Thanks to the book I got the other day, I am checking this show out:
That show looks pretty sick, opening up with Eyes might have been a clue. Is it worth a snatch )spending a snowy day snatching Floyd and Dead shows) and if so, have you found a SBD or matrix that may be better than the archive recording you linked to?

is it the same singer? somebody said they use a different singer for the gabriel era shows?
Not really sure. I think so but don't follow it closely enough to really know. Not much of tribute band follower (this is the only tribute band I ever saw) but as you said, these guys are really good. Vocals aside, if you gave someone the pepsi challenge on the real genesis and the musical box, I think they'd have trouble telling them apart, at least I would. Maybe the drums would be the give away but the guys playing hacket, banks and rutherford are spot on.
The whole concept of doing note for note, visual effect for visual effect copies of tours could really backfire unless you are really good and they are. That goes to my original response, I think whoever does Gabriel in the gabriel era tours does a better job of doing gabriel than the Phil guy doing Phil, whether its the same guy or not.
Now I'm waiting for the Duke tour, to me, that was the last great Genesis tour that mixed the old with the new, and I love Duke.
Oh yeah, i think it sucks that gabriel won't preform at the induction, that rehearsal excuse is bullshit. Go pratice carpet crawlers for 2 days and shut the eff up. Or better yet, Back in NYC, now that would be cool.
-
saw The Musical Box last night ... was very skeptical ... "why would i want to see a genesis cover band?"
blown away
great stuff
I was there Friday. You should check out when the do the Selling England tour. The lead singer does a better Gabriel IMO.

I had a really weird moment in Wilco fandom when one of my buddies put on Being There when a few of us were drinking beer and hanging out. I'd always thought of it as this daring, ambitious step forward for them (Misunderstood) sprinkled with new American classics (Far, Far, Away) and then I realized listening front to back how tepid that album is. I think AM and BT are more 'dad rock' then anything else they've done. Total MOR hum along easy going pop/classic rock with a few moments of undeniable brilliance, but to me as a crafted piece of art that I can interact with they are both so much more dull, they have so many less fascinating lyrical, and musical nooks and crannies for me to peer into.
Interesting, BT was a huge album for me and while at various points when other albums have come out, i thought it was surpassed as their best, I keep coming back to it over time. For me, it's still just a great record of great tunes and while I never thought of it as daring, Misunderstood was daring for them in breaking the alt country label, I still think it works as an 80 minute statement on rock 'n roll and rock 'n fandom. BT songs are still the most excited I get when they play them live. They may have albums that are more ambitious or have better lyrics and even some better songs but to me, none with a better overall collection of songs than BT. Anyway, big surprise here:
BT
YHF
Summerteeth
MA 1&2 combined with just the Wilco tunes; it's a cop out, I know, but they are pretty great songs.
Ghost by a hair over
SBS
AM
W(TA)
If it wasn't an even bigger cop out than combining MA 1&2, I'd put the YHF demos with Ken Coomer before Summerteeth. It may be Summerteeth 2 in a lot of ways but that isn't a bad thing.

I'm not sure if this counts as being out and about but got in my car to make a quick run to the store last night and put XM-50 The Loft on and they had just started playing the Lonely 1. I have never heard that song on anything resembling a radio station, satellite or otherwise, and it really took me by surprise.
I have always loved that song and just hearing it on the radio made me really pay attention to it. Being There was such an important album to me at the time it came out and hearing a deep cut from it on the radio made my night.
-
Reading comprehension -1 for me. I even read it twice to be sure!
Anyway. Nice story.
Lol. Thanks
-
That is a cool story, thanks for sharing!
One thing though:
2 is right answer.
Thanks. Jeff actually wasn't at the dinner, it was just the other 4. I guess Jeff snoozed in the dressing room or something.

cool story, dtram. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it.

