  1. Do you think Cosby is a jerk?

Would it be safe to assume that Trump is?

Can we not judge public figures by their record?

Bill Cosby is completely different. We're talking about a respected jurist who served 30 years on the nation's highest court. Not a serial rapist.

I don't think it would be safe to assume that about Trump. He has certainly articulated some abhorrent views, but I think it's a step beyond to reduce that person to only those views.

  2. I would like to think that internet postings, especially on this board where the conversations tend to be pretty intelligent and respectful, would not form the basis of anyone's opinion of anyone else. I fail to see the benefit of going around thinking people you've never met are dicks, jerks, or assholes.

As for Scalia, his blind spot and seeming contempt for LGBT issues have always been troubling to reconcile with the fact that I respect him and admire him as a justice. Of course, I have to reconcile those same things when it comes to some family members and close friends. I don't think he was racist, which is an extremely loaded and harmful term to use towards someone based on oral argument comments that came from a study contained in a submitted brief in the case. Part of oral arguments is to draw out important critiques and defenses of theories of a case. He also authored many opinions protecting criminal defendants regarding the 4th and 6th Amendments...illegal searches, the Confrontation Clause, etc.

I hate to see anyone painted with such a broad brush, which merely overlooks the good and not-so-good of anyone's public career.

  3. Understood, but it seems like there is an aversion to pointing out the man's many faults just because he died.  He was a giant asshole while alive.   I disagreed with him on almost every stance he took.  Am I glad he is dead, no, of course not.  I do not take glee in anyone's death.  But I will not shed a tear for him either.  The question remains do we have to treat him with kit gloves and not remember for who he was and what he did.  His record stands, his actions stand on their merit.  I suspect we have very different views and attitudes towards Justice Scalia.  But just because he is dead doesn't mean I have to forget what a giant jerk he was and doesn't mean I don't get to call him whatever name I see fit.

You knew him? Wow. Because from all accounts of those who did know him, he seemed to be a pretty good guy. Even those who were diametrically opposed to him on many issues. Of course, it's easy to reduce someone to just his worst qualities in order to aid in your lack of empathy. Not to mention the fact that he was one of the most influential and important Supreme Court justices of the last 50 years.

Dancing on anyone's grave is grotesque.

  4. He shall have Power...; and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint...Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States....

In other words, he is given the power to nominate someone, and then--only with the Advice and Consent of the Senate (confirmation)--he is able to appoint.

  5. And by the way - the president appoints (not nominates) members of the Supreme Court, so while the Senate gets to advise and consent on this stuff it is up to the president to make the decision. Of course nothing is simple any more.

Actually, the whole appointment process involves the president's nomination of an individual and the Senate's confirmation of that nominee.

  6. I mentioned this before, but I do think either Clinton or Sanders will beat any GOP candidate out there.  But which do thing will have a better chance of being able to govern?  Bernie's policies are great and all, but are they realistic with this congress and in this political climate?  Is Clinton more or less likely?

I do think if Sanders is the nominee he will bring in new / young voters, who did not vote in 2014, which might have the possibility changing congress.  I don't think Clinton will bring in many young people, as they will be disillusioned with a Sanders' loss.

I don't think you should underestimate Rubio. His biggest hurdle is actually getting the nomination. But if he does, I think he has a real chance of defeating either Clinton or Sanders.

  7. I love Sculpin, but I actually prefer Grunion. At $10, I would keep it consistently stocked. I think Ballast Point is probably the best nationwide brewery. As long as the quality doesn't dip, there's no reason not to buy its beer. Same for Lagunitas.

Although, I buy more Texas beer than anything. And with Live Oak and Blue Owl starting to can, I'm going to have to start making monthly pilgrimages to Austin (and pick up Jester King and Beerworks while I'm there).

  8. I watched Jurassic World last night and good gravy, if that's why they hired Tom Tomorrow or whatever his name is to direct, then Episode IX is going to be the ultimate SW fan fiction orgasm to end the trilogy. Which makes sense, because that means VIII, with the edgy choice of Rian Johnson at the helm, will mirror/ape Episode V.

Rian Johnson is writing Episode IX too. Or at least the story.

  9. perfect.

Been trying to get good at the art myself. Brisket is too hard, so far, for me (and expensive). I'm good at pork shoulder and ribs.

