  1. Saw them do "Gideon" on Letterman and ran out and bought "Z" the next day.

I got confused and watched "Across the Universe" because I heard Jim James was in it and I was so confused when it ended and I did not remember seeing him. Then I realized it was "I'm not there" I was thinking about.

I'm not a bright man in general.

  2. Actually I have never heard "Spanish Rose" but I will check it out so thanks for the tip. I'm always up for good music. I will be the first to admit I have not heard much Van Morrison because I have never heard any that really appealed to me enough to dig deeper. My experience has been people yelling at our band in bars to "Play brown eyed girl" (which I'm sad to report we have). I have done acoustic shows where we played "Into the Mystic" and that's a great song. Other than that, not much experience. There seems to be some love for him here so that's enough for me, I could be way off. I just never liked that song in the Last Waltz but I do agree it's "an enigmatric, spirited, up-beat, and heart-felt rendition".

Not that it matters but in keeping with the theme of Robbie Robertson, isn't Van Morrison supposed to be kind of a douche? He never comes across well in interviews I have read.

  3. I also went with a bunch of people that are huge fans of the Crowes and have seen them dozens of times and they literally thought it was the worst Crowes show they had ever seen. The real show may have been next door at Cervantes with Alvin Youngblood Hart. That is a bad man.

  4. Wow, guess I'm in the minority here but then again I always thought Van Morrison was over rated except for maybe astral weeks. To each his own. And there is no question The Band is a group of talented people. But to deny that Robbie Robertson was not the most important member from a songwriting perspective is just silly. And I agree, his first solo album is fantastic. Storyville is OK but not as good.

  5. Well they also brought out "Vetiver" the opening band to do "you ain't going nowhere" and a painfully long "Will the circle be unbroken". I was not impressed with "Vetiver" at all. Seemed like a really boring version of a group trying to sound like the Band.

  6. Just saw the Black Crowes last night. Not sure what to think. They are definitely going down the jam band road. Lots of noodling and extended jams. The new music just does not hold up next to the old stuff and I miss Marc Ford. Luther Dickinson is actually really good and looks like he is enjoying thing more than the others who at timess seemed to be phoning it in. I don't know, I saw them 15 years ago and they were so much better.

They are still better than a lot of bands out there but they need to get some MOJO back. Chris Robinson still sounds really good.

  7. Highlight, Staples singers doing the weight.

Lowlight, Van Morrison bulging out of his ugly polyester pant suit and singing a crappy version of a crappy song.

Robbie was the true talent in the band so I guess is allowed to be a dick.

By the way, Robbie's solo album from 1990 is awesome. "Fallen Angel" about Richard Manuel is a great song, up there with "Danko Manuel" by Drive by Truckers.

Not sure I believe the story about Diamond and Dylan but you never know.

I also heard Dylan went up to Barry Manilow and said some really nice things (Can't remember what) one time and to this day Barry doesn't know if he was being genuine or sarcastic.

  8. Most people are not into guitar wanking that don't play guitar but I think Satriani is a cut above a lot of other guitar players from that time. As with many bands, the stuff you here on the radio is the more watered down stuff. There is some great stuff off his pre surfing with the alien albums. A little more soul than people like Malmsteen. He at least had a ton of melody in his songs. He did start singing on some later albums which did not work too well. Nothing wrong with Vai getting him through the door, would not be the first person in music to use a connection to get somewhere. Surfing with the Alien is a great album. I know many people that don't play and no nothing about guitar that love that album. There is some real soul in places.

  9. I know this is a Wilco message board but I have to learn "3 strange days" by school of fish by this weekend and I don't have time to sit down and figure it out. The tabs on the web seem like crap to me. Can anybody help out with at least the intro chords? I will gladly figure out the song of your choice in the future! Thanks.
