  1. I'm torn between Bridgeport, CT and Mansfield, MA. About equidistant for us.

I've never been to the venue in Bridgeprt, but the town itself is awful. Really awful.

The venue in Mansfield is nice, but the parking lot is a nightmare. It can take over an hour to get out after a show.

Again , hopefully the ticket prices will be reasonable.

    I'm hitting both shows.

The ball park is across the street from where I work, and it's a Friday so for me that's a no brainer, happy hour at the ball park ;^)

It's a small minor league park in the Independent League (not affiliated with a Major League baseball team), it's right next to the arena, train station, bus station and Long Island Ferry, and right off the highway very convenient although traffic can be a bitch.

This is as close as I'll ever get to Wilco playing in my back yard!!!!

  2. I know the song your are talking about believe me, like I said he was using Jerry's sounds, it even made me comment to my friend about how Healy had just gotten $4500 on EBay for one of Jerry's MuTrons when the going rate is around $600 or so.  He definitely nailed the "sound" right down to the rippely echo effect, but to me "channeling" would require that Jerry feel and vibe which was not present.  I'm just not a big John Mayer fan, maybe because I did sound for him way back when, I just find him to be a very sterile guitar player with not much going on, yes he's very talented and yes I do like some of his songs when they come on the radio, but in general I find him boring.

Hey Bosco, re: the Garcia channeling,  I was referring to the song before Don't Let Me Down.  My buddy and I heard it loud and clear, as did people posting on the Allmans forum (who referred to it as Fire on the Mountain).  I get you didn't hear it, but it was unmistakeable and loud and clear to us.  Then I read a RS interview with Mayer from about a month ago where he spoke about spending the last year in Montana just listening to the Dead.  No doubt in my mind it was a purposeful tribute to Jerry.  Maybe it will be on the dvd and you can give it another listen.

  3. Wow, that was a fun night inside MSG. I couldn't do it justice, nor could I piece back together all the different combinations of guitar players we witnessed. Suffice it to say, the Allmans simply killed it in the headlining slot, with Clapton joining them for a guitar romp through Why Does Love Got to be So Sad. John Mayer blew the roof off the place with his take on the Beatles Don't Let Me Down with Keith Urban, which followed a song where he completely channeled Garcia and turned the Garden into a Dead show circa 1990. He brought the house down. And then there was Buddy Guy, Booker T and Steve Cropper, Robert Cray, Gary Clark Jr. I'll have to go through the Crossroads tweets to put it all back together, but it was a great night. With the revolving stage and side stage interlude sets hosted by Dan Akyroyd, there was never a break from 7:30 till the Allmans finished at 12:20.

I was there, what an awesome and fun night!  I kinda thought "Don't Let Me Down" was boring, and never once did I think he was channeling Garcia, I did note he was using Jerry's sounds, two completely different things, and it didn't come anywhere close to a Garden show of '90, hell I wouldn't even rate it a '88 or '94 show :shifty  .  I thought the crowd's applause was more because the two cheesy guys just joined together and played a Beatles song and not so much for how they played the song.  Gary Clark and Buddy Guy totally stole the show.

I couldn't make Saturday, I was totally bumming about missing Robbie Robertson, I've never seen him, sounds like I didn't miss anything.

  4. I've never been to or worked (old soundman here) in Australia, but I will point out that here in the States it's very common for a Venue to state they have no curfews because technically they don't, but the reality usually is that the Municipality or the Union do.  So while the Venue won't stop a performance the promoter gets slapped with heavy fines by the City or ends up having to pay the Union double time or something.  While I don't know this to be the case here I'm just pointing it out.

  5. I'm guessing it's not going to be that wide open, 1 or 2 obscure covers, 1 or 2 classic covers and 1 or 2 rare Wilco related songs and the rest of the set will still be all request because I'm sure someone somewhere will request Heavy Metal Drummer.  No mater how it plays out I think it's really cool they are doing it and I'm sure it will be awesome, even if it's a Heartache Tonight or We Built This City.  Fearless would be sweet!!!

So I just opened my email to find a Ticket Master PreSale to The Eagles!!!!

