  1. My heart goes to the PurpleChick mix of the Beach Boys' "Surf's Up". Possibly the most sublime melody line ever written in pop. But does that recording really count, since it's really a FLAC-only sort of thing?

If not...for me, it always goes back to Gimme Shelter, which I saw was mentioned earlier. A menacing riff, an absolutely remarkable sonic atmosphere, some truly dead-end lyrics, and Merry Clayton singing the hell out of it. I've always felt that it sounds like nothing else in rock and roll.

Yeah! When her voice cracks during the "Rape, Murder" part (and you hear Jagger go "Yeah") it gives me chills.

  2. I absolutely LOVE this album. I just listened to it again while cleaning the house and I can't find a single flaw. Unfortunately, I had bought it just before my computer was obliterated by a tree so now I only have it on my ipod. Stereo/Mono has long been my favorite, but 49:00 is definitely gaining ground...my pick for best album of 2008

It does grow on you. I was pretty surprised the first time I heard the Beatles/Alice Cooper/Partridge Family/Elton John/Steppenwolf...etc...medley at the end but he did do "I think I love you" when I saw him in Denver a few years ago.

  3. 'Crime In The City' man, now there's a song with atmosphere.

I agree, that song sits in well with the rest of the album.

Lyrically that album is great. "No more" captures drug addiction very well:

    Searchin' for quality

Havin' to have the very best

    Now scroungin' for quantity

    Never havin' time

    To do the test

    That's how the story goes

  4. I'm surprised by the lack of love "Freedom" has gotten so far.

Maybe I have a fond spot for it because I saw Neil spotlight the album at Poplar Creek before it came out--playing a whole bunch of new tunes off the album........and I managed to get a pretty good AUD recording of the show too (just Neil for most of the show....I think Poncho and Ralph Molina backed him up on a few tunes). Whatever the case, "Freedom" gets on the player way more than "Ragged Glory".

I have to agree. I got Freedom on cassette when it first came out and sat and listened to it in my car over and over. I found myself going back to that one much more than Ragged Glory which I also love. It's got some real hidden gems like "No More". Only issue I have now is I am burnt out on "Rockin in the free world" because I use to play it in a band (like every other bar band out there).

Greendale I thought was brilliant. Once I saw him do the entire album solo acoustic I was hooked. Amazing songs.

  5. James maybe has more of the cool factor (On apple records, heroin addict, was on the Simpsons - See below) although that's debatable.

I hate that damn Steamroller song as much as I hate any song out there.

On another note, Neil wrote better songs.

    From the Simpsons:

Controller: Er, some good news, gentlemen. We have quite a treat for

you. We've been able to coax superstar James Taylor in here

to Mission Control to wish you well and play you a little

bit of his own brand of laid-back adult contemporary music.

Homer: Wow, former president James Taylor.

    Taylor: How ya doin', fellas?

Buzz: With all due respect, Mr. Taylor, this isn't the best time

for your unique brand of bittersweet folk rock. We have a

potentially critical situation here. I'm sure you'll

    understand.

Taylor: Listen, Aldrin, I'm not as laid back as people think. Now

here's the deal: I'm going to play, and you're going to

    float there and like it.

    [sings]

    When you're down, and troubled,

And you need a helping hand,

And nothing, oh, nothing is going right...

-- Strangely apt choice of lyrics, "Deep Space Homer"

Kent Brockman reports on Channel Six.

Kent: We're just about to get our first pictures from inside the

spacecraft with "average-naut" Homer Simpson, and we'd like to

    -- aah!

[Camera shows a close-up of an ant floating in front of the

    three astronauts]

    Everyone: Aah!

Kent: Ladies and gentlemen, er, we've just lost the picture, but,

uh, what we've seen speaks for itself. The Corvair spacecraft

has been taken over -- "conquered", if you will -- by a master

race of giant space ants. It's difficult to tell from this

vantage point whether they will consume the captive earth men

or merely enslave them. One thing is for certain, there is no

stopping them; the ants will soon be here.

And I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords. I'd like to

remind them that as a trusted TV personality, I can be helpful

in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar

    caves.

Marge: Mmm, don't worry, kids. I'm sure your father's all right.

