little lesson/jam session with him after work today. Any other musicians on this board ever jam with their parent or child? It's a kin to playing catch, for the athletically challenged.

I would love to hear it. I cannot promise a truly detailed review, but I will write something here (or elsewhere, if you prefer). I know what it's like to want to be heard and I like your influences. Good luck with the album, and lay it on me.

I had to indentify what year a song was released. Turned out to be a relatively easy one for me: The Modern Lovers - "Roadrunner" [JoJo]Why, it was 1976, of course![/JoJo]

The Gerbils - Are You Sleepy? David Bowie - Scary Monsters The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday Guided By Voices - Isolation Drills Man, this Gerbils CD is the epitome of "College Rock" from the 90's. And I mean that neither as a good or bad thing, just as a point of fact.

Today I won passes to: Cirque Shanghai and The Art Institute of Chicago (including the new Modern Wing) I'll take one of my kids to one, and the other one to the other. Fun stuff for the summer!

I am so, so happy to hear such a rave review. The Pups were my "gateway" band -- into the world of Underground/Indie/Alternative/whatever rock back in the mid/late-80's. And yeah, Kurt is a magical player for me, too. Thanks so much for the review. I haven't seen them since '89, but hopefully I'll get the chance to catch them again. And yeah, my fingers are crossed for Chris, too.

While I do like to sing along on occasion, I would NEVER do it at an acoustic show. That's just rude.
-
and I'll probably give this a spin sometime today, too: R.I.P., Jay.

I sometimes sing along, until I realize what I'm doing and stop myself. Because, honestly, I am there to hear the band. Still, it's fun and it's all a part of the fun to have fun with the fun stuff that you do. I like fun. It's fun.

Eh. I bought it when it first came out and was completely underwhelmed. Maybe I need to give it another spin?
