  1. With our love of lists and rankings, this should stir up some debate. Wilco in at 72!! http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/?ie=UTF8&docId=1000431011
  2. For lovers of the 'Chop. There is a new live album due shortly available from the Merge website. Looks quite a varied track-listing so could be interesting. http://www.mergerecords.com/store/store_detail.php?catalog_id=666
  3. Is Peter Greens output since he returned to the music scene worth checking out? He had a lovely guitar sound, and his vocals on 'Man Of The World' floor me.
  4. Yeah, they do a mean version of 'Rattleshake Snake', which I think is on the 'Pandora's Box' collection. I remember reading a while back about Joe Perry and his respect for Peter Green. not wanting to go off the subject, but some of the old Fleetwood Mac stuff is great. Another band that started nicely and then kind of turned into a joke. 'Green Manalishi', 'Oh Well' 'Black Magic Woman' 'Love That Burns'. Its all good. I Wonder what would of happened if Peter Green didn't lose it (Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan also lost the plot big time if I recall).
  5. Season of Wither never did it for me. The other four are top draw. My list would be: Sweet Emotion Draw The Line Chip Away At The Stone Toys In The Attic Dream On Damn, I gonna have to go and dig me out some of that stuff and give it a spin tonight.
  6. It was 'Permanent Vacation' that got me into the band in the 80s. Big cheesy rock anthems like 'Dude', 'Angel' and 'Rag Doll'. They was also the first band I ever saw live when I was about 15 years old. Opened with 'Rats in the Celler' and blew my little mind. They are a very easy target for critisism but there does seem to be a common thread running through this thread (?), namely everyone loved them when they were young and kind of outgrew them. I still bung on some Aerosmith (old and new) and it works for me in a nostalgic kind of way. That said 'Live Bootleg' is a great live album which st
  7. Sounds promising. I like 'Harvest Moon' but it could have done with a bit less production. This record is coming out as Audio only, unlike the previous ASP which had DVD versions included. We should be getting 'Toast' next spring and another APS disk this time next year. Rumours are that Archives Volume 2 will appear summer 2011.
  8. Genesis: 1970-1975 Box set. This is very sweet. SACD/DVD versions of five classic albums, hours of interviews and bonus live material. Nicely packaged as well. Tom Waits: Orphans. Lots of good unreleased stuff in a variety of different styles. Looking forward to the Vinyl release any day now. Neil Young: Archives Volume 1. It has its faults and is much debated but I love it. The total experience of siting with the DVD/Blue Ray editions is amazing. I would recommend the CD edition as there is not enough unreleased material to juatify the outlay. I am really looking forward to Volume two whi
  9. Without wanting to re-energise a debate I started a month or so ago............I still don't like the Beatles!!
  10. Tom Waits: Mule Variations (Good for stomping around the Island hunting wild boar with my face painted, conch-shell and spear in hand) Herbie Hancock: Maiden Voyage (Something for a nice sunny day relaxing, blissfully unaware of the lack of food and water on this desolate Island) M. Ward: Transistor Radio. (As the sun sets and I am kicking back with my rancid coconut milk smoothie!!) Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (For when I start to hallucinate due to lack of nutrition - see 'Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging') Jason Lyttle: Yours Truly, The Commuter (Something from 2009 and nice a
  11. To tie in with another thread that is kicking around this page...I really like 'Permanent Vacation' by Aerosmith. Similarly I am very fond of the first Phil Collins solo album (Face Value), which is something that gets you shot in the U.K!!!. 'Abacab' by Genesis is another one I like which seems to go against popular opinion. Songs lie 'No Reply At All' and 'Man On The Corner' are great. People had a problem with that record because it wasn't what you would expect of a Genesis record. In that respect it was quite refreshing. In terms of Dylan I have pretty normal taste, although one of my fa
  12. http://pitchfork.com/news/36940-peter-gabriel-to-cover-radiohead-arcade-fire-bon-iver-magnetic-fields/ This looks like quite an interesting project from Mr. Gabriel. Looks like he's keeping himself busy to ward off the prospect of that proper Genesis re-union tour!!