Kind of a cool story. Was lucky enough to have a friend that I used to work with in Philly radio in the late 90's. He had arranged with reprise to interview Jeff before the show at the TLA in late April/May '99 (Too lazy to check Wilcobase for the exact date but I think it was 4/28/99. Anyhow, we get to the TLA around 5- 5:30 and and get led into the room. House lights are up and there are Wilco sound checking She's Jar, just me, my buddy and the reprise rep. They were stopping and starting it and working through some stuff and it was pretty cool. They may have played another song and then stopped.
We waited a few minutes and got led upstairs to the dressing room where it was me, my buddy and Jeff. I told Jeff how much I loved Summerteeth and how I didn't think I would like that record as much as Being There but I did (I've since changed that opinion) and he seemed real appreciative about that. My buddy proceeded to do the interview, nothing earth shattering, you could tell Jeff was pretty tired. Cool part of the interview is when his wife called him in the middle and we just sat there while he was talking to her. I guess she asked him how he felt and he said something like being in "mid-tour malaise."
Anyway interview ended and we went back downstairs and the reprise rep invites us to dinner. We thought, cool way to kill time before the show. She takes out the back door into the alley beind the TLA and there's Jay sitting on the curb smoking, and John, Ken and Leroy milling around. She invites the 4 of them to dinner too and off the 7 of us go to the chinese restaurant on 2nd street.
I end up sitting directly across from Jay and we spend the most the dinner debating the influnces on Summerteeth. I told him I heard a lot Brian Wilson, he insisted the Beatles and Bee Gees were what were going through his mind and thought BW as a huge influence was being overated (I did and do now strongly disagree.) I told him Candyfloss really reminded me of the Beach Boys Heroes and Villians and that Pieholden Suite was structurally really similar to the Beach Boys Cabinessence. When I said that, John nodded in way that he hadn't thought about that but kind of agreed.
Anyway, other folks from radio showed up too and the General Manager of certain philly Adult Alternative college station shows up and introduces himself to the band and when the rep says, "this is Jay", he says "Farrar?" Honest to God, I am not making that up. My head just dropped in embarassment. I was taken in good humor by the guys though. Dinner ended, we said goodbye and went to see an awesome show.
My one regret is that I wish I had talked to the other guys more, especially after reading the Greg Kot book and now knowing what a power play Jay was making in the band at the time. They were all extremely nice.
Just thought I'd share. Kind of amazing that there's only 1 guy left in the band that was at that dinner.

