  1. Heard IATTBYH on KEXP while driving down Broadway this morning. Almost hit the trolly. I mean I've heard that song hundreds of times before and KEXP usually plays really good stuff, but it was so unexpected to hear that particular song at that particular time that it hit me like a ton of bricks.

It was like hearing it for the first time all over again  :dj

  2. That Jack White acoustic record comes out too. That's all that I'm aware of though.

I know the new Head and the Heart record comes it that day, I wasn't tracking the Jack White one. Plus everything else that was mentioned in this thread.

It's going to be a good week for music.

  3. It's like a long lost Pavement song!

This album is becoming more of the 'fucked-up country record' that I could have ever imagined coming from Wilco.  I love it   :thumbup

  4. Ryan on KCRW today talking about his new album:

“I don’t think I’ve ever worked on anything harder than I have on it, and I’m still working on it, which is amazing. In fact, when I leave here, I go straight over to work on it more. And I think, probably, it’s the most songs I ever wrote for a record and it’s the most emotional…whatever this process was, was so cathartic, and was cathartic in a way where I actually made songs where I would listen back to what I had to say and go, ‘That is really messed up.’ Or listen to something and go, ‘There’s actual hope in there.’ What does that mean? I really let the process become part of me this time.”

“I’ve really found a way to try to become optimistic and to find ways of writing that can be helpful to myself, and that’s maybe been a huge challenge.”

This sounds really exciting. Honestly I didn't really pay attention to Ryan's last couple of albums so maybe I'll go ahead and pick this one up.

Has anyone gotten the Heartbreaker reissue on vinyl yet? (Just the standard reissue, not the deluxe box set).

revisiting Love is Hell.  that album holds up well and is so much better out of the context of his then current drama.  needs an updated cover though.

Hell yeah. Love is Hell has always been one of my favorites of his.

  5. I consider Random Name Generator to be part of a wonderful line of Wilco word play songs like "Pot Kettle Black" (which is my favorite on YHF), " I'm a Wheel", "Kingpin", and to some degree the most successful of them all, "You Are My Face" because the word play is interwoven into a more focused song. But I do think that those used to be more nestled in with songs that felt more urgent. I will parrot Albert Tatlock in pointing to "Where do I Begin" as being a really powerful song. Personally I would also say that everything from "Taste the Ceiling" to "Magnetized" with the exception of maybe "Pickled Ginger" are part of an overarching lyrical theme.

Exactly. There's as much emotion in RNG as there is in songs like Jesus Etc. or At Least That's What You Said. I think a lot of people have a hard time understanding/deciphering Jeff's indirect lyrics and write those songs off as nonsense songs, but if you look at those lyrics there's plenty there, even if Jeff tends to disguise their meaning.

I change my name every once in a while

A miracle every once in a while

I'm almost certain this is Jeff responding to criticism about Wilco not making a record that sounds like Wilco.

Come on, cuff me to the weed with some wine

If I miss your breeze or you miss mine

I kinda like it when I make you cry

A miracle every once in a while

That right there is just as poetic as anything else that Wilco has done.

  6. On a humorous note, has anyone received an email from Wilco HQ regarding Schmilco? I find it funny that they asked for emails and we found out a lot of stuff on our own. I'm guessing it'll come in very soon.

I've received three from them so far. I'm guessing they really want us to know that Wilco has a new album coming out...

  7. Is this part of the, as Jeff puts it, "fucked-up country record" that is supposed to be the follow up to Star Wars? Kind of sounds like it!

    Thanks, Wilco.

  8. Great read, thanks for posting!

Star Wars was the more playful and rocky, glammy sounding record, and this one is a little more of a fucked-up country record or something.

I think I remember him saying something like this about the new Wilco album before.

  9. If I ranked the Radiohead albums today it would look like this. And my list could very well be different tomorrow depending on what kind of mood I'm in:

    Kid A

    A Moon Shaped Pool

    Ok Computer

    The Bends

    In Rainbows

    Amnesiac

    The King of Limbs

    Hail to the Theif

    Pablo Honey

And since it seems like we're comparing Radiohead rankings to Wilco rankings my current Wilco ranking is:

    Star Wars

    YHF

    AGIB

    SBS

    WTA

    TWL

    BT

    ST

    AM

  10. I'm really enjoying the album right away as well, I enjoyed TKOL but I think this album is already up with In Rainbows, or maybe even better.

It's going to take repeated listens to really get a sense of it but even after the first listen I can tell that it's something special, even for Radiohead.

The fact that Radiohead released an album this good makes me happy :)