  13. Despite rumors of leaving the band, Tyler joined The Joe Perry Project onstage November 10th 2009 at the Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza and proceeded to perform the Aerosmith classic "Walk This Way". According to sources at the event, Tyler assured the crowd that despite rumors to to contrary, he is not quitting Aerosmith.
  14. 1) Yankee hotel Foxtrot 2) A Ghost Is Born 3) Summerteeth 4) Being There 5) Sky Blue Sky 6) Wilco (The Album) 7) AM If you plot the results on a graph it shows improvement to a peak with YHF and then a gradual decline down to Wilco (The Album). I am fully confident, however, that the next album will be something special and will halt this decline!!
  15. I still think those 80's Genesis albums are great. I respect them for going in a different direction instead of repeating themselves as other bands do. Whilst I prefer their 70's output albums like Duke and Invisible touch are really strong 'pop' records, with proggy elements. Being in my mid-thirties it was 'Invisible Touch' that first got me into Genesis and I then worked back to the really good stuff!! In terms of the critics (here in the U.K) Genesis were slated and ridiculed in the 80's and accused of 'selling out'. However, they were never really popular with the critics after Gabriel
  16. Looks like Robbie, Levon and Garth have reconciled and will be playing a show as 'The Band' soon. Not sure what I think about this but here's the link. http://www2.ljworld.com/weblogs/multidisciplinary/2009/oct/24/breaking-levon-helm-robbie-robertson-end-feud-will/
  17. The Eels do a great version of 'Jesus Gonna Be Here'. It was on one of their recent live records. I was checking out the new Waits website and Tom must be the most photogenic rock star ever. There are some seriously cool pictures in the photo section.
  18. Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but that is actually a pretty good song!!
  19. No love for David Lynch? Mullholland Drive and Inland Empire were both great pieces of work.
  20. How do Pink Floyd fit into that 'comercialisation' in the 80/90s? I think they were as bad as the rest but did it more subtly and seemed to get away with it in ways that Genesis didn't managed. In terms of later output by 70s prog legends I would stand up for 'Talk' by Yes as a great prog record of the nineties. I would also shout out (as I frequently do!!) for Marillion who are still releasing great albums.
  21. Banks Was a God. Watching the 'Rome' DVD it is amazing how disinterested Banks seems by the whole proceedings. I have a theory that the whole shift in Genesis was more down to Banks than Collins. Phil always had an interest in the soul/pop side of things. For whatever reason Banks seemed to lie down and let Phil take the reigns. Watching the interviews on the box sets it is apparent that Banks is one stubborn monkey so why this shift occurs we'll never know.
  22. Thanks for the correction. Not sure where I got 'Pushing On! from'. The brains a funny thing sometimes!!
  23. No not proceed to those first as the transistion between 'I Can't Dance' and 'The Knife' is too big a step and may be dangerous. Please proceed to the following first before venturing further onto 'Hardwood Floor's' recommendations. Los Endos; One For The Vine; Unquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers...In That Quiet Earth; Burning Rope; Dukes Travel's/Dukes End; Blood On the Rooftops; Home By The Sea; Domino; Those should ease the transistion but I would like to re-iterate what my Genesis-based collegue has said: "Please stop listening to I Can't Dance"
  24. I'm very surprised to be saying this but I would class Before The Flood/Untill The Freeze as my favorite album this year. Its a very strong record so I'm really looking forward to the live DVD. I lost touch with the Crowes after Amorica. Is Warpaint in a similar vein to the recent album. I do love the more 'country' vibe.
  25. Dreaming Man (APS12) has been pushed back to the 7th December (8th for you lot accross the water!). No reason given for the delay other than its Neil Young.