  6. I think you should wait, sure you may have found a new love, but after your honeymoon is over you'll still be Jonesin' for the '69 Tele.

So, I'm about 3/4 of the way towards having enough money to get my 69 Tele Thinline reissue that I've been coveting.
But, then the shop has a used Mexi-built Jaguar that I played tonight. And I loved it. Lots of cool tone possibilities and much variety.

Plus, it's only $400 (used, in damn-near perfect condition).
Any of you have any experience with any recent-model Fender Jags from Mexico?

But I'm thinking that I want to at least wait until the 69 comes in and I get to play it before pulling the trigger on either.

    Whaddya think?

  7. Yeah, I get all that. And I really want to stay the extra night, mbut some things are out of my control unfortunately.

Don't listen to them, Sunday's are a let down, you won't miss a thing!  Welcome to the SS High, ride the wave!  And when you do get to bring your kid you'll have the time of your life.

    --- RHINO - STOP reading now.  ---

What the hell is wrong with you guys, obviously a lot of thought, energy and money went into just making these two days, let's not make them feel bad about missing a day, how about focusing on what an awesome time they'll have on the two days they are there.  Money, kids and scheduling, it's tough, believe me I know, I'm missing two Wilco related events this year because of that and I feel awful thinking about it.

  8. When I look at that Saturday lineup I wouldn't be surprised if they actually had more then just two acts on Joe's Field on Saturday, maybe they are moving towards a more traditional festival for Saturday?

  9. I called Matador Records & this is the slightly confusing email I got back-

"Hey! So according to the label heads, they performance dates haven't been announced yet so they could play any of the three festival days but there will only be one performance which will be announced soon. Have a great weekend!"

I assume that this means that there is only day where they doing both of their two different performances (the live soundtrack & their regular set) on just one day.

I REALLY hope that they are the Sunday headliner.  I'll post here when I find out for sure what the deal is!!

OK, I need to ask, this live soundtrack thing, are they playing to a movie projected on a screen?  If that's the case I'm not seeing it as an outdoor Sunday thing, maybe they can do the small room inside for the movie and move outside for their set.

  10. It so happens I was suffering the cash flow problem at the time of sale and still need two tix.  I sent a PM.

So it turns out that because of some personal circumstances,my wife and I can no longer attend Solid Sound this year. While we are very disappointed, we do plan to make it in the future. This year is just not turning out to be the one. I do, however, have my tickets, and am hoping to sell them to someone. I have (2) of the 3-Day Early Worm passes.

Could my fellow VCers perhaps recommend a good place to try and sell them?

  11. Some very good advice so far, I might add that you can get a decent guitar for under $500, I'm not exactly what you'd call "cheap" I have some very nice guitars in my stable (Taylor, Martin, Breedlove, Gibson).  I also have what I call a beater, it's the guitar I leave at my kids (ex-wife's) house so I have something to play while I'm there, it's a 2009 Yamaha FG700S, I picked it up for $100, very comfortable to play and sounds pretty decent too.  Some other lower cost acoustic brands you may want to look into would be Blueridge and Recording King, someone mentioned the Seagull S6, also a very good bang for your buck guitar.  Any of these guitars you will probably keep for a life time, sure you'll buy more expensive ones, but it's always good to have a decent lower priced guitar for camp fires and parties and stuff.

  12. A perfect example.

Also, I found out about that show (Toad's Place?) a couple days too late, so thanks for bringing up a painful memory. :)

Yes, the Toads show, I was there for the Replacements, I didn't really know UT, someone had told me I'd like them so I didn't hang out at Demerys next door eating pizza and drinking cheap beer before the show like I would usually do, I'm so glad I went in!

  13. Hey, to each their own. You're missing out, though. I've been floored by many unknown opening bands over the years, and more than a few have gone on to be very well known. Some, unfortunately, remain quietly brilliant, but these are the ones I tend to love the most - because they persist despite the struggle. And believe me, it is a struggle.

I once saw this band, they opened  for The Replacements, I think they called themselves Uncle Tupelo, wonder whatever happened to those guys I kinda dug them.
