Well, Paul from NM, I'd have to disagree with you being a "shitty writer". I see Wilco tomorrow night in San Diego, and your write-up has me all amped up for the show! From all accounts lately, they continue to be America's greatest live band!:banana:rock:guitar

Ahh, thanks.  It was such a mind blowing show for me, one being so close to the band, and two, just the whole scene was perfect, I'm still riding the post-show buzz.  I meant to throw in that the night before at the opera John Hiatt and Buddy Guy played a dual headliner show, and several of my friends asked me if I was going to attend, and I told them I was seeing Wilco the next night, and besides I wasn't quite ready for a night of grandad rock, I'm still enjoying on the dad rock scene.  Just trying to be clever, I don't think it was appreciated.

  2. I'm the last person that should be writing this because I'm a shitty writer and I didn't keep a setlist during the show, so I'll just regurgitate the list as I recall it and hope others will fill in the blanks. If you've never been there, the Santa Fe Opera is a beautiful open-air venue that is more accustomed to black ties and Rossini than rock shows, but with the 12,000' Sangre de Cristo Mountains forming the eastern sklyine and with Jemez wilderness and badlands to the west the views are spectacular especially with the late summer sunset and all of the wildflowers in bloom what a night for a Wilco show! To the music, I don't know if it's because I haven't seen the band since SS19, or because a buddy got us front-row center seats (unflippin' believable!), but damn the boys got out there and rocked the freakin' house down!  I have to say after seeing the band around 30 times, this show was far away one of the most mind-blowing I can recall. From the moment they opened with Hankshake Drugs to the last beat of I've Got You (at the end of the century) the whole crowd was their feet for the entirety of the show, now I've seen Wilco here 2 or maybe 3 other times and that's never happened, Santa Fe crowds can be a little stodgy. I've never seen Wilco play extended jams in so many songs, they almost seemed like a different band. And Pat! Holy shit! that guy was having the time of his life out there, the energy was overflowing.  There was banter here and there over the course of the night but I'll be damned if I can remember it, I was on such heavy music high that nothing else mattered.  I just wish Paul from Chicago (I'm Paul from NM) was there to provide his beloved commentary, it would certainly help me remember the night better.  For the encore they brought out Terry Allen, who is local, that was a really special edition to the show.  It was funny, during the second song he played and sang (don't know the songs title) he got into an extended keyboard jam and was really rocking, and I saw Jeff nodding to Pat to cut in with his guitar solo, Pay obliged but not for another couple of minute while Terry jammed out, great fun.

It was a very similar set list to Red Rocks the night before, without the following songs: At least that's what You Said, Heavy Metal Drummer, I'm the Man Who loves You, no U.S. Blues either.  They did play I'm Always in Love.  I hope some else can fill out the songs.  Thanks.

  3. I am the beleaguered moderator in the Facebook group and to tell you the truth I am just about over it. The group has gotten way too big, I think it’s been invaded by trolls and there’s so much shitposting and backstabbing that it’s not fun anymore. I know that some of you here on this message board are also members of the Facebook group and I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions you might have as to some way to get that place back on track. I’ve always thought that this board and the Facebook group could compatibly coexist because they each have different strengths. (I also know that some people just hate Facebook on general principles and I’m beginning to understand that point of view!) My real name is Diane Kyrus and you can send me a PM.

Oh, and in the interest of keeping this post on topic, I am a huge fan of OTJ.

    Hi Dianne,

Thanks for doing an impossible job, you're an unlikely hero, sorry couldn't resist.  Anyway, I'm in the Shot In the Arm group but I "unfollowed" it in the month or so before the last Solid Sound, just way too many people posting, and while I love Wilco I don't care about every fans revelations regarding the band and their music.  Maybe just turn off the ability of people to post to the group for a while, people will fade away and forget about it, and in a few months quietly turn the posting permissions back on.  If it were me I'd be tempted to nuke the whole thing.  Thanks.

  4. Ode to Joy?  Wilco should have just named it Sky Blue Sky II.  When I first got on VC in 2008 SBS was still taking a beating from many hardcore VC'ers, I didn't get the criticism then, and I don't get it now.  Wilco is band that been around the block, lyrically, sonically and personellwise,  and they can make any album they want to, hell they own the damn label.  I guess folks expected light-hearted poppy tunes with lots of hooks and clever lyrics given the title "Ode to Joy", but no, the band goes and throws out a curve ball maybe hoping the fans can rise to the occasion and appreciate the fact that they're not sitting back on their laurels rehashing the familiar.  I trust Tweedy and the boys to know what they're doing, and Ode grows on me with every new listen.  If you're not into it, that's cool, just think of it was as an experimental album of deep cuts.

  5. I ordered pink vinyl several months ago... don't recall exactly when... I did get my shipment notification on Oct. 1, but it says delivery isn't scheduled until Oct. 9, which sucks.  Hopefully it will be sooner than that... it seems like I've been getting the vinyl pre-orders from Wilco on release day for the past few years... at least I'll be able to get the downloads tomorrow.

Same here, but there it was when I opened the mailbox, there is hope.

  6. Thanks for the review WYWU, it was a fun show, even funner since we had third row center seats, that never happens!  The band was very animated, Jeff was all smiles and John was jumping around like crazy!  The crowd seemed really into it, way more than in 2012 the last time they played the opera, when the crowd sat nearly the entire time.  My only disappointment was they didn't play my request, ELT, that my wife and I requested everyday since we bought the tickets, oh well, maybe some day they'll play it again.  On to El Paso!

  7. I'm sure a collective memory for many here, standing in the pouring rain while the band played Radio Cure and the power went down for a second and the audience totally carried the moment, "Oh distance has no way of making love understandable".  It was a moment of pure glory.

  9. I think I recall Tweedy saying in some interview a year or so after WTA was released that he wished he had paid more attention to the song order because he believed that would totally changed the way the album was received.  He obviously took that to heart with the Whole Love.

  10. Lots of whining going on here, I did my share of whining too but it had nothing to do with what was going on inside the festival.  First, our hotel lost our reservation which created an immediate stressful situation, they did rectify the issue and got us into another, more expensive hotel, which they paid the difference on, but it only had a single king bed, so my daughter had to sleep on the sofa hide-a-bed, which sucked for her and ultimately us.  Next, when we went to enter the SS grounds the ticket taker told us that our tickets had already been scanned in an hour before.  We had to talk to the Frontgate representative who basically accused me of trying to scam them, but after me assuring them that I was an honest person over and over she gave us bands.  I called Frontgate yesterday and told their management about the situation.

As far as the festival, it didn't seem anymore crowded than 2013, except for Sunday where a lot more people stuck around than they had in the previous 3 SS we've been to.  Friday night people were actually leaving giving us plenty of room in front of the sound board where we park.  No issues with drunks, pot smokers, or fest farters.  If you're having a problem with the crowd up front, then move back and your experience will improve.  I'm there for the music, I'll worry about being up front for reserved seat shows.  The scheduling was too tight in my opinion, too many things going on simultaneously.  As far as music, Ryley Walker, William Tyler, and NRBQ were my favorites, there was no single standout like Lucius in 2013 as far as I was concerned, but I missed a lot.  I thought Mac Demarco was obnoxious.  We didn't bother with festival food, we stocked our cooler and brought our own food in.  Drinks, the beer was excellent and the Bloody Mary's were outstanding.  Other than the schedule pamphlet and wrist band there was no other official festival schwag, every other year there has been plenty of ephemera to collect, from fans to pencils, must be a cost cutting measure.  Overall it was a fun weekend, the Wilco and Tweedy sets made up for any problems we had with tickets etc., we'll probably be back.
