  1. I am old. Most of my pre-internet music discoveries were from hearing bands on college radio stations, reading about them in music magazines, and by word of mouth.

Initially (1990’s-2000’s), the internet gave me more exposure to word of mouth via message boards very much like this one, but music magazines and in-store listening kiosks also helped greatly.

The last ten years have become information overload. There are no more music stores, but with all of youtube and spotify, there is endless choice and so I find I listen to less new music because it is simply overwhelming and there aren’t enough hours in the day. Music magazines that suit my taste have either disappeared or become prohibitively expensive. Online music publications don’t really work for me - I’m not exactly sure why..

  2. Thanks chuckrh. It’s nice to hear the perspective of someone who is a fan of all three acts (Finn, FM, Petty). I am one of the biggest Neil Finn fans on the planet, but am having a very hard time coming to terms with his joining this band. I was a big FM/Stevie fan 35 - 40 years ago, but over the years came to focus mainly on Lindsey’s solo work, so that contributes to my struggle with the current situation. It sounds like a good night of music. :). Not sure I want to blow $200+ on it though.

  3. Fleetwood Mac tonight. I'm a huge Neil Finn fan, so I'm pretty excited about it. Have seen a few vids of Mike Campbell tearing it up, too. I like Lindsey Buckingham plenty but this new lineup is interesting to me.

    Please report back!

  4. yeah it's a bit of a drag.

i did an interview w/ Howe Gelb some years back and we talked about Joey a bit at the end... i ended up not putting it in the published piece but should probably post the full version sometime... he basically said that Joey felt like he needed a go at the brass ring and took Howe's drummer along for the ride. i don't think Howe was bitter about it (though i'm sure he felt bitter at the time), just that they had different expectations of their place in the music industry.

I think it’s pretty clear that Joey has been going for the brass ring. Ironically, I think he would be held in higher esteem in the music industry if he had stayed the course and stuck to what he’s really good at. Joey is a great soundscape artist, and many of the recordings he has had a hand in are among my favorite things in the world. But a world class songwriter/hitmaker, not so much.
  5. yep. that's their best record.

the first time i saw Calexico was pretty early on, and they invited Pinetop 7 to get on stage for the last song, a brilliant runthrough of this. i've never seen them play it again. sad face.

OMG what an amazing song. I have seen Calexico many times, but never got to see them play this. I have a live recording that even blows this recording out of the water. Whatever happened to that Calexico? sad face.
  6. On a similar note, I saw The Feelies in Jersey City tonight and they played a full set of Velvet Underground songs. It was amazing and then they did a set of their own material plus three encores with covers of The Beatles, Stones, Neil Young, Patti Smith and The Modern Lovers. What an amazing show.

Sounds fantastic! I love the Feelies.

I can probably guess what some of those covers were based on songs they’ve recorded over the years (Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey or The Inner Light, Paint it Black, Dancing Barefoot). What Neil Young song did they do?

  7. Yep - I was digging into their catalogue trying to decide where to start, so I pre-ordered that a couple weeks ago.  Can't wait to hear it!

As a Calexico fan who started with The Black Light back when it was released, I am very interested to hear the thoughts of someone who discovered the band with the Thread That Keeps Us. They are a completely different band now, so I am truly curious to hear your thoughts on the old stuff.
  8. you keep calendars that are 20-30 years old?

    i don't.

No, I don’t. But I thought your initial post was questioning having a calendar at all, even a current one.

The only time I ever saved calendars was for a few years in the 90’s when I knew I wanted to harvest some of the artwork for framing. I eventually did that, and those calendars are long gone. I don’t think I ever looked at what was written on them the entire time I had them once a new year started. Every Jan 1, the old calendar goes into recycle and the new one goes up on the wall.

  9. who has calendars?

Oh come on, in 1982, if you had a life to keep track of, you had a calendar.

Don’t you have an electronic calendar?

I actually do still have a kitchen wall calendar that duplicates my electronic calendar, mainly because I like the monthly change of artwork!

  10. Arthur Buck

Holy cow, I did not know this collaboration existed until just this minute when I had to answer my question “Who the heck is Arthur Buck?”

Two of my favorite artists and I did not know! I obviously live in a cave!
