  1. What qualifies as vintage in the mechanical pencil market?  I have a Spongebob Squarepants mechanical pencil, and a Cross pencil I got as a high school graduation gift in 1991.  Do either of those count?

I'll go for anything interesting (souvenir or cool advertising, calendar pencils, floaty pencils) usually mid-1960s or earlier. I went a little nuts with it a couple of years ago so I probably have 600+ pencils; at some point I need to thin the herd a bit.

  2. We're in a holding pattern until we get the all-clear to head back to Savannah after emergency crews clear the roads of downed trees and power lines and re-inspect all the bridges. What video we've seen today of our area (Wilmington Island, east of Savannah) shows tons of uprooted trees & torn up power lines (I imagine the power will be out for days) but fortunately not much storm surge flooding. We won't know anything about our house until they let us back on the island.

  3. I remember going into downtown Baltimore with my mother and our next-door neighbor (our neighbor had broken his leg when he fell off the back of a truck at work and my mom was driving him to his doctor's appointment to get his cast off) and seeing armed soldiers standing on the street corners. This was right after MLK was assassinated & the national guard had been called up to quell any potential rioting in the city. I was 4. I also remember watching RFK's funeral on TV a few months later.

  4. The thing about the Democratic Caucuses is that in each candidate, a candidate has to be "viable" to receive votes. That means if they don't have 15% of the room, then their supporters have to move to another candidate. I tend to think more O'Malley supporters will break for Sanders than for Clinton.  O'Malley's numbers suggest that he won't be viable in most precincts. Could be good news for Sanders.

The Republicans just vote on a ballot, no viability or anything. Trumps numbers seem to be back on the way up, but it will be interesting to see if people actually vote for him in the numbers he's polling. Evangelicals turn out in Iowa, that might give the edge to Cruz.

I'll be caucusing. I always welcome the insanity, but am glad when it's over.

This caucus thing sounds like a political version of red rover red rover. That said, I would caucus for purple monkey tits.

  5. Because I liked to help my father clear brush and trees from our property and was too small to wield an axe, my parents got me a kid-sized hatchet for my 7th birthday. One day not long after I was hacking away at a fallen tree limb with my new hatchet, but was barely making a dent in the limb. I figured the hatchet must be dull so I ran my thumb over the blade to see if it was sharp or not. Yep. Pretty sharp.