I have been using a Weber Smokey Mountain. It's an old one that I inherited, and I should probably seal it a little better. I have a little doohickey with a thermometer and fan attached to it that stokes the coals to keep the temp constant. Seems to work well.

I like a healthy amount of brown sugar in my rub for the sweet bark it helps make.

Yeah, my preference is just for salt and pepper and the smoke to enhance the flavor of the brisket, but I'm not diametrically opposed to other flavors sneaking in there. I still haven't gotten a smoker yet, but I feel I'm going to go through a ton of brisket whenever I do. It's not easy, which makes the appreciation for great brisket that much greater.

  10. Huh, I was always under the (mistaken?) impression that Texans spurred BBQ sauce, and were all about the rub.

Not mistaken. Great (and properly smoked) barbecue does not need sauce. And as far as a rub, all you need is a lot of salt and a lot of pepper.

(Edit: Finally something worth talking about.)

  11. That is exactly what I am looking for.  There needs to be calls for him to step down.  He is unfit for office and he is an embarrassment to the Republican party and this nation.  If there was someone like him on the Dem side I would be disgusted to associate with that party.  He and needs to realize that we as a country his lies and rhetoric have no place in this country.  Even though he only has 20 some percent (which as shown is only actually 6% of the electorate), he is the GOP front runner.  He is representing the GOP.  Right now Trump is what the GOP is to America and the rest of the world.  And right now the GOP is a bigoted, racist, liar.

Our politicians should be better.  They need to represent the best in us.  Trump right now represents the worst.

Why would the do that, because the need to have respect, respect for the political process, respect for their party and respect for people of this country.

But here is the thing, they won't.  Not because he will eventually burn out and fade away (which agreed he probably will).  It is because they are cowards.  They are cowards.  They are afraid of pissing off the segment of their party who believe in his bullshit.  They are afraid of him running as a third party candidate.  So they let him slide.  Oh sure there will be some attacks, some mentions here and there by candidates, and the media.  The comedy shows will continue to paint him as a clown.  But there will be no call for him step down which is what should happen.

I know I am tilting at windmills here.  And really my issue is not with Trump.  It is what he represents.  It is the malaise of electorate, seeing him as a joke, and not taking him seriously.  But his message is resonating, the way he runs his campaign is working.  Like I said before I am not worried about 2016, it is future elections.

I really think you're jumping the gun here. Nobody is paying attention to any of this yet. So somebody barely leading in the polls at this point means very little. If we get to the summer and he's still there, then you might have a case. Until then, it just doesn't matter. He no more represents the bulk of the Republican Party than any other candidate right now. He could even win Iowa and it wouldn't matter. The last two winners there were Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee. I just think your consternation and dismay is premature.

  12. I watched the news by default (came on after the football game) last night with my wife, and after reports on the "terrorist-tied" San Bernadino couple, a Denver nurse held hostage at gun point at a Veteran's hospital, and on a S.W.A.T. team and a large portion of the Denver Police at my son's high school due to a student with a gun report, I had to turn it off. Too  much fucked up stuff.

Yeah, a kid here in Fort Worth pulled a gun in a McDonald's parking lot and shot once in the air. He was later arrested and so was another kid who had taken the gun and hidden it inside the neighboring high school. I love guns. It's so great to have them be the defining fabric of American life.

  13. And this is not troubling?  All of his outrageous statements have stuck.  27% of the Republicans support him for president.  That is not a small number.  Also his statements have really have not met with a large push back from the other candidates.  So the take away for whomever become the nominee is that hateful, racist, bigoted rhetoric and policies are ok and will actually bolster your support.

It actually is a small number:

  14. Trump has no chance. It's going to come down to Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, with Jeb still holding on to an outside shot (thanks solely to money). Cruz can thank his lucky stars for Trump and Carson lasting this long, because now he seems less extreme next to those two. He'll probably win in Iowa. Rubio and/or Bush will do well in New Hampshire, and then the real race starts as everyone else fades away.

  15. my ranking of Neko's records:

    Fox Confessor

    Middle Cyclone

    Blacklisted

    The Tigers Have Spoken

    The Worse Things Get

--- (pretty big jump, imo ---

    Canadian Amp

    Furnace Room Lullaby

    The Virginian

The only real disagreement I would have is Furnace Room Lullaby. It might rank 3rd for me. It also has my favorite song of hers ("South Tacoma Way").
