  1. It's unusual. The home plate umpire already knew obstruction was in play. He's also aware the players most likely don't know this. It's probably better he not make an enthusiastic call here. I think the demeanor of his call, then directing their attention to the call at third totally diffused any explosive reactions. I know the Sox argued plenty, but the umpire could have had a dozen guys down his throat had he merely shot his arms out and screamed safe repeatedly. I say he handled it perfectly.

I haven't heard, did the Red Sox protest this game?

  2. Not touching home plate is irrelevant. The umpire's judgement is that the catcher wouldn't have had the opportunity to block the runner had the runner not been slowed by the obstruction. Had Craig jogged because he was counting on the obstruction as an automatic run, then the umpire could have ruled him out. It's not a given. The players must still play it out. Craig stumbled over Middlebrooks, hustled, and was awarded home because the time difference in the stumble cost him access to the plate. The obstruction was a fact of rule, and the awarding of home is the umpire's judgement based as a result of the obstruction. The umpires were right in calling obstruction and in awarding home because of it.

  3. YouAreDeadtoMe

I was wondering when you were going to chime in on Springsteen.

I don't think we can ever take away what an artist has done, even if they don't do what they used to do. Wilco's output isn't what it used to be, but they're still going strong, especially live. Same is true with Springsteen. Even Dylan says he can never again write songs like he did early on. You can debate whether he's any good live anymore or his last few albums, but the acclaim is earned. You really need to go on totality. We may not love an artist's current work, but still dig their live shows; or just maintain respect for someone for what they've accomplished. They've earned the appreciation.

I mean, seriously, The Eagles are a true candidate for over-acclaimed or over-respected by general pop music fans. A lot artists mentioned here have earned acclaim over a long period of time at some point in their careers, usually early on. It's hard for anyone to keep up the output, but no one can take away what they've achieved.

  4. I haven't been too impressed by the Heatmiser albums. I suppose if you're a completist they could be interesting, as an unfolding and growing of an artist, but they didn't do much for me. Mic City Sons is the best of them.

I love Elliott's voice so it is good to hear, even on songs that aren't his best.

Thanks. I've read where Elliott said he wasn't into what Heatmiser was doing. I'll probably only get those albums if I can find them dirt cheap.

  5. A man is lying in bed waiting for his wife to get out of the shower and join him. He's in the mood. After a short while she joins him and gives him a goodnight kiss before turning over for sleep. The man wraps his arm around his wife, making his move. She tells him, "I'm sorry, but I have a gynecologist appointment in the morning and I need to remain pure for my doctor visit, so goodnight, dear." Her husband agrees and lays back down. After a minute he again puts the move on the wife. "Honey, I told you I can't because of the doctor. Ok?" The man responds to his wife, "I understand, but you don't have a dentist appointment, do you?"

  6. BTW and I have said this before, the penalty for not having health insurance is way too low.  It should be at minimum the same as the lowest cost average health plan for your state.

That penalty ought to be higher and also be a premium for actual healthcare insurance.

  7. The White Sox are about to drop $68MM over six years on 26 year old Cuban 1B Jose Dariel Abreu, who at best compares to the right-handed version of Ryan Howard from three years ago. A lot of scouts have doubts about him, but the Sox don't have to sacrifice their 3rd overall pick in the draft to sign a guy they think is a middle of the order bat. I think he'll be more Viciedo than Cespedes.
