  1. Way back in 2005/6, Someone Else's Song played during the early hours in the Inverness (Scottish Highlands) branch of Tesco. Must have been from a compilation as no other Wilco followed. The person who played the track was no doubt sacked the following day following complaints from the other insomniac shopper who was in there.

  2. It's good news that they're using Topspin. I recently had problems with tickets for some Sigur Ros shows. On both occasions they went the extra mile and everything was sorted. I can think of other companies who probably wouldn't have helped.

  3. Nicely written as always Paul.

My exposure to Japanese concert audiences is limited to listening to live recordings. There seems to be a lack of energy in the audience but they always come across as extremely polite. I had a Bunnymen tape from the early 80's and the only noise between songs were solo shouts of, Peter, Leslie, Mac. None for Will strangely enough....

  4. Prince just played a show at SXSW, sponsored by Samsung Galaxy no less: NO CAMERA PHONES, enforced.

So if Prince can make it happen....why not Jeff (and the boys)?

All well and good but could you imagine the change in atmosphere at Wilco/JT shows if security were regularly wading through the crowds and disposing of phones etc. An announcement over the PA just before the band goes on maybe the way to go, or maybe allow photos for the first song as they do for professionals. As annoying as the camera phones are, I'm sure it's preferable to security all over everyone.

If the band were to go down the same road as Prince then I think as fans we should demand at least three costume changes per show from Jeff......

  5. Last night was just so much smoother compared to the first. Maybe down to the songs or just "Geoff" shrugging off his cobwebs. Quite a respectful audience apart from the aforementioned comments re cameras with flash and shutters. My favourite are tapers who set up there equipment in the circle and then proceed to chat, drink ice filled drinks knowing they're sitting near to another taper.

Being from the UK, attending shows in the US is a totally (todally?) different experience from an audience point of view. We're just too stiff in the UK, we never get excited about anything. Jeff could announce to a UK audience that tonight's money will donated to whatever charity or cause and he'd be more or less met with a wall of indifference. We can't even join in with Kingpin, so it was nice to be amongst a warm and enthusiastic crowd for the last two nights.

Big, big thanks also go out to Sue, Spencer, Stan & Warner for enabling me to get my bag into the venue after security wouldn't allow it. Grateful at first that I could at least place it at the merch stall with Spencer which was far more agreeable than, "leave it the local liquor store," as was suggested by the chief doorman. A final shout for the VCers I met, hung and observed with over the last 2 days.

Pennyghael loves ya! (Brit starts to loosen up a little)

  6. I enjoyed my first Tweedy solo show, would love him to play the UK solo every once in a while but a week in Chicago is preferable to a day trip to London!

I agree with a lot of the sentiments posted above but I'd rather have this than a mailed in performance/set that never changes from show to show, hello Bob Mould.....

Highlights for me were Spiders, Radio Cure, Laminated Cat and most of the covers.

Nice to meet up with other listers, some for the first time, some I'd met before in Europe.

  7. It's funny, I had never noticed the eyes blink until my 8 year old son pointed it out. Guess I never really looked at it long enough, but I was watching the recent ACL performance, and he started giggling and pointed it out.... I thought he was full of shit, but sure enough I re-winded and saw it.

The sort of father (or mother) we all dream of!

  8. I wouldn't necessarily call this a set designed for a seated audience, just your basic Wilco set. They no doubt started with Art of Almost in an attempt to get the crowd going early but to no avail. The obvious starter for a venue like the Rex was One Sunday Morning. They don't seem to have a louder rockier set on this current tour until you get to the encores.

I thought the only problem were the security guards. it took me back to the days of Hammersmith Odeon (now Apollo?) or the Birmingham NEC when you weren't allowed to move in your chair, if you did you got a torch shone in your face! What the guards do not realise (or perhaps they do?) is that their constant moving forwards and backwards in and out of rows is so distracting to all and sundry. Perhaps there should be guards allocated to guard the guards??? That'd be a laugh.....

Apart from that a good show with a good selection of songs.

  9. Agree with Bbop, well worth attending multiple shows in the same city. Not my favourite set of songs but some highlights such as I Must Be High, Candyfloss and Reservations to open. Other highlights were seeing Rising Red Lung performed from start to finish without a fight breaking out in the crowd, Bbop's reaction to Candyfloss being played. If you've ever been to a show with him and seen him excited at something you'll know what I mean, and Jeff's apparent corpsing over the first two lines of I'm Always In Love due to .............

Just to add a few more thoughts about the show...

Jeff bantered a bit more, saying that his New Year's resolution was to talk less on stage. But as he rambled on a bit longer, he realized that he broke it. Later on, and I can't remember specifically why right now, Jeff joked that Glenn was his "conscience." This seemed to crack Jeff up a little causing him to miss his cue for the first two lines of I'm always In Love

Following Jeff's dedication of I Must Be High to those old timers who were there at the beginning of Wilco. On scanning the crowd Jeff then quipped I don't see anyone so I guess they're all dead! Glenn muttered something along the lines of "you can't say that, that's bad!"

I caught a glimpse of the list after the show and I think it was a case of adding ITMWLY and The Late Greats. I don't recall seeing Standing O on the print out.

Great to meet even more VCers and maybe two new additions to the board after the show.

Next stops Paris, Zurich and home....

  10. Much better than the previous night's show in Groningen, perhaps the lack of fog in the city helped! Great to finally meet (well I've been on here for 3 months) some fellow VCers :ike ! A nice balance of songs, great that Sky Blue Sky and Theologians were included.

I liked the support Scarlet O'Hanna but obviously not as much as the children who invaded the stage at the end of her set to present her with flowers. Very weird. Perhaps we should do the same for Jeff and the boys tonight?

  11. Just back from the gig.

First thoughts are that both the band and audience were flat. As you can see the setlist was a nice blend of the usual mixed with the occasional. Jeff didn't speak until towards the end of the main set and then was quite chatty after that. I recorded the show and if it's ok will get around to posting on Dime etc.

Upwards and onwards to Brussels for the weekend.

  12. We can't complain really. Not many bands alternate the sets as much as Wilco do. We should count ourselves lucky that they don't play the same 25 songs each night, in the same order and then get excited when they miss one out!

I'm seeing the next five shows and there's a good chance they'll play upwards of 40 different songs, especially as there's two Brussels shows. I still won't be satisfied though.

I just hope they keep Spiders and Laminated Cat in and start with one of Less Than You Think or Reservations at one of the Brussels shows.
