  1. BTW in the past 17 times justices have been confirmed during the last year of a presidents term.

It's actually very rare. I read that the only time a justice was confirmed by a senate with an opposing party majority in an election year was the Democratic-majority senate which confirmed Reagan's choice of Anthony Kennedy.

Partisan politics are alive and well.

  2. ^^^ And I hope you're the only person to say it.  Regardless of whether you agreed with hiis opinions, the man was a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and doesn't serve to be called a POS.

The level of vitriol on forums that I frequent is off the charts, and I know many of the people personally. I could never get that worked up over politics. Sadly, every one of the celebrators consider themselves open-minded and a good number of them prefaced their cheers with "I'm not the kind of person to celebrate another person's death, but..."

We should all remember that these are men and women appointed for life, not career politicians who talk out of both sides of their mouths in search of the presidency and the hundreds of millions in speaking fees and book advances that go with it.

  3. Overheard an amusing exchange just before the band came on....smell of weed starts wafting through the air and a woman a couple of rows behind us starting taking issue with it, starts glaring around and stating loudly to her husband, "I am not OK with this!"  Moments later I see her taking with the ushers who were looking at her with puzzled faces.  After the show she happens to be right in front of us of her way to the car.  Again I overhear her complaining about the smell and she says, "that was uncalled for, I mean it's 2015, do people really need to be smoking marijuana at a rock concert?"  Hilarious.

Was it an indoor venue with a no smoking policy? If so, she had every right to complain. If a venue won't allow people to smoke cigarettes they shouldn't make an exception for weed.

  4. Hosting a party? Going to a party? Don't give a hoot about football?

My neighborhood always has a big shindig at someone's house. Last year I won $200 in the pool and the year before a neighboring house burned to the ground after a chimney fire. What will today bring?

I'm heading to the kitchen to start baking 4 loaves of bread that will be transformed into muffulettas by gametime. Gluttony is my middle name.

  5. Military members deploy to serve for our country, not against it.  I'm surprised that has to be explained.

I'm surprised that "Right or wrong, there are causes which some people find worthy of defending" needs to be explained.

Most causes are not worthy of violence, almost all of them.  You're no better than a jihadi if you're so self-important that you think your personal beliefs entitle you to take up arms against other citizens.

As far as I'm aware, there's not yet been any evidence that the dead man committed any violence. We should wait until video evidence is provided before we can pin that on him.

And as far as I'm concerned, jihadis fall under my "Right or wrong, there are causes which some people find worthy of defending" banner. I wouldn't occupy a federal building because I was having a grazing dispute with the BLM, nor would I burn down an abortion clinic or pound metal spikes into trees in a lumber forest, but I understand why some people do. The only point I'm trying to make is that such people aren't abandoning their families, they're risking their lives for a cause they have deemed worthy.

  6. It has been reported that he stated when the authorities stopped them that he uttered some version of "I'd rather be dead than live in jail".

As far as I've read, that seems to be a statement that he made during a CNN interview earlier this month. Regarding yesterday's shooting, the circumstances have not yet been revealed. An anonymous official told CNN that the 2 men who were shot didn't comply with orders to surrender, but it's unclear if the men fired any shots and if they did, who fired first. I assume video footage will eventually be released. Maybe the men fired first or maybe the FBI fired because they raised their weapons. Video should answer the questions.

But really he needs to be viewed as a person who abandoned his 11 children and his wife.

Is that how soldiers, sailors and Marines should be viewed when they deploy? Right or wrong, there are causes which some people find worthy of defending.

  7. Never seen them, but I used to see Derek a lot when he was a little kid.

Same here. He used to play at a small chicken wing restaurant/bar in my hometown in Florida when he was in his early teens. He had to leave the bar when he wasn't performing because he was underage, so he'd just skateboard in the parking lot between sets.

  8. That's a good one, though it's not Evangelista. It's Carla Bozulich with the Nels Cline Singers backing her up. None of the Singers are in Evangelista, as far as I know. Regardless, good call on that one!

Carla Bozulich – “Red Headed Stranger” – 2 x LP

A re-issue of Carla’s 2003 cover of the Willie Nelson album of the same name for the first time on vinyl. It also includes a bonus song by Carla not found on the original album. This album includes an incredible line-up, including: Nels Cline, Devin Hoff, and even Willie Nelson himself. Limited to a pressing of 500 copies on black vinyl. Release date TBA.

  9. Funny that the one instant reaction they all have to the pulled pork is that they think it might be undercooked.

The pink smoke ring freaks out a lot of Americans, too, if they're unfamiliar with smoked meats.

The world seems to be getting smaller as far as food and drink go. On my first trip to the UK in 2001 I had the most dire burrito imaginable and everyone was drinking Budweiser. On my last visit I saw some legit Mexican and BBQ places in London and American craft beer was everywhere.

  10. Iran and the US are exchanging prisoners. 5 americans freed from Iranian jails and 7 Iranians freed. //snark on Another failure of the Obama administration. We should have bombed them into submission a long time ago. its the only diplomacy that works. //snark off.

No, their release should have been a contingency of the recent nuclear deal.

One of the released prisoners is a close friend of one of my best friends.

  11. Russia is gobbling up territory and trying to rebuild the USSR while reigniting the Cold War, China is building offensive military bases in contested waters and threatening its neighbors, Iran is on its way to building nuclear weapons while threatening the US and Israel, North Korea just tested a nuclear weapon, ISIS controls large swathes of Iraq and Syria, Libya is a disaster, the EU is crumbling, we're losing the war in Afghanistan, Europe is in the middle of a refugee crisis, etc.

  12. So, I work for the big beer company that just bought Ballast Point for a cool $1B. I'm curious if that that make their beers less appealing to you all. I hadn't tried a lot of Ballast Point prior to the purchase and am enjoying the offerings a lot. The price point is pretty aggressive!

Sculpin is good, but at the $15-$16 price they charge here in Texas, I'll pass in favor of other local IPAs. I greatly prefer Ballast Point's Grunion pale ale, but until recently it was sold at the same price as Sculpin and that was a huge mistake. My neighbor and I love it, but we have both said that it should be a $10 beer. Last week they started selling it for $9.85 and at that price I'll drink a lot of it.

Mostly, I prefer to drink my own home brew. It's fresher and usually better than the craft beer sold in the stores.

  13. Is it really the best IPA ever?

It's definitely up there. It's perfectly balanced and crafted. It's hard to beat when it's fresh from the brewery.

Lately I've been drinking a very simple IPA called Yellow Rose from Lone Pint in Magnolia, Texas. Just pilsner malt and Mosaic hops, but it's a very tasty offering.

I like Ballast Point's beers, but Sculpin at $16 for a 6-pack is just too expensive when there are equally good IPAs available for $10. I'm an even bigger fan of their Grunion pale ale, but stores here have been charging the same $16 for 6 cans. I was happy to see that the price has dropped to the $9.85 mark as of a few days ago. At that price I'm gonna drink a lot of it.
