  1. I always used to argue with my brother about this. I followed the Water's solo path whereas he remained with the Floyd post-waters line-up.

'Amused to Death' is significantly better than both 'Momentary Lapse' and 'Division Bell'. It just shows the strength of the 'Floyd' moniker. Imagine if 'Amused to Death' had been released as a 'Pink Floyd' record and 'Momentary Lapse' was a Gilmour solo record (which it was in everything but name). The respective sales would have been very different and 'Amused' would be viewed as a classic.

Still not really interesting in Roger dragging 'The Wall' out again. I wish these guys would leave things alone. Either come up with new output or retire from view. There is too much good new music around to get excited obout old boys peddling 30 year old material.

Amused came 5 years after MLOR. I think the proper comparison is KAOS and MLOR as they came out within weeks of each other and the tours were on the road at the same time. Roger fucked KAOS up with that 80's sounding production (he admitted as much) and the concept was too goofy to really be taken seriously. The tour however was another thing entirely, goofy concept or not, the show really worked as a thematic piece integrating the Floyd stuff with the KAOS album and I would still put it in the top 10 of shows I ever saw.

It's easy to see how the public sided with Gilmour, he had the name, he created radio friendly music that sounded like Floyd (Roger really wasn't trying to at that point) and he gave the public what they wanted. That '87-'88 tour was a spectacle, I saw it 3 times and enjoyed it. JFK '87 when they opened with Echoes and closed with Shine On I still remember vividly.

By the time of Amused in '92, Roger didn't seem to be really taken seriously by the press or radio even though now he was trying to sound like Pink Floyd, it was too late. What God Wants came and went as a single and that was that, no one bought the record. I think it's debateable whether it would be viewed as a classic if it was called Pink Floyd, maybe. If it was Gilmour playing the guitar instead of Jeff Beck.....

I still think the record is overlong and too wordy but I like the concept much more. Bravery of Being Out of Range rocks. Again though, 2 years later with Division Bell, Gilmour gave the public what they wanted and with Wright back in the fold writing and playing (as opposed to MLOR where his involvement seems to be limited to being included in the credits), the record actually sounds like a PF record and I actually kind of like it. Sure, conceptually it's week but musically I think it's pretty good.

Man I went on here, sorry. Anyway, I hear you about 60+ years olds trotting out 30 year old records but something like the Wall, to me at least, is theatre and it doesn't really matter who is putting it on or how old it is. And having been 11 the first time they toured it and not buying a plane ticket to Berlin in '90, I'm glad for the chance of seeing it live. I started getting really excited at the prospect of being in something like the 10th row

during the side 4 facist block of In the Flesh/Run Like Hell/Waiting for the worms and the seeing the Trial and having the Wall come down. The Dark Side tour 3 years ago was great and Roger's a stickler when it comes to production, I think it's going to be great.

  2. Amused To Death is my favourite! Loved the 99/00 tours when he was playing a few from that album, Pros & Cons tour still the gold standard for me though. It is too bad about his vocals not being up to the more strenuous stuff, as far back as the 99 tour he was lip-synching the "from where I stand..." part in Every Stranger's Eyes, and on the DSOTM tour using pre-recorded "guide vocals" on Have A Cigar and others that were pretty much all you heard in the house while he mumbled along to make it look good on the video screens. Not sure who he thought he was fooling, if anyone. Given that a huge percentage of the vocals on The Wall are by him, should expect even more of that. Hope I don't sound too down on him, I love Roger and will go see him anywhere, anytime. Just jonesing for some new stuff is all, it's been 18 years since Amused To Death!

Don't get me wrong, I like Amused to Death but I think it's a little wordy and a little overlong. Radio KAOS tour was one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. Too bad it got overshadowed by the ersatz Pink Floyd tour in '87.

  3. I will go and am sure it will be great, but damn I wish he'd just release some new material instead of touring another old Floyd album.

I think he kinda lost his creative spark. Amused to Death had good parts to but wasn't great. He also really can't sing anymore either which is a little more tolerable in a live environment with pyro and visual stimulation than on a studio record. I, for one, am really looking forward to this. It should definitely be a spectacle.

  4. Came up from Philly with a friend who's kind of a Wilco Newbie but really digs them. Played night 2 of the residency on the way up and when Dreamer came on, I said I'd bust a nut if the played that tonight. DID NOT expect that. All the Being There songs in these sets are a huge treat as was the 6 songs from Summerteeth last night. After Always in Love>Candyfloss, Jeff said something like, "hope you enjoyed that Summerteeth Rock Block." These guys just to continue to deliver on a level I'm not sure any band can duplicate right now.

