I haven't heard of Xeni Jardin, am I completely out of it?
  2. Is this "awesome" word you guys are using synonymous with awful? If so, I'm in agreement.
  3. It's so: http://rcrdlbl.com/artists/The_Hood_Internet/track/Superbowl_Jesus_Kanye_West__1985_Chicago_Bears_vs_Wilco Kanye, Jesus, etc. and the Superbowl Shuffle. A horrible, horrible idea.
  4. Bridges was interviewed last night by a Good Morning America correspondent who asked him what he would say to his father. He completely broke down into tears and said "I've got the baton, Dad!" The interviewer woman broke down, too, and gave him a hug. It was really pretty moving.
  5. Yeah, he seemed to be annoyed, but I thought it was a put-on. Who knows, though.
  6. It's the most read story on Pitchfork right now:
  7. That Brain Damage movie reminded me to mention this, a funny, bloody romp:
  8. Because it's kind of hard for a book written in 1987 to rip off a movie that was written and shot in the '00s: http://www.amazon.com/Crazy-Heart-Thomas-Cobb/dp/0060158034
  9. I actually thought most everything that won tonight was pretty deserving. There wasn't a hell of a lot of ego-tripping tonight, the Best Actor was as low key of a guy as Hollywood has ever produced, the Best Picture winner was barely able to get made, financed, produced and distributed, the Best Director was a woman for the first time in history, and Cameron didn't have a chance to repeat his "King of the World" speech. I agreed that Tarantino should have won for the Inglourious Basterds screenplay, which was brilliant, but I'm willing to let that one slide. The ceremony itself, Martin and B
  10. That's pretty amazing, too. I don't think it had the desired effect, though: "Love Story: Genuine real life love story of a journey through time as he gave his all. Entirely filmed, produced, and directed by the person you see and him alone over the course of nine months. Just a note: From what I know she has seen this though I haven't heard from her so I only hope she is happy and living her dreams."

  12. I really love this song, too. There's nothing else in Wilco's catalog that quite has this vibe. Couldn't even describe that vibe if I tried, but "cold, glassy beauty" comes to mind, like an ice sculpture. Mike J's piano lines are quite nice, too.
  13. Crazy first period, caught it on TV with some friends at a local bar: First Period--1, Chicago, Ladd 12 (Byfuglien, Hendry), 3:48. 2, Chicago, Keith 12 (Toews, Sharp), 10:22 (pp). 3, Chicago, Brouwer 19 (Hjalmarsson, Hossa), 10:53. 4, Vancouver, Kesler 19 (Demitra), 14:09. 5, Chicago, Versteeg 14, 15:08. 6, Chicago, Hendry 1 (Toews, Kane), 19:17. Penalties--Kesler, Van (roughing), :37; O'Brien, Van (roughing), :37; Burrows, Van (roughing, slashing), :37; Ladd, Chi (roughing), :37; Byfuglien, Chi (roughing), :37; Brouwer, Chi (interference), 4:14; Bolland, Chi (roughing), 4:38; Glass, Van (hi
  14. It usually comes off as a fine whine, not too dry, with a delicate bouquet and a hint of of strawberries.
  15. Cheeses, Etc. is great. I envision a grilled cheese sandwich with 7 different cheeses, two thick slices of bread and lots of butter, lightly fried on either side.
  16. It's okay... maybe the food is great. I personally am not a fan of really dry bread though. Makes me gag just thinking about it.
  17. Two people actually - one who posted the original post and one in the comments section.
  18. People aren't wild about the food: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/665696
  19. I'm using a pretty broad definition. Empire of the Sun, for example, is underrated because it didn't win any Oscars (0 for 6), and Spielberg's made movies that were far more successful and have won far more awards. So by those standards, it's underrated. Basically movies that go here are ones that people think are pretty great, but don't often get touted as such. They can be movies that were theatrically released, too. Sorry Crow, them's the breaks.
  20. Yeah, there's definitely an element of that. I thought it was so far removed from a lot of the popcorn fare that it was fresh in its own right, and the discussions were interesting while not exactly blowing my mind - more along the lines "this is exactly the sorts of conversations people have, and it feels very real to me because of that..." Definitely not paced like a popcorn flick, though, that's for sure.
  21. I had never gotten around to seeing this but now I'm definitely interested in checking it out. I loved Linklater's earlier experiments with animation / rotoscoping in this:
  22. I'd wager Weezer / Rivers Cuomo has them beat by a mile. I mean he straight-faced played a song with Kenny G, for chrissake. That and an album named Raditude with this on the cover: Arguably the whole last 14 years of his / their career have been one huge WTF.
  23. Since VC is morphing into a film discussion forum (at least this week), I thought this would be a fun topic. I've always loved this movie:
  24. I saw a rather long uninterrupted shot from this, I believe it was a WWI battle scene of some variety. I can't remember if a beach was involved though. It was a pretty scene but it didn't make me want to see the movie.
