  1. i can't really think of anything that original that radiohead have ever really done - they make good music, and always have, but nothing to put them head and shoulders above sfa (and they have influenced a whole bunch of shit - which can't be said for sfa). maybe super furry animals haven't done anything truly original either, musically - although i personally think mixing dance/techno elements into their music, especially on guerrilla was new. just from album to album they've experimented with their sound and been successful doing so - not so much so for radiohead, although they've definately
  2. i don't really take much notice of lyrics, really by anyone that much (not even bob dylan - gasp!) - i notice when words don't fit with the music, or are silly, but that's all. i do think you can kind of have unhappy lyrics with happy music though, and the overall effect is one of happiness. i wouldn't say they make happy music out of choice so much - they're not steps - it's just i feel happy listening to them - just in terms of a simple thing like smiling when a melodic motif appears. as opposed to feeling sad at any time, regarding any specific thing they do.
  3. i think people tend to give more weight to miserable music, like being happy is not such an important emotion artistically. which is why radiohead were seen as better than super furry animals for example, who in my view made better, more inventitive, music during that same period, but were not given such critical props (i can't believe i typed props). animal collective make music to be happy to, and you can dance to it - those things must count for something surely?! and you're still wrong about joanna newsom, even though you're right about animal collective.
  4. they're definately not the radiohead of the 00's - that wouldn't be such a nice thing to say at all.
  5. i thought that was the good thing about them. although, that is kind of what you think about joanna newsom's voice - the childish, all over the place thing - isn't it? i personally don't hear anything childish about animal collective now (maybe in the past), but personally i think they are making the most sophisticated sounding music at the moment - in terms of what they are doing with harmonies, and production etc... np/ graham nash - songs for beginners
  6. it's hardly the trend. far far more people kill themselves alone than go on a gun crazy rampage - whatever the media might believe. i also think when they say poeple egged him on etc... it's a bit misleading; it's not like they were in the same room with him, it's often hard to tell exactly what people's intent is on the internet, as we all know. still, a very sad story.
  7. have you heard the new stuff? brothersport couldn't ever make anyone angry.
  8. still brother sport - animal collective and clips of "also frightened" and "bluish" - animal collective that little clip of bluish is just incredible.
  9. i'm enjoying merlin, and i enjoyed robin hood. they're far from perfect, but there is something good about them. the only thing i find slightly annoying about merlin is it has a talking dragon in it - ok, it's john hurt's voice, but still it's something that could have been left out of the show (apart from anything else, they don't have the budget to make it look even slightly good). i just can't say the same for the new doctor who, which i think is a mess - it's a show that could have benefited from a large ritalin perscription, or at least cutting out the fizzy pop for the writers, direct
  10. this is very interesting you say this. because the whole jumping the shark idea is a joke i'm using for a medieval thing i'm working on (don't really want to explain), the joke is that the main character must "jump the lark" - instead of the shark - for a bet because he's become a knight, but the other knights believe him to be useless, and he wants to prove his worth. but, also another joke is that there is a duchy (a duchy is an area of land owned by a duke or duchess) where the law is that travels may only pass it 'pon de left hand side. just funny that those two random things can be ment
  11. turns out i made up a lot of the episode. i think it was this one, maybe: i think maybe at the end of the first part he backed out, but then in part 2 jumps it. or else i'm talking bollocks again.
  12. no. silly. if he thought that jumping stuff on his bike was stupid, then deep down he must have been appalled at the stupidity involved in jumping a shark in some kind of makeshift water fishing-net-prison. if he'd seen into the future that first time, maybe he'd have jumped the cars, or bus, or the diner, whatever it was - i can't remember.
  13. why don't you like Holland so much, though? that just sounds so fresh and modern to me.
  14. yeah, that is right. but, i personally think the fonz jumping the shark was a logical step forward for the character, he couldn't stay in the garage all his life now, could he? what else was he to do? i actually think i've seen the episode on tv once before but can't remember how or why he had to jump it - was it a bet, and were they all on holiday or something? i'm sure i've seen an episode where he's supposed to jump something on his bike, but pulls out at the end - saying it's stupid. if only he'd seen what was to come!
  15. alright. pet sounds, sunflower, surf's up, love you, holland (my favourite!), friends (second favourite!), smiley smile, 20/20, carl & the passions "so tough" people will say probably carl & passions is not very good, or smiley smile, for example - but i could say the same for let it be. the bigger point is that they are all proper albums wihtout filler. if a band produced those albums today people would be raving about them. i could also have included today! or summer days (and summer nights) in the list too, but they have 1 or 2 tracks that are a bit filler-like.
  16. i can't think of anyone at the moment. i just wanted to say if you're getting into harry nilsson then you've gotta pick up "harry" and "nilsson sings newman" - it's a double cd, and my favourite reissue of his. some great songs - obviously nilsson sings newman is entirely randy newman songs, which is nice!
  17. i don't know. i think the beach boys have made more albums i'd call great than the beatles have. certainly albums i'd call "albums", as you say. the beatles have rubber soul through to let it be, which is 6 albums i'd call proper albums without filler. and the beach boys have about 9 albums i would recommend having. then as for the albums with some great tracks and some filler, the beach boys outweigh the beatles on that too. i wouldn't worry about the beatles doing twofers anyway - it's never ever going to happen.
  18. the beach boys two-fer albums looked great, and sounded great, and were cheap enough. so it can be done well. these beatles reissues are going to cost maximum price, i can put money on that.
  19. brother sport - animal collective and clips of "also frightened" and "bluish" - animal collective this album is going to go massive, judging from these tracks
  20. i've got no problem with those guys wanting to make some money from it all, it's just slightly sad that the only way they can make it is by this sort of thing. they get old age pensions soon anyway. poptodd said in his first post, it'll either be great or crap - i don't think so, it's just going to be somewhere inbetween the two - like all these things are, they aren't going to take any risks, and nobody's going to get too excited either - it's just a nice little earner, give the people what they want.
  21. i do get slightly tired of being a grump . . . but, ronnie lane WAS the faces. and even if he was still alive and taking part, it's just a bunch of old men pretending to be young again playing their hits with slightly less conviction than a tribute act. a bit like the kinks, it was good whilst it lasted - now find something else to do.
  22. jamie hewlett drew the comic (from gorillaz, and 'monkey: journey to the west' - the opera based on the chinese monkey legend)
  23. deerhunter - microcastle. it's good. np. sandy salisbury - sandy salisbury
  24. it's not a bad album. i'd be urging people to buy land's end, and so on, letters, el mirage, and words & letters, by their dad, long before i'd worry too much about this, though.
