  1. I definitely can't order mine. I just made an initial list and it was something like 25 or 30 songs. An attempted top ten, pre-TWL.

    Misunderstood

    California Stars

At My Window Sad and Lonely

    Airline to Heaven

    Remember the Mountain Bed

    Hummingbird

    Via Chicago

    Jesus, Etc.

    Shot in the Arm

At Least That's What You Said

  2. Is there a ViaChicago room on turntable.fm? I haven't found one yet but the site is kinda buggy for me at times. Been having a blast on it for the past week or so though--with all the musical knowledge on this board I'm sure we could get a lively room going for those interested.

  3. From what I have purchased

    1. Decemberists - The King Is Dead (easy #1/this is timeless/didn't even really like this band/crazy good)

    2. Gillian Welch - The Harrow And The Harvest (great songs speak for themselves)

    3. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues (just beautiful)

    4. J Masics - Several Shades Of Why (some cool tunes here/i have a soft spot for j)

    5. Iron/Wine & The Head And The Heart - (hit and miss for both records, but I have enjoyed them)

    I'm awaiting to purchase:

    MMJ

    Vetiver - The Errant Charm

Oh crap--how did I forget J Mascis?! I've probably listened to that more than most of the other records on my list... so killer.

  4. Faves So Far:

    The Low Anthem-- Smart Flesh

Jost T. Pearson - Last of the Country Gentlemen

The Decemberists - The King Is Dead

    Centro-matic - Candidate Waltz/Will Johnson - Little Raider EP

Charles Bradley - No Time for Dreaming

Gillian Welch - The Harrow and the Harvest

Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring for My Halo

    Robert Ellis - Photographs

    Wye Oak - Civilian

Disappointments, which sadly include 3 of my all-time favorite bands:

    Okkervil River

Iron and Wine (That "tree by the river" song kills me dead.)

Bon Iver (stunning in part, but includes "Beth/Rest")

    My Morning Jacket

  5. I'll post a review in a day or two but here's the setlist. Pretty standard for this tour.

    Ashes of American Flags

    Bull Black Nova

I Am Trying to Break Your Heart

    Pot Kettle Black

    I'll Fight

    Handshake Drugs

    One Wing

    War on War

    Shot in the Arm

At Least That's What You Said

    Via Chicago

    Jesus, Etc.

    Impossible Germany

    Airline to Heaven

    I Hate It Here

    Walken

I'm The Man That Loves You

    Wilco (The Song)

    Red-Eyed and Blue

    I Got You

    Hoodoo Voodoo

    Heavy Metal Drummer

  6. I've only listened to the album twice but so far I'm pretty bored with it. I miss the days when he used to rock out a little. Made the ballads hit harder. Also, I find Allison Moorer's stuff to be pretty forgettable, and don't really like when the two of them duet.

  7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnugSPfCRmQ

    1. Joel Alme - Waiting for the Bells

    2. The Tallest Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt

    3. Phosphorescent - Here's To Taking It Easy

    4. Cotton Jones - Tall Hours in the Glowstream

    5. Dr. Dog - Shame, Shame

    6. Justin Townes Earle - Harlem River Blues

    7. Laura Veirs - July Flame

    8. The National - High Violet

    9. Possessed By Paul James - Feed the Family

    10. Mavis Staples - You Are Not Alone

Arcade Fire, Joanna Newsom and especially the Black Keys would have all made my list if they'd just hired an editor.

  8. I think "Numbers" might be the most bizarre song Ryan has ever released, and that's really saying something. In my opinion he hasn't made a decent album since Jacksonville City Nights, and both that one and Cold Roses had a bunch of filler in between the great songs. I often wonder whether Caitlin Cary, Phil Wandescher and the rest of Whiskeytown helped him distill and edit his ideas for that band, and if Gillian Welch/David Rawlings had the same role during the Heartbreaker sessions. Ever since that album he's felt like a mess to me. He's still put out some brilliant songs, mind you, but he's spent way too much time genre-hopping.

  9. Lou we must have been at the same show, I also caught the flatlander late on saturday. Excellent set.

While I agree about their later records not being quite as good as the first one, I really enjoyed "Hills and Valleys", some excellent song writing on there. Particularly the opening three tracks.

I just watched "Lubbock Lights" a few a nights ago (its available to rent on amazon), if you like these guys the film is a must see. Really cool documentary about their home town.

As for those wondering about Butch's solo material, GRAB IT, his songwriting is lyrically dense and very rewarding. His last one "war and peace" has some great stuff on it. Not to mention the guy is one hell of artist, his pen drawings are unreal, he does these futuristic landscapes, very cool stuff.

I agree about Hills and Valleys. "After the Storm" was probably my favorite song when I saw them last Saturday in Dallas.
