  3. i really like mark lamarr - he's also a very good comedy writer (helped write one of my favourite modern comedy series "15 storeys high"). what do you think of him?

  6. ok, but if you substitute Bob Dylan, The Times They Are A-Changin', Self Portrait, Planet Waves & Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid for Desire, Oh Mercy, World Gone Wrong, Time Out Of Mind & Love & Theft you'd be equal on the numbers, but be listening to far better albums. no extra time needed - it's easy.
  7. What, you've never heard DESIRE? - for one. You really should. My logic was not to say that they were not essential, it was to say that the same thing can be said for loads of other essential sounding musicians (eg stax - booker t and the mgs) who were only paid as session men, eventhough without them the music would have been entirely different. does John Simon bitch about not getting his due? - he produced the stuff and played on it too, and if you hear his other work you can definately see he had a massive part to play in the sound.
  8. yeah, but they were completely essential to the sound of whole record labels. the stax musicians too. not many bands split things evenly - you named 2, but i like neither of those two myself, so it doesn't work for me on a creative level - and that's about all i'd care for, seeing as how i am not them. you very rarely hear any of these poor musicians who pissed their money up the wall on drugs and the high life say they are glad people like robbie robertson was there to give them some focus for how ever long it lasted in their lives. i don't really care either way, who wrote what in any band
  9. have you heard bob dylan when he worked with Sly & Robbie, or when he recorded with Slash on guitar and all the rest of that crap he did in the 1980s? he's only as good as the musicians he plays with, too - like most people. does he pay al kooper royalties for like a rolling stone? also, wouldn't those motown session players and the wrecking crew be billionaries by now if that notion stood for anything?

  12. i think the lyrics are fine, and the music is far better than a lot of modern times, which is something i certainly do agree with you on. that version of someday baby is great, it'd be funny to think that there is probably a whole album of different versions of the songs from modern times that is as good as this. it's just such a pain in the arse about the whole third disc bullshit. there are quite a few songs on that (duncan & brady for example) that i'd love to have a good version of.
  13. yeah, well i guess i'm not interested in his stuff after the band either, but his film work at least was something he wanted to do, and he was successful with it. the others just floundered. maybe danko did ok for a while, but that's about it. the same complaints always come up about robbie robertson - him taking all the credit (which isn't true) and him over-dubbing and singing into a dead mic. so what? the concert that the people attended was "the concert" and the film is a "film of a concert" - there is a difference. it's not like people bitch that han solo wasn't really flying in space i
  14. i didn't mean, what they sounded like when he wasn't singing. i meant when he wasn't in the band - jubilation, high on the hog, jericho. apart from islands, which is total guff, all the other robertson albums are really good - stage fright, and cahoots in particular.
  15. if they re-did most of the music again in the studio, as has been said, is it not likely that robbie robertson's vocals were removed, i also assume they did multi-tracking so even then in a rough version you could just remove the mic if the singing was off, as opposed to his mic being turned off at the time? it's just a theory. maybe imsjry can help answer that, seeing as how he has the unedited version. i assume everyone has heard what the band sounded like without robbie robertson? you'd have thought the others wouldn't have needed him seeing as they helped write all the songs, and that ev
  16. i personally feel i could just as well read that story, and take as much away from it as the film offers me. i'd say it's a pretty bog-standard rock-documentary, and certainly not well filmed. which is why i found it very funny that wilco pulled the plug on that concert film they'd planned during the agib tour, cos they weren't impressed with the end product - didn't they watch i'm trying to break your heart? the music's very very good though. the style, editing, filming, basically everything, of the last waltz is incredible. i can't really think of anything that matches up to it. although g

  20. the super furry animals write some great protest songs, but they aren't american - don't know if them being american is essential or not, but they tend to write about america if that helps. liberty belle
