  1. I've heard the name kicked around here some, but have never heard a note of their music. I may have to try to catch them the next time they play a hometown gig, since I just moved back to Cbus. Always nice to see a local band do good--especially cuz there historically haven't been all that many out of Columbus. (last good one I can think of was the New Bomb Turks when I was at OSU in the 90s)
  2. She's not exactly wrong. People keep bringing up how many of the songs have the feel of being sketches that open themselves up to further jamming/improv in a live setting. That is pretty much the unwritten code of jam-world. How 'bout it Wilco-nation? You assimilated the krautrock. Now can you dig the patchouli?
  3. All songs have been swapped in favor of techno remixes.
  4. I think if you do a quick intro-scan of each song on the album it sounds pretty downtempo, but Wilco's new thing seems to be building up to a "rock-out" section in the middle of songs. Quite a few of these songs I find myself cranking up loud in the car (Seeds/Face/Walken/Shake). I think the interesting thing is that all of these songs I can see going in two possible directions in a live setting--they could just as easily get amped up into full-blown "rockers" as they could be stripped down for a solo-acoustic show, so it would be kind of neat to hear how these things might mutate.
  5. For some reason the lyrics still come off sounding to me like Pavement minus the wit.
  6. "Shake It Off" is rapidly growing on me. When I initially heard the live versions, I didn't like them at all. But for some reason this is becoming one of the go-to tracks on the record for me. (along with Your Face, Seeds, Hate It Here, Walken) The quieter tracks haven't gotten as much frequent-repeat love from me yet, but maybe that's because I've done most of my listening so far in the car.
  7. Fear not, poortranslator, I think you'll be ok. To some extent, you just described me when I was your age, and I turned out ok. To this day, still 0% of my friends listen to Wilco (including my wife and kids). Which is, in some ways, actually kind of cool cuz I still get to think of them kind of as "my" band that nobody knows about.(until I try to get tickets, and then its a rude awakening) It doesn't have to be alienating unless you use it as a refuge to avoid other kinds of contact...but that line of thought just leads me into a bunch of psychobabble that would probably all be incor
  8. This sounds dangerous. Water & electricity don't mix, kids.
  9. Those other guys are mere pretenders to the throne.
  10. Seeing other people being optimistic about their team's chances of improvement makes me wish my favorite team wasn't owned by evil incarnate.
  11. Just roll with it, man. Everything's gonna be ok.
  12. Many of the songs on this record give the feel that they could be greatly expanded in a live setting...which I would welcome. But there is nothing about this song that makes me think "Gee, I wish this took up a quarter of the album's running time!" Although I do kind of feel that way about the middle section of "You Are My Face".
  13. Who talks about YHF anymore? Besides us, I mean? At this point it just seems kind of silly to speculate on how history is going to view Wilco. Why does it matter? For the record, I like both bands, tho.
  14. Probably until I was old enough to buy clothes for myself, I didn't realize they sold clothes anywhere but JCPenney's (and sometimes Sears, but even back then I knew that wasn't cool). Anyway, I dunno that we need to turn this into a dad-rock confessional booth or anything, but what the hell, I'll toss in my two cents. I'll agree that while I'm still open to new and challenging sounds, its true that music occupies a much less mythic place for me anymore. I don't really get absorbed by music the way I once did, although maybe that's healthier. Who knows? But music, for better or for wors
  15. I guess I was exaggerating there. The Matos thing is really an inside-joke with one of my buddies who began making fun of me relentlessly the year the O's had their big fire-sale of all their veterans and brought up a bunch of rookies mid-season. In his first couple games, Matos was flying all over the outfield (couldn't hit for shit, but he could run) and so he became my de-facto favorite player and I would constantly joke that I had to hurry up and buy the jersey before he got cut. (as it happens, I was too late) Anyway, yeah, the O's should actually be somewhat stronger this year and
  16. Strive for mediocrity, boys. I feel your pain and I wish I could remember which year it was that I finally gave up hope that this was the year they'd turn it around. I don't really feel that anymore, although I do think they'll be at least somewhat improved this year.(and would love to be happily surprised by an actual good year) We're about at the decade point now. So far my favorite O's player of the '00s is......ummm....uhhhh.....Luis Matos?
  17. Wait a minute, I'm confused which side of the high school fence we're on. As members of an indie rock band's unofficial message board, aren't we the kids who played D&D and ate boogers? Aren't we? I mean....uhh......yeah, me either.
  18. I'd like to think the AGIB songs will all stick around, but will rotate in and out of the setlist since I can't put my finger on only a couple solid "go-to" songs. Of course, I feel that way about all of the albums, so who knows? I see Handshake Drugs and Muzzle of Bees sticking around for the long haul, with the occasional ALTWYS, Spiders, and Theologians thrown in.
  19. I laugh every time I see this band's name. I'm not going to bother doing a search or anything, but I made a post a long time ago--I think it was one of the times Wilco was in NY to do Letterman or something and somebody asked about the likelihood of Wilco performing somewhere in the city that night, possibly under a pseudonym. I scanned the listings for that night and said something like: "I dunno, there's a band called Fall Out Boy playing--that's so cheesy it HAS to be a pseudonym!"
  20. This is how I read this statement when I was skimming this thread.
  21. I, for one, am thoroughly exhausted from the "Jesus, Etc" mosh pit.
  22. Them's some nice thoughts there, UW. I downloaded last night and just finished my first go-through, as well, listening to the first 6 or so songs in the car on the drive to work and then the second half of the album on headphones once I was here. Truthfully, from that limited exposure, I vastly prefer the first half of the album...but maybe I was only half tuned-in once it became background music for me at work. I think you're on the money, in some regards, as far as influences...tho I'd shy away from guessing where this band will go next since they've always been pretty intent on changing
  23. See, that doesn't even make sense to hit the skip button on the last song on an album. Not to mention that skipping Dreamer In My Dreams is just crazy. I'm going to assume that you meant that you were skipping to it, not past it. This part made me laugh, cuz I thought the same thing the first time I heard a live version of the song.