Dude, tell your girlfriend to like what she likes, love what she loves, and not to give a shit what anyone else thinks.
Amen
-
That's pretty awesome, and $10 is totally reasonable.
Yeah, I'm not really a fan club joiner type of guy but you can't beat it, for the yearly single alone. I was a member for 10 years before they started the ticket thing, now it's an even better deal.
-
How do you prevent scalpers from joining the fan club? And did fans have to pay something to join the club or was it free?
Had to be a member before the tour was announced. R.E.M. fan club is $10 per year but since 1988, they have sent a x-mas single to members. Back in the day when R.E.M. was popular, those early singles were worth a couple hundred bucks if you could find one. They used to be 45's but now they are CD singles. I have no idea what they are worth now. I think the highest run they ever had was 6,500 for one year in the mid nineties but I'm not really sure. Kind of make the $10 worth it.
There was a password issued by the fan club for the pre-sales so I suppose those inclined could probably get one and buy tix but overall, the best seats did go to the fans. I got 13th row at MSG for the same tour and have gotten good to great seats for every one of their tours since '99.
-
I just did a search on Stub Hub and found that at quick glance, 44 of the 132 seats available in the PIT of the Fox Theater are being scalped for outrageous resale values. I think that it is disgusting that approx 1/3 of the best seats are in the worst hands. I tried all three options for ticket sales and did not see pit tickets pop up once. That goes for about 10 friends trying as well. Its a shame that the best fans are not going to be in the best section. Maybe Wilco can try and grab up these tickets in the future and sell them during presales or something? I guess there is really no solution.
Anyways, just thought I would share this morning.
JJ
I think the band can control that. For R.E.M.'s last tour, I got 4 tickets in the fan club pre-sale in the Pit at the Mann in Phila. Seemed to me like it was mostly fan club members in the Pit for that show.
If 1/3 of the tix for that Fox show are on Stub Hub, it's pretty obvious the promoter is either funneling the tix to brokers or maybe even putting them up there themselves behind a shell organization. I would think if Wilco wanted to stop that they could but who knows what kind of deals they cut with promoters. Maybe bands get more money if they give up control of ticket allotments.
-
How much does Stub Hub get when someone sells a ticket?
Seller pays 15 points, buyer pays 10, they make 25% on each sale. It's on top of the sale price so if the ticket is $100, the buyer pays $110 and the seller receives $85. Genius if you ask me.
-
My two cents on StubHub: they are not awesome. The fact that you can see "any show" if you have enough money is not awesome. What's awesome is when real fans have a fair shot at getting seats, instead of a system that favors corporate scalpers.
There will always be an after market. If given the choice between buying a ticket from a scalper in front of the venue that may be fake(happened to me for Bruce in '99 lost $450) or making a purchase that's guaranteed, I'll take the latter.
Real fans do have a shot at getting seats. I got 2 for Montclair in the pre-sale and to for Philly this AM at face plus the silly fees. What if I was away this week and missed the sales? At least with Stubhub, i can go if I really want to.
Like I said before, with these venues, there are more real fans than there are tickets, people are going to get shut out.
-
How is buying from StubHub any better (morally) than buying from any other scalpers? I mean, there used to be posts all over VC decrying the scalpers for being slimeball assholes. I'm not trying to attack anybody, just wondering if people honestly see it as something different and why. I've never used them, but I'm not saying I'd be above it in a time of crisis if there were no alternative.
I don't think it's a moral thing at all, it's supply and demand. I've never had a problem paying a scalper or a ticket broker a premium for either a great seat to a show I want to go to or for a seat to a show I got shut out of. To me, that would be like saying it's immoral to sell your house for more than you paid or to sell a stock for more than you paid.
I do agree that the shady business of promoters funneling the best seats to brokers is a joke but it seams that most bands with pre-sales or fan club sales(R.E.M., Wilco, Pearl Jam etc.) or acts like Bruce who have GA in front of the stage that you have to wait in line to get wrist bands for have taken care of that to an extent.
As for Wilco, it's a catch 22. They, to me at least, are cleary playing venues they have outgrown and are charging less than need to to boot. This is great for us fans because we can see them in great venues meant for music and don't have to pay an arm and leg to get in. Downside is that the shows sell out in 5 seconds and maybe some folks have to go to the after market to get in.
-
last time they played at the tower (2 years ago)it wasnt like that. the venue can charge more for those primo seats than for standing room.
Right, that show was great too.
It seems like Wilco is going out of their way, at least locally to play GA shows. Looks like Montclair could have seats down front but they are pulling them out for the shows and they are playing the factory instead of the Tower when I think the Tower has a larger capacity.
-
i hope so. i've never bought tickets from anywhere other than ticketmaster or the wilco pre-sales
It is. If prices are too high, you can always wait the people out to see if they come down. Also, e-tickets are the best option since they get e-mailed to you in PDF form and you don't have to wait for them to be shipped.
-
i just got 2 for the electric factory too. as much as i love the tower, i prefer seeing wilco with GA standing.
I hear you, just can't stand the factory, the Tower is an ideal venue for them. They used to take the seats out of the front orch for some shows for GA in the front and reserved in the back and the balcony, I wonder if they so that anymore.
-
As for StubHub, I've never bought tickets from them but aren't they pretty reputable? Is there any way you could call or email them to see if your order was processed?
Stubhub is awesome. You may have to pay over face but at least you can get into any show if you really want to go and since they guarantee the order, you never have to worry about getting ripped off by fakes in front of the venue.
-
Scored 2 for Philly at 10am. Completed the order and checked at 10:02 and they were all gone. They need to start playing bigger venues. Perosnally wish they were at the Tower this time around.
-
To me, even before I saw this thread, when listening to the live ending of You Are My Face I would think, man a nice slide into Terrapin Station right here would go nicely.

Holy crap how can you hate radio cure?
magazine is a decent song but not fantastic it doesnt have any of the depth radio cure has.
whoever made the comment about the headphones and really getting immersed in the song understands
What can I say? Magazine, imo, is a piece of pure pop confection and I love it. Radio Cure, to me, is a dirge. I understand how making these switches changes the mood of YHF, that's why I like it. The pop of magazine and cars to me balance the record better and make it a better record. I understand what Jeff was trying to accomplish with the released sequence, I just like my alternative better.
