  1. I sort of have a tradition with my favorite bands. I go and buy the CD at my local record store the day their new album releases. I've been doing it for 10 years or so.

You have a local record store? I think the closest record store to me is about an hour away, and that includes biggies like Borders, B&N, Walmart & Target.

  2. Record companies sometimes offer a stream to press. It would make sense because if the magazines want to make copy for a September issue they would need to hear the album now to make deadline. I bet it's out there in limited form. The album is probably being pressed at this very moment...

I don't know about streams but I know that record labels will send out marked cd's ahead of time, I have a my fair share of Neil Young water marked cds from back when I ran a bunch of mailing lists and web sites (Human Highway, Bad News Beat & Rusted Guitars).

  3. I (may have) finished tracking for the acoustic EP. Listening back to the reference mixes today and trying to figure out whether or not I am actually done, of if (what) things need to be re-done, than... what?

Release it, it's time to leave Well Enough Alone!

  4. How often, if ever, do you listen to it all the way through?

I very seldomly last through all the feedback and noise at the end. Sometimes though, if I'm in the right mood, I'll just let it play.

Always, I've never skipped through it, I find it very relaxing and mesmerizing, and there is always something new in there.

  5. okay, i got the four new roadcase shows uploaded, finally. everything's in CBR 256kbps mp3, and should be correctly tagged and all that jazz. they're all available in my mediafire folder, here, along with four of the older roadcase shows, in case you don't already have those. mediafire is by far my favorite uploading service, but unfortunately, you have to download each track separately, as they don't allow large (+200MB files) without a paid account. i tried zipping up each of the shows into one file, but all but the tweedy one was over 200MB. i tagged and tracked these shows really quickly last week because i'm sort-of buried in work right now, so if there are any mistakes, let me know and i'll re-up a corrected version of the offending song(s). enjoy!

Thank you for this, I took for granted they would always be there, great for work listening, now thanks to your work I'll just put them on my iPod, listening to Tipitina's right now!

  6. It's amazing how many people are willing to shell out cash for the same music on multiple formats. I know people are audiophiles, superfans or apologists, but really? I'm trying to remember the last time I bought a copy of an album I already own on another format just so I could have that other format. Oh, right, the last time that happened was never. I just don't get it. But whatever.

I mean no offense, but how old are you? I know I've purchased many cds that I owned on LP for years, LPs get scratchy and just need to be replaced sometimes.

As a side note I prefer cds to LPs, I went to school for audio, I actually have a degree in multi track recording, one of my favorite classes was mastering, I actually made the groove that goes in the vinyl, it's a VERY imperfect medium. I don't get the whole "audiophile" lp thing honestly, it's hardly "pure audio", how could it be when the signal is manipulated to fit onto the disc, and then manipulated for playback (RIAA curve). I find it humorous when a "audiophile geek" puts down MP3s for basically the same thing.

Full disclosure: I do own a B&O turntable with a cartridge that cost $400 (in 1989), not high end I know, but certainly not low end, it's just not currently hooked up.

  7. So a couple of years ago I started this thread.

The timing was unfortunate as it was right around the time word of Jay Bennett's death was announced. I knew nothing about his death when I started the thread, but it was declared insensitive timing and locked. Here was the original post if anyone wants to discuss now.

I imagine there's been a thread like this before, but the poll about O'Rourke/Sansone got me thinking... Use your own criteria. Here's mine:

    Jeff Tweedy

    Jay Bennett

    John Sirratt

    Glenn Kotche

    Nels Cline

    Jim O'Rourke

    Mikael Jorgenson

    Ken Coomer

    Leroy Bach

    Max Johnston

    Pat Sansone

Looking back, I'd move O'Rourke above Nels and maybe equal to Kotche.

While I'm not going to get into this, I don't really know that I'd consider Jim O'Rourke a "member" of Wilco, and if you do then surely you need to add Brian Hennerman to your list, and regardless you forgot Bob Egan who undoubtedly was in fact a member of the band for several years.
