  1. Such a great set in a great place.  Never more excited to hear IATTBYH when I did.  Danced my ass off for the duration.  Too groggy to make much sense but Spiders was insane, loved the funky Dawned on Me & Cali Stars was sublime.  On to Philly, maybe I'll have more later.

Oh yeah, Courtney absolutely killed it, I especially lost my shit for her first live New Speedway Boogie.

I spent a little time on the mountain, I spent a little time on the hill

Things went down that we don't understand, but I think in time we will.

  2. I told Paul he could take a night off tonight, since the Wilcos played in my hometown for the first time in 21 years.

For the unaware, Mountain Stage is a public radio program that broadcasts from the Capitol complex of my home state of West Virginia. Four or five acts do short sets that are edited later for broadcast. Wilco headlined and did about a 35

minute acoustic set much like their show ending hootenannies.

    Here's what we got.

1.) Misunderstood (Mike was on acoustic, John 12-string. Jeff and John did harmonies on the eight nothings.)

2.) Joke Explained (Mike played a multi-colored melodica that someone opined "looked like he was smoking a box of crayolas. John played an acoustic bass.)

3.) It's Just That Simple (John on acoustic, sublime)

4.) War on War (John got the 12-string again and Pat put down the banjo and played xylophone).

5.) I'm Always in Love (I told Paul, "I hope they play something from Summerteeth" and they delivered!)

6.) Jesus, etc. (John moved back over to bass. Pretty sure Pat was on banjo. One of the show highlights).

7.) California Stars (same setup as Jesus)

8.) A Shot in the Arm (Pat back on xylophone, John on 12-string, this song always makes me teary when they do it)

    And Finally

    9. Space Oddity (Jeff on 12-string, nailed it perfectly, sublime ending to the night).

Not a lot of banter because they were trying to fit as much music in as possible. Jeff, Glenn on his small drum kit, and Nels on dobro came back out with the Mountain Stage house band and a few of the acts for the closing song Wade in the Water.

Nice to hear a great report from a VC "old-timer". Glad you got them to finally come to you!

  3. Gonna pain me to skip 2 in my neighborhood but I really couldn't afford to take this weekend off. Thankfully got to 3 already to lessen the blow ;).

Enjoy!!! They are seriously on fire. I've been bouncing around all day from last night's festivities.

    Too Far Apart!!!

  4. That was us. One of my best friends, Steve (the guy who turned me on to UT and Wilco and introduced me to my wife) tragically lost his 18 year-old son this past July. His name is Ryland Ward. It was the first time that our families were together since Ry's passing; I had emailed a request to the good people at dBpm and it was forwarded to the band, who graciously dedicated the song to him. We all had a good cry and sang badly and loved the sonic cleansing of live Wilco - just the tonic. It was beautiful, we can't thank Jeff and the guys enough.

Such a touching story, thanks for sharing. Glad I could witness that.

Think that's right. Does HD>AoA count? I was flying high already.

Spiders cut. Sorry for my friends, but I made last train to Grand Central without missing a Hootenanny note.

Loved the venue, standing on a GA floor with sing-a-longs from "I was chewin gum" on after my VT show near-meltdown was sublime.

They had me at "HEY, WAKE UP"

  6. Great recap as always, agree with everything. When You Wake Up Feeling Old a super treat.

So, I flew in from NYC to meet up with family in the balcony. Oh, the balcony. Anyone that stood up there was asked to stand in the back. I believe I started jumping a bit during Ramdom Name Generator from the back & was told I couldn't dance at all in the balcony. Ended up on the side of the floor for much of the show, periodically running up to say hi to the fam.

Quite comical all around. Felt like I was in Footloose
