  1. I think his new one will be great. Ask me in about a month and a half when I see him play the new stuff in concert.

I, being a HUGE Sebadoh/Lou Barlow fan, fall in the "J's music is best when played with Lou Barlow camp." Although I like Green Mind quite a bit....not so much on everything else. The way Lou plays bass in Dinosaur adds that extra umph J music. The first 3 Dino albums and their last 2 are spectacular. I think J brings the best out in Lou and Lou brings the best out in J. Win-win situation.

  2. Breaking up seems so cliche now. Why not just say "we're gonna take an extended break and then, in a decade or maybe less, we'll gouge the shit out of you for the reunion tour tickets." I guess that doesn't sound that sexy when you put it that way. I never saw them live, so I need to start a reunion tour ticket savings account.

Their music got old to me lately, but I really dug the hell out of their firste 4 albums. Recently whenever they come up on the ipod, I'll skip them 9 out of every 10 times. I guess I'm just done with them.

  3. on record store day they released this show: http://www.amazon.com/Norfolk-20-05-Iron-Wine/dp/B00275WC5C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1295479084&sr=8-1

it's really great. if you cant find it, let me know, and i'll try and help you out!

I actually bought that one on RSD and listened to for a couple of tracks and it's been buried on my CD shelves since. Are there any other shows that might be close to the DT in quality?

PS, those prices for that album are insane. I can say without a doubt that one of the local record stores have about 10 copies of it for $10.99, the same price I paid on RSD.

  4. Is this yet a new one? How is it?

Yeah, it's his latest. It is a very different album because it seems to be all over the place on his musical spectrum, which is a good thing. It's fairly Circus Devils meets his more poppy tunes. That said, it's another Robert Pollard album, you know...If you'ree a fan, pick it up; I'm sure you'll find something you like but this isn't the record you give to a new fan.

  5. I really loved his first two albums, The Sea & Rhythm EP and the Calexico EP. Those were stellar beyond reason. I traded a show with someone back in the '02 and they sent me a promo copy of his first album a few months before it was released and I was hooked by the folk-come-lo-fi aspect. His second album upped the fidelity and the songwriting again was stellar...Naked as We Came has to be one of the most gorgeous songs ever written in the history of man, in my opinion. Every time I hear it, it's like I've heard it for the first time: that wonderful, awesome feeling you get when you hear great music. Happens every single time, without fail.

I really wasn't fan of the Woman King EP and down right despised the Shepard's Dog. What was wrong with the Shepard's Dog for me is hard to pin down. I describe it as "NPR supporter paint by the numbers eclecticism." It just reeked of that, if you get my imagery.

  6. I really like their second album, Her Majesty, and I think that Picaresque is a close second...Their albums have gotten progressively boring, not worse per se, but still damned boring. Their last one was listened to once, maybe twice, before it was shelved away for an eternity of dust-gathering.

Their new one is just what the doctor ordered though: I listened to it today and love it. Really, really like it...

  7. I dunno, his lyrics just don't hit me like they used to. I am a firm believer that, so far, his best work has been with the Truckers. His first album was written/recorded when he was in DBT, so his second record was his first true solo joint. Not that it was bad, but it didn't knock my socks off either.

But, y'all are right, Streetlights is a great freaking song, but the rest of the album is just "meh" to me. That said, his bands seems to have gelled really well together and have only gotten better the 4-5 times I've seen them play.

  8. was the Soft Pack record this year? that's pretty good.

for all the massive love gushed towards the Beach House record, is it that much better than the 1st one or Devotion?

Yup, the Soft Pack record came out in february according to Allmusic. And, yes, I feel that the Beach House record is far better than their previous two.