One small complaint/suggestion; Deeper Down needs to go. Total momentum killer.

  5. Very cool venue. Decided at 4 yesterday afternoon to make the drive from Philly after I saw TM posted some more tickets. Absolutely exhausted, not sure I have the energy for 2 more shows, these guys are incredible going for 3 hours like they do. Highlights for me were the ooh/aahs of Summerteeth into the drum opening of Misunderstood, the new arrangement of Spiders, Not for The Season, and Nels fucking up You Never Know and the big kick Jeff and John got out of it. That second Big Star cover with John and Pat taking lead vox was awesome as well.

  6. I might agree with you on this: taken as a whole 9/10/91 might be superior to 3/29/90. It's really stellar. But that pre-drums in set 2 on 3/29 is just so crazy-good-weird!

Regarding the 3/29 Eyes - when my wife and I got hitched I INSISTED to the DJ that he play that tune while all of our folks were there at the reception. We got some odd comments - "How long does THIS go on?" etc. :lol

Later on, when it was mostly just our friends we cranked up 8/6/74 (we were married on 8/6/94).

Yeah, the pre-drums is great there, i love the crowd reaction when they go into Dark Star. Dark Star was obviously a perfect song to do with Branford in the fold. I have never been much of fan of drums/space, for me it's never been interesting enough to warrant 20 minutes of every show dedicated to it, but that 3/29 space with Branford is pretty spooky.

    Love your wedding story.

I have a major problem here; I have tickets to Wilco for the next 2 saturdays on what may be one of their coolest tours ever and I can't stop listening to the dead. I think I just have to force myself to get into a wilco frame of mind here.

  7.

If you want an adventure the DLV lounge is East on Bloomfield Ave minutes from the theatre.

A "may we dance with your dates" type advenure? What are we talking here.

Only bar to drink outside is the back deck at Egans on Walnut St. - 10 minute walk or so from the theatre

    This sounds like the spot.

  8. Cuban Petes on Bloomfield make great Margueittas, but you have to bring your own wine. There are some outdoors spots on Church Street, about a block up from the Wellmont. Parking on Church street, too.

Thanks, I see that on the map.

  9. yep.....Bloomfield Ave is the main street that rund through Montclair and there are a bunch of pubs/bars and great resteraunts...if you search online for places in montlclair, they're all pretty much going to be by the venue, as it's in the main part of town, and it's not a big town to begin with.

Cool, thanks. Am looking at a satellite view of the area and there are restaurants noted but it's hard to tell what good and what's not.

  10. I grew up in the montclair area and there are a few good bars in near the venue. The Office is a good place with a good beer selection.

Thanks. These places easy to find I assume? Just park and they're up an down the street?

  11. Coming up from Philly and wondering if there's any good place to get a beer pre-show near the venue? I think it's supposed to be 80 on Saturday so I nice outdoor place would be great. Anyone?

  12. Yeah, that MSG show is fantastic the whole way through. Really like the Deal, Estimated w/ Branford and correct, the SOTM is top-notch.

I think I know what my drive home music will be today.

Forgot to mention in the 1st post; I don't really have a favorite dead tune but that 3/29/90 Eyes may be my favorite thing of theirs.

  13. The Birdsong from 1st set is real sweet, too. Except work by Marsalis, here. He and the GD melded very well. The NYE show from this same year features some excellent work by him, as well. He sits in for a few on the first set and the whole second set, as well (NFA->Eyes->DS....and a killer Wharf Rat post-drums, to name a few highlights). I have a tape of the show that has his opening set, too, that is really, really nice.

Huge fan of 3/29/90. Been on GD/Branford kick in the last week listening to 3/29/90, 12/31/90 and 9/10/91 at MSG and I have to say that I think 9/10/91 is the best of them all. First, it has Branford for the whole show for the first time and a Standing on the Moon that just blows me away, Branford adds so much to that song. There's a real nice GEMS Amdig matrix on etree ID 98132.

  14. I don't know what to expect. I haven't been there in a long time but I don't remember it having a real big scalping scene. If you remember the tower show in Feb of '08, that show had ridiculous prices, north of $175 leading up to the show but I heard stories of people getting tix for face out in front. I wouldn't expect to get face for this show but who knows. Personally, I'd wait until a week before the show and the lock up at the best price I could get.
