  1. I feel like this band would be in my wheel house. I love the Wynn side projects (e.g. Gutterball and The Baseball Project), but have never heard any Dream Syndicate. Where should I start? Days of Wine & Roses?

Yes, that's the best place to start. They only put out 4 records in the 80s & had one a few years ago. Plus, they put out a legendary live album: Live At Raji's.

Here's another Steve Wynn side project: Steve Wynn & The Miracle 3.

  2. Loved Stan & Ollie. Saw it a week ago. Thought it was perfectly cast. It was also really about trying to avoid being obsolete.

I'll be back with my True Detective thoughts. Just wanted to remind some folks that this Sunday's episode is already on HBO Go/HBO Now because of the Super Bowl.

  3. Found this on YouTube, says 2005. The clothes are the same as in the photos on the acltv link. Starts off with ALTWYS.

Yeah. It looks like they snuck in some pics from their 2004 taping which only aired as a half hour split episode with another band that escapes me at the moment. The 1999 show I can't find anywhere online. The 2012 show I still have saved on my DVR.

Edit: OK. It looks like the ACL link has pics from all of the shows except for 1999.

  4. last Sunday i went to the Coolidge Corner event where they screened the original, and Claudio Simonettt's Goblin provided the live score. pretty cool! Goblin played a bunch of songs afterwards too.

That's awesome! Those Italians knew how to manipulate light. The original is such a colorful film and so well done. I didn't know of that event until Sunday evening. It popped up as a recommended event on FB.

  5. Are you talking about Suspiria?

Yes. I was smart to go see it right away. It only lasted a week around here (Boston area).

Amazon distributed it, so it'll be on Amazon Prime at some point next year. No idea how long the turn around is.

  6. You may want to check this book out:

Salamander: The Story of the Mormon Forgery Murders

Thanks! I looked at the Wiki entry & it sounds fascinating.

I loved The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs. It had one of the best openings that I've ever seen. Classic Coen Bros. I'll admit that it did try my patience a bit in the middle, but I enjoyed each vignette which were quite different from one to the next. I need to rewatch the ending to get a clearer grasp on the message of it. It all seemed fresh & you'll need to tune into their unique frequency to enjoy it. Now that I'm familiar with the dialog, I'll be waiting for classic lines to hear again.

  7. I walked out of The Girl In The Spider's Web. While I enjoyed David Fincher's unnecessary remake in 2011, I knew that he'd never be back for any of the possible U.S. sequels. 7 years have passed and they decided to go with the 1st book in the series not written by the original author, Stieg Larsson. It was one of those boring films that feel twice as long as it actually is. I left after an hour and it really felt like I was there for 2 hours. I'd be willing to give it another chance, if it ever becomes a .99 cent rental on iTunes.

I thoroughly enjoyed Can You Ever Forgive Me?. Melissa McCarthy & Richard E. Grant make a great duo. I found the concept of forgery & there being a market for people paying for letters from dead celebrities completely fascinating in today's current climate. The film really made me question authenticity & the belief that people attach to a piece of paper that states it as such. Also, it shows how people can start to believe their own lies, even when they know that they're dealing with falsehoods.

I'm excited for the new Coen Bros. movie dropping on Netflix tomorrow, but I really want to see it in a theater. Lucky for me I have the option to do both.

  8. Some very quick bits from yesterday's U2 concert in Berlin. Bono said that "We're going away now..." which fueled speculation about the end of the band....

But fans spoke with crew members after the show & they were asked by U2 to clear their calendars for Sept-Dec 2019 for an Australian stadium tour. It sounds like it will be a completely new tour.

Anton Corbijn said that the proposed Nov date (next week) for the Joshua Tree 30th Anniversary Tour concert DVD has been postponed to March because they want it to play in select theaters.

The band also has some 360 degree filmed shows that will come to light somehow. Virtual Reality? The one off Apollo Theater show in June & the gig in Newark that same month were filmed that way.
