  1. I think I may have said this in another thread -- I'm just really curious as to what Tweedy songs weren't "fit" for Wilco and required a different band to present whatever sound Jeff is envisioning.

I don't know if it's about songs that were "fit" for Wilco, I seem to recall several quotes from various members of the band about new material sounding very nice and possibly more experimental.  Is it even possible for Jeff to write a song not "fit" for Wilco, what is Wilco but the delivery device for Jeff's songs and through the course of their existence the Wilco "sound" has changed many times.  I think it's possible he just enjoys playing with his son and wanted to do that and it's really as simple as that.  Pure speculation here, but I don't recall hearing mention of the current "solo" record until after his wife got sick, seems to me that's a pretty heavy load and really no better reason to look inward and just want to keep it in the family for now without having the "Wilco" label on it with all of those expectations.

  2. Last night was awesome!!!  The Viola Lee was one of my all time favorites!  I think Nels fit in so much better last night then he did on the first night, I'm hoping he plays more with Phil because it has some serious potential.  That line up is by far the best Phil has had since the Q.

  3. I thought Nels fit in really well. I especially liked the energy between him and John Scofield. I'll admit I would much rather hear him play noisy jazz than Dead-style jams, but I think he definitely impressed some folks last night.

I loved last night however I actually have some mixed feelings, I love Nels and I'm a big Deadhead who loves just about everything Phil Lesh, so maybe I had higher expectations, who knows.  There were times that it appeared Nels was a little too aggressive, perhaps not really knowing the songs and transitions, he just seemed to go full tilt instead of easing his way into the jams, not so much of a "long strange trip thing" as much as a "and here we are" kind of thing.  He certainly got some "what the f--- are you doing looks from John K", however there were times John K seemed to enjoy it too.  Phil clearly loves Nels, no doubt about that.  I thought the interplay between Medeski and Nels was amazing, however it appeared to me at times that John S. was laying back, I was kind of hoping for more interplay between the two, maybe they both occupy the same spacey space so they had to make more room for each other.

I have no idea what Phil was trying to do with the second verse of Dark Star, to me that was cringe worthy.

  4. If it's billed currently by the festival as Wilco, why all the sudden would it change to just Tweedy- it wouldn't make sense.

I'm not saying they will, I'm just saying they can and I have a bad feeling about this, that's all.  Everywhere they list a line up it also states "Artists are subject to change without notice".  I'm trying to think of another year where Wilco's only show was at a festival, I can't come up with one off the top of my head, everyday those dates sit alone up there makes me nervous.

  5. Does anyone even  know who Ross James is?  How about Jordan Levine, he plays percussion and played with Phil last night (as did Ross), there is a percussion set up there so I'm guessing it's just a mater of time.

  6. Nels isn't in the lineup to start the show. I'll be seriously disappointed if he only plays a few songs with them and we paid for two nights of webcasts.

    My feeling exactly!

  7. Just wondering if I'm the only person checking the Wilco/Shows page everyday half expecting the Wilco Lockin' dates to turn into TWEEDY dates?  I so hope this doesn't happen, but I really haven't heard much on the Wilco front and there haven't been other "Wilco" dates announced and they kinda stick out like that proverbial sore thumb.

  8. You know, I listened to it on Spotify the other night and it was better than I recalled it, but I still think Robert's heart wasn't in it.

It's gotta be tough for singers, some of those lyrics were pretty bad, a singer can't really change the lyrics but a guitar player can change what he plays as long as he hits the key riffs and licks.

  9. Come on, man. There are plenty of good shows post-Brent. There has been plenty of good music made in this scene post-Garcia, too. It's different, of course, but a lot of it is certainly worthy of a night out of fun. I 'll never get the bashing of anything that resembles anything close to someone playing tunes that Jerry used to wail on. I appreciate the fact that I can still go out for a night and here this music. It is what it is and what it is, to me, is decent night out of memories and live music of tunes I dig.

I'll go so far as to say I've seen Phil and Furthur shows that were better then a lot of Dead shows I've seen.

  10. The venue website for the Louisville show says "Jeff Tweedy with Special Guest The Minus 5" for the June 11 date.

Songkick shows them with Jeff on June 9 and 10 (Baltimore and Washington), but not Louisville on the 11th.  And a few other dates w/o Jeff.

I'm very excited about that news.  Could get very interesting.

Now that's just weird, on my way in to work this morning I hadn't heard it in a while so I put on "Down With Wilco"!

  11. There's an interview right now on jambands.com with current members of DSO who are ripping on John saying their current guitarist is much better, particularly at the early psychedelic stuff which John was not capable of doing. Maybe they're butt hurt over John leaving, but that doesn't make them wrong.

I won't get into what DSO actually think of John or how they felt when they lost him, I've worked with a couple guys in the band and their Soundman is a real good friend of mine.  I will point out that when Phil was first putting the Q together both Rob and Jeff played three shows with Phil, Phil took Rob but passed on Jeff, he said of Jeff exactly what you are saying about John K.

Personally I'd take Jeff over John, but that's just me.  I'm not a big fan of John's voice either, and I kinda need to close my eyes and not look at him, but I do enjoy his playing, what's wrong with a guitar player playing Jerry's parts sounding like Jerry, isn't that the point?

But I disagree, this line up with Schofeild and Medeski taking things way out there while John K lays down the Jerry feel is incredible, add Nels into the mix and I'm really looking forward to this.

  12. Nels to play with Phil Lesh and friends end of May at Capitol Theater

Just picked up a ticket for the Friday show, Phil used this lineup last summer and it was outta site outta mind amazing, add Nels to that line up and we're talking about 3 hours of pure bliss!

  13. I was waiting for shows to be announced closer to the CT area, I can't make Newport, my gut was telling me he would do a show at Mass MoCA kinda like Wilco did in their off year, but I can't wait any longer and I made the Baltimore plunge, I'll miss a couple days of work and drive down, I got my tix and booked my room, I'm good to go!

If I read the announcement correctly, all of these shows are with the new band and solo?

  14. Hey linclink, I notice you're also keeping the Wilco topic alive on the Hoffman Forum.

This is weird.  I didn't do too much research on this, but just looking at the credits for WTA, I didn't notice anything that would differentiate that release from others.  But there has to be something legal going on with the royalties.

It's probably just something where the old record company owns exclusive rights for a live release of songs for X amount of time, where X has expired on SBS and prior but not WTA yet.

  15. Got word that my guitar was delayed again: until APRIL.

I fired off an angry email to customer service and just heard back:

I should have my guitar within the next week.

"I don't know where you heard April from, but it's getting ready to ship now."

I'll believe it when I see it.

    I'm breathing a little.

This has been going on for what seems like a year now, you have got to be the most patient person in the world, I can't wait to hear about it when it comes in.

  16. I've heard night 1 and night 2 so far, and night 2 you can hear his voice really straining. It actually sounds painful. That being said, his vocals still hold up most of the time. And the banter is really good. The Seattle show is probably a better show if you only want 1 show, as it has a great tracklist and sounds really great.

Isn't the Seattle show the one where someone in the first row is sick and he points out he still has a bunch of shows to do and he won't be happy if he gets sick?
