  1. Poptodd will be pleased. It is a great album, plus all those bonus tracks (I don't know how Spoonful made the actual album, rather than Big Mouth USA - but apart from that, it's a pretty incredible southern country rock album) By the way, anyone that likes this should also try and pick up Nobody's Fool by Dan Penn - I'm pretty sure it's in print on cd, and that's another southern country/soul lost classic. NP
  2. the vinyl rip of this makes the vocals sound much clearer now, if anyone wasn't happy with the 160 rip.
  3. go on then, tell us what's wrong with it?....
  4. I can certainly hear The Beach Boys in what they do in the sense that they have a number of vocal parts at the same time which move about in the arrangment from backing to lead (i'm not explaining that right, but basically the vocal parts are often very fluid in terms of where they fit in the mix) - as opposed to lead vocals with people doing the conventional ooh and ahh noises in the background. Basically - it's not boring - and some effort has been made to actually arrange the vocals rather than merely sing the lead melody. And, I can't see how sounding like The Beach Boys is a bad thing in
  5. i like how you say "e" as in "email" as opposed to just saying i pronounce it "E" - or am i saying the "e" in "email" wrong too, now?
  6. crickey! i've been pronouncing it BON (like bon jovi) EYE (like the thing you see stuff with) and VUR (like an chinaman saying fur).
  7. well ok. but, obviously SOME of us can pronounce words in standard english. whereas NONE of you can. really though, most dialects in england still pronounce standard words correctly, it's more that they have their own terms for the same word which they use instead sometimes. if someone from yorkshire wants to ask "how are you today?" it's not like they say "Hoe Ary You Todd Day?" they'd say actual words from yorkshire to say the same thing - which is not quite the same as pronouncing it differently. and if they want to write "how are you today?" they write it the same way as that - they don't
  8. well the word "card shark" and "card sharp" came from developing european words. meaning that like lots of other words - america took the word and changed it slightly. this is easier to see in the modern world, with modern terms because, whilst this happened, for example with english words which we bastardised from french or german etc..., we did it a long time ago, and so it is not as easy to spot. still nothing?
  9. it does look good on the one hand, but all i kept thinking was - and this is if i had the money to even think about buying it - it'd get very tedious very quickly to try and navigate all that when you want to stick on a song or two. he's really pulled it out the bag with innovation on the one hand, but failed to grasp that people want things easily at their fingertips - they don't want to have to traverse a fake filing cabinet in search of a song every time they get the urge to play it. also - neil young is not good looking enough for me to want to look at THAT many pics of him. well, and he
  10. it doesn't only say that. it says that one is used as a positive and one as a negative - not which came first. meaning that the words are not the same by definition. it also says that not everyone agrees with this. if this argument were the bon iver album, it'd be on my list this year, and last year too!
  11. that simply points out that things aren't set in stone, therefore following that notion through in regard to the most interesting thing about Bon Iver's album (that being it's release date), we can conclude that this too is not set in stone as well. or not? - spunky backpack
  12. i'd imagine that if it plays through your head long enough you probably will go slightly mad, if not very.
  13. no. it's just another term for a card sharp. it's how language evolves. i mean, it's worth noting that americans generally aren't too hot at pronouncing english words in the first place - they say them how they wish, meaning they evolve them. otherwise we'd all be speaking greek now, wouldn't we.
  14. is it just 'ernie the fastest milkman in the west' over and over again?
  15. i had it on my 2004 list, when Mr Bon was first coming up with the songs in his head.
  16. i've seen that, but the cover makes it look very cheap so it put me off. have you heard it then?
  17. i have not actually heard that, so i'll check it out i thought that was 2007 - it was definately really early in the year - that would definately be on my list. ok new list: 01 Pacific Ocean Blue - Dennis Wilson 02 Paint America Love - Lou Christie 03 Isle Of View/The Original Tap Dancing Kid - Jimmie Spheeris 04 Love Is Overtaking Me - Arthur Russell 05 The Sounds Of Our Time - Jim Ford 06 Tell Tale Signs - Bob Dylan 07 Til The Band Comes In - Scott Walker 08 Veedon Fleece - Van Morrison 09 Jesus Of Cool - Nick Lowe 10 Songs For Beginners - Graham Nash
  18. ok, seeing as how the whole comp/reissue thing is being mentioned. top 10 comps/reissues (and i'll take all of these over my top 10 new stuff): 01 Pacific Ocean Blue - Dennis Wilson 02 Paint America Love - Lou Christie 03 Isle Of View/The Original Tap Dancing Kid - Jimmie Spheeris 04 Love Is Overtaking Me - Arthur Russell 05 Tell Tale Signs - Bob Dylan 06 Til The Band Comes In - Scott Walker 07 Veedon Fleece - Van Morrison 08 Jesus Of Cool - Nick Lowe 09 Songs For Beginners - Graham Nash 10 Brighten The Corners - Pavement
  19. well, i'm sure he'd at least be entitled to some kind of special parking badge for his car, if nothing else.
  20. did the little invalid kid with the funny name win?
  21. at least you tried them. i wouldn't bother hurting yourself any further now though; i think you're probably allergic.
  22. i'm not entirely sure where you're getting this from, but i always find it funny that people said he stole the credit when you look at who gets credit on the first 2 albums - there's a lot of co-writes, and then interestingly enough when danko, helm and manuel started living the rock and roll life-style on the subsequent albums robbie must have taken advantage of the heroin hazy and taken all their songs they were pumping out at break-kneck pace, without them looking. (manuel wrote 3 songs on the first album, plus dylan/manuel 1, robertson 4, and dylan/danko 1, just for example - that's hardly
  23. you should listen to them a lot more. if nothing else, their fans make some great videos! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4rvPX8UlQ78&...feature=related their new stuff sounds like this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wEIhXPK0TSM only better
  24. there's my top 10. in order: 01 tv on the radio - dear science 02 grouper - dragging a dead deer up a hill 03 neon neon - stainless style 04 beach house - devotion 05 el guincho - alegranza 06 my morning jacket - evil urges 07 deerhunter - microcastle 08 koushik - out my window 09 department of eagles - in ear park 10 plants and animals - parc avenue not the best year, by a long shot. i don't think i'd fight anyone over the right to call any of them either brilliant or appalling, but there we go.
  25. have a listen to the handy streaming audio they've got underneath. i think that's actually quite a good thing to have really, because it's nice to hear what they are talking about when these sites review stuff. i'm glade they've got plants & animals on their list. i thought that was a very good album this year of well written songs; and obviously tv on the radio is probably going to be on most sites lists, which is a good thing.
