  1. anything by Ella Jenkins (even if she does look like Nelson Mandela) - this, for example, is a good one. listen to "little charlie just off the pickle boat" and you'll see what i mean.
  2. no. if you asked NME readers, then maybe. if you asked Smash Hits readers they'd say Take That. i'd actually probably imagine if you asked everyone in the country then Take That would come out on top, or Boyzone, or someone like that.
  3. lol - actually, i've never seen that, although i do know what it's about. anyway, he's gay in dog day afternoon, so it's no big deal (and i've probably now ruined the story for anyone that's never seen it).
  4. Al Pacino, mainly because Dog Day Afternoon is one of the greatest american films ever. He's more likeable too.
  5. i liked it - the singing could have been a lot better (say, the guys from TV On The Radio doing it), but it's made me think there is potential in this.
  6. they had that country sound already on a lot of their songs. i just see the albums before as a build up to that one, and then after that, with sweethearts, they just kind of became another band enitrely. but notorious is the peak of what they were doing in the early days (not really in terms of the singles, but the other album tracks when they were experimenting with their style a bit more).
  7. i wouldn't have said there was anything transitional about notorious at all, it's more like the culmination of what they were doing in various songs on various albums up until that point, put together without any filler. i think they'd been working up to it for some time. the only thing that slightly iggles me at times is the over use of phasing - it doesn't ruin the songs it's used on, but it kind of dates them a bit.
  8. yeah, it's a hammered dulcimer (this isn't a guess, it's a fact)
  9. i have an issue with a band that could write something as cool as Peace Frog and then ruin it with a shit poem. that kind of somes them up for me - they'd be great without the shit poems, and all that attempted wisdom. the byrds, on the other hand, rarely put a foot wrong (although gene clark's lyrics sometimes step over into the "shit-poet zone" - that's two doors down from the twilight zone, just in case you were wondering)
  10. gunter grass - the tin drum (book) the tin drum (film) all of werner herzogs work F. W. Murnau films Fritz Lang's films Franz Kafka, obviously a lot of them have been said, but I didn't see anyone mention Kafka oh, and Das Boot for TV
  11. Right, I rushed this a bit, but it's good enough for people to get a feel of their sound pre-disco. I avoided all the big hits; not that I don't like them, more that I assume everyone has heard them, and if not then this'll make you go out and find them anyway. Also half this is remastered (they are slowly remastering all their back catalogue in order, but have only finished the first 3 so far) so the sound quality differs a bit - you can certainly hear how much better their arrangements sound with the remastering process. 01 I.O.I.O 02 Turn Of The Century 03 Marley Purt Drive 04 Come Home J
  12. if any of you non-bee gees lovers want me to show you what you're missing out on with a mix of their best stuff (it'll be pre-disco, cos i'm not too keen on them from then on), then let me know. i still can't believe why they aren't as well known amongst you lot.
  13. i find it a bit strange that everyone so far likes the kinks, but not everyone likes the bee gees or the beach boys. anyone care to explain why?
  14. me, i think: Bee Gees - Man For All Seasons Beach Boys - Be Here In The Morning The Kinks - Do You Remember Walter
  15. what? is it that i'm not waffley versatile enough? i actually found a bittorrent with the stems, so i'm alright now anyway. they should have sold them on their site like the album, then i'd have bought them quite happily - i just really hate the idea of iTunes.
  16. anyone know how or where to get these without having iTunes? i would really like to have some fun remixing it, but i really don't want to have to install iTunes and all that rubbish just to do it.
  17. yeah, and when you (llynn that is) said yousendit, did you mean you'd send it? if so, i'd love it too. have you heard lazy bones!! by witch - they're from the same place, and it's a great album too. worth checking out if you like this.
  18. that sounds great. is it readily available everywhere, or on some special label or other? have you got any details? np. that preview, and liking it
  19. the most limited album release is probably "the in sound from way out!" by the beastie boys on yello vinyl, which is limited to 5000, but i'm not entirely sure how much it's worth. i've got all the beatles albums in mono first pressings, but not in mint condition. and i tend to know more about the value of my cds which often are worth far far more than any of my vinyl - take "king of rock n roll: the complete reprise recordings" by little richard on cd which was only a very limited amount of pressings so people are selling it for this much on amazon. same goes for quite a few other cds i've go
  20. what does "geezer" mean in america? cos in england it just means someone that's a little bit waah, a little bit waaay, a little bit . . . like mike skinner from the streets. it has nothing to do with age.
  21. can spelling it wrong twice still be classed as a typo? and, as long as you're pronouncing it "technique-wally", i think that's a great name for the edge of something.
  22. I'd imagine they'll be robots by then . . . Evil robots . . . . . . Do you think it will be illegal to kill evil robots in 2020? . . . Can you techniqually 'kill' an evil robot? . . . Can a robot techniqually be 'evil'? . . . I can't wait until 2020 now! . . . So many questions to be answered . . . . .