Lisa: What are you basing that on, Mom?

    [pause]

Marge: [with forced cheer] Who wants ginger snaps?

-- I do! Me too, please!, "Deep Space Homer"

James Taylor continues to sing to the hapless astronauts. "{There's

hours of time on the telephone line,/Talking 'bout things to

come.}/Sweet dreams, and flying machines,/And pieces on the ground --

um..." He pauses, then continues, "Sweet dreams, and flying

    machines,/Flying safely through the air..."

Things go from bad to worse on the spaceship. Some of the ants land on

the controls and crawl into them.

Race: Oh my God, the ants are shorting out our navigation systems!

[the astronauts smack back and forth into the walls]

Taylor: Ants, huh? We had quite a severe ant problem at the vineyard

this year. I had Art Garfunkel come by with his compressor,

and we created a total vacuum outside the house, and we blew

the ants out the front door. But I'm sure you high-tech NASA

people could care less about our resort-town ways.

    Assistant: [menacing] Quiet, you --

Scientist: Wait a minute...this unkempt youngster might just be on to

    something.

    -- Unkempt? Young? Naah.

  6. Yeah, I can see it now

The distant red neon shivered in the heat

I was feeling like a stranger in a strange land

You know where people play games with the night

God, it was too hot to sleep

I followed the sound of a jukebox coming from up the levee

All of a sudden I could hear somebody whistling

    Fromright behind me

I turned around and she said

"Why do you always end up down at Nick's Cafe?"

I said "I don't know, the wind just kind of pushed me this way."

    She said "Hang the rich."

    Catch the blue train

    To places never been before

    Look for me

    Somewhere down the crazy river

    Somewhere down the crazy river

    Catch the blue train

    All the way to Kokomo

    You can find me

    Somewhere down the crazy river

    Somewhere down the crazy river

    Take a picture of this

The fields are empty, abandoned '59 Chevy

Laying in the back seat listening to Little Willie John

Yea, that's when time stood still

You know, I think I'm gonna go down to Madam X

And let her read my mind

She said "That Voodoo stuff don't do nothing for me."

    I'm a man with a clear destination

    I'm a man with a broad imagination

You fog the mind, you stir the soul

    I can't find, ... no control

    Catch the blue train

    To places never been before

    Look for me

    Somewhere down the crazy river

    Somewhere down the crazy river

    Catch the blue train

    All the way to Kokomo

    You can find me

    Somewhere down the crazy river

    Somewhere down the crazy river

    Wait, did you hear that

Oh this is sure stirring up some ghosts for me

She said "There's one thing you've got to learn

Is not to be afraid of it."

I said "No, I like it, I like it, it's good."

She said "You like it now

But you'll learn to love it later."

I been spellbound - falling in trances

I been spellbound - falling in trances

You give me shivers - chills and fever

I been spellbound - somewhere down the crazy river

  7. Just stumbled on this thread. I own a 2x12 Hot Rod Deville. I would have no problem recommending it but the loudness is a factor. I don't think I have ever had it above "4" and that includes playing live. You can't really get that nice screaming tube sound with it so low.

I have thought about getting another amp so it's good to hear your thoughts. I was actually thinking about something like a Mesa/Boogie but I do love that Fender sound.

  8. Along the lines of bad performers. Saw David Cook on SNL last night. Now I know it's uncool to bag on such an easy mark but I had to get this off my chest. He actually seems like he is talented and could be something but watching his band last night you could just tell there was some David Cook marketing committee that picked his band members. They were straight out of the "How to look and act like a rock star" manual. I was watching it and to me it just felt so Spinal Tap, the poses and faces they were making. What I was wondering is, am I just getting really old and cynical about bands or were there tons of other people watching and thinking the same thing? Maybe this is very obvious to everyone considering where he came from and all but he did have the option of going the "Genuine" route and not go all Nickelback on the world. Anyways, I feel better.

I'm no fan of James Taylor but I will take him over that marketing creation I saw last night any day.

  9. I've heard/read rumors about a 5-night run at Red Rocks....

Have not heard that yet. I know the Red Rocks concerts are usually announced in March or something. So far only the Mormon Tabernacle choir is confirmed for Red Rocks in June. Do they sell beer at that one?
