  1. No, they are obviously not 21st Century releases. I was just making a general comparison within his own catalogue. The point I was making is 1) they are pretty poor albums for Neil Young and 2) there are a hell of alot of better albums that have been released over the past ten years than Prairie Wind, Living with War and Chrome Dreams II. Whilst I have no great love for Greendale I can see why alot of people like it. However, personally its nowhere near as good as Sleeps with Angels. As an aside (your obviously a fan, judging by the name) where do you stand with Silver and Gold. Thats a reco
  2. We are a bit weird about our own I must admit. I would have maybe had the Gorilaz Demon Days much higher. That Beth Gibbons album was also one of the highlights of the decade for me. Nice to see it recognised. As a brit though I would admit that there is not much going on in this country music wise any more. For me the best period in recent history was the ninetie, with bands like Massive Attack, Tricky, Postishead, Goldie and Ronnie Size etc. That was the last time the UK had a genuinely exciting and inovative music scene. Its all been down hill since then....
  3. Thats some list. I would add one more. The best album of the year (or my favourite) is Jason Lytle's 'Your Truly, The Comuter'. If you haven't heard it yet I would definately recommend it. The Felice Brother record was also very good as was the Black Crowes latest.
  4. Over on Thrashers Wheat today they are showing a clip of the clasic 'Rockin' In the Free World' from Saturday Night Live. It was 20 years ago. Makes me feel old, I was just getting into Neil at the time. It's a legendary performance from Neil. Totally ripped it up on stage.
  5. Greendale is certainly the best, and most consistant, of the four. But its still not that great. Not when you compare it to: On The Beach Time Fades Away Ragged Glory Sleeps With Angels Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere Tonights The Night After The Gold Rush.
  6. Not yet. But I have every intention to doing so. I have picked up some good recommendations off this forum so I'll definately give it ago. Looking on Amazon.co.uk the albums not listed so I'll check out myspace first and go from there.
  7. No, its the closing track. I can't remember what the opening tune was. Not a name I recognised anyway.
  8. The Wilco track is 'Spiders', album version. The CD is pretty good actually. A bit of Lambchop, Bright Eyes, Hold Steady, Richmond fontaine, Ryan Adams etc...all the usual Uncut favourites.
  9. This is kind of sad but......apparently Chas and Dave have also split up. This may not mean anything to anyone outside of London but they were a cockney duo famous in the eighties. Pretty sure they never cracked the US though!! They're getting on a bit now and Dave's wife recently passed away, which led to the duo dispanding. As a Spurs (Football not Basketball) fan this saddens me as they used to record songs for us whenever we got to the FA Cup final!!
  10. That looks a bit more acurate!! My memories not what it used to be! Even I wouldn't have had AGIB that high. For what its worth, if anyones interested, I would have Lambchop's Nixon at the top of the pile. Man I love that record.
  11. On the back of your recommendation I picked up the Miles Benjamin anthony Robinson record. I love it. Its a very intense listen and takes a while for it took sink in but its great. Reminds me of Micah P. Hinson but a bit more up-tempo and rockin'.
  12. I saw you mentioned this record on another topic I started. Is it worth searching out?
  13. It has been getting a lot of positive press in the UK. A much loved band here but I don't think that most people know that they are still putting new stuff out. A 'Cockney' concept album...who'd have thought it.
  14. Off the top of my head both 'Dig' and 'Abbatior' made the list. 'Dig Lazarus Dig' is a great record but abbatoir/Lyre could have done with a bit of quality control. As with most double albums, it would have made a great single disk. I don't think any Decemberists record made the cut although I would have had 'The Crane Wife' in there personally. 'Real gone' by Mr. Waits was on there (Albeit very low) which does restore my faith a bit. That is a serously good record and one that never seems to get much love.
  15. I'm coming back to eat humble pie. I have finally sucumbed and, in a moment of financial madness, picked up the DVD version of the Archives. I love it. I feel that I've been ripped off but..... I still love. I slated this project a couple of months ago for being sloppy and ill-conceived (which it is to a degree) but having sat with the dvds for a week or so the music wins through. There is not many revelations on the set but I'm loving the versions of 'Journey Through The Past' and 'Dance, Dance, Dance'. There is also a lovely live version of 'See the sky about to rain'. I also got a voucher w
  16. I love some 'Prog' but it can be really unsociable. I love going into pubs and sticking 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' on the Jukebox. A bit of Floyd can really change the atmosphere in a busy pub on a friday night. My neighbours have bad taste in music but I'm sure they don't appreciate 'Home By The Sea' pounding through their walls for fifteen minutes or being woken up by 'Back in NYC' and 'The Knife'!!
  17. I'm loving the opening and closing Jim James tracks. The next MMJ album should be very interesting!
  18. Good afternoon guys. I don't know if anyone out there reads Uncut or are interested in 'lists' but the UK magazine has recently published their top 150 albums of the 21st Century. Number one was 'The White Stripes' with 'Elephant'. They actually had about seven albums in the list! Wilco came in forth with 'Ghost is Born' whilst 'YHF' only featured at number 34 (Criminal!!). 'Sky blue Sky' also featured lower down the list. It was a mildly interesting read but one thing that is really starting to annoy me about Uncut is their totally obsession with Dylan and Young. I love both these artists and
  19. It's nothing spectacular to be honest. Its just the sound of four friends enjoying playing some tunes together. You can really tell who wrote what and I think the songs were brought to the sessions by the individuals involved. 'Dear God'and 'His Master's Voice" are really great, as are the M.Ward songs. I used to like Conor Oberst but I think his last two or three records have been kind of average. At this point I'm really more interested to see what My Morning Jacket come up with next. With regards to M.Ward I think it would be impossible for me to dislike anything he does but I don't feel he
  20. I kind of lost touch with the Black Crowes way back. 'Southern Harmony' is a masterpiece but subsequent records seem to decrease in quality. However, I gambled on the new record and was blown away. It was much better than I was expecting. The first five tracks are all top notch. 'I ain't' hiding does sound like a mix between a funky 'Stones' and some thing of MMJ's Evil Urges. I love the country tinges to the record. Is the download disk any good? I got a voucher with the cd but am having trouble accessing the content.
  21. Not sure if this has been mentioned in another thread but Genesis are finally up for nomination the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. They are up against the likes of KISS, Chili Peppers, the Hollies, the Stooges and LL Cool J (?). I'd be very surprised if they get in but it might help to bring the guys together in the public arena.
  22. A new Tom Waits live record is great news. Last one was 'Big Time' so we were due one. Those shows were pretty special so it will be nice to have a copy.
  23. That song 'Far around the bend' is amazing. Its on the 'Dark Was The Night' compilation that came out earlier in the year. Hasn't that song got the line....'Waiting for Pavement to get back together'!!
  24. The 'And Then there Were Three' two-disk set has a really good documentary on it. I've always loved that album, the first Genesis record I owned. Tracks like 'Undertow' and 'Burning Rope' hold special memories for me. It does sound markedly better remastered.
