  1. Just heard you guys on the new Public Radio station here in Dallas...

It's pretty crazy, actually. They've played at least 5 of our songs on there in the last three weeks. Pretty much one or two plays a day. They're playing a lot of our friends' bands on there, too--it's nice to have decent radio in Dallas again, huh?

  2. Finally got around to listening to the samples on the Sonicbids site and thought it was really excellent. I'm a sucker for any use of horns and I definitely hear some Calexico in addition to the other bands mentioned in this thread. I'll definitely be buying this. Is it best to go through CD Baby or do you sell them, too?

Keep us up to date on tour dates, I might have to drive out to Dallas for a show. :)

Thanks so much for listening. We sell them at shows but haven't set up a way to sell them over the internet ourselves yet other than CDBaby and iTunes. You can also buy them at Good Records in Dallas and Recycled Books in Denton. Are there any stores in Fort Worth we should take some to?

  3. Listened to the samples and I liked it a lot.

Sounds a lot like Songs: Ohia or The Magnolia Electric Company, with little flecks of Wilco thrown in for good measure.

I'm thinking that I'm gonna buy this sometime soon. Keep reminding me or I may forget to do so!

    Nice.

FYI, as of tonight our album is on itunes if you prefer...

    Nice.

Thanks for the listen and the kind comparisons. Any day someone hears those influences in our music is a good day.

  5. I would love to check this out, and great cover. I'm interested in where the name for the band came from? Do you tour around the country?

We do not, as of yet anyway, tour around the country. Maybe soon.

I originally thought of the name as a way to describe that point when you first fall asleep, only to awaken suddenly, feeling as if you've run into something. (I'm sure there's a medical term for this, but I have no idea what it is.) Mostly I just like the way the words sound together, and all my female friends picked it from my list of band names back when I was deciding on one...

  6. Hey Noah, I went over to check it out, but there are no samples over there at CD Baby.

You need to get some up there!

They are up there, but seem to only work intermittently. Not sure what the deal is.

You can also find us at myspace.com/thenaptimeshake and sonicbids.com/thenaptimeshake. Thanks for listening.

My friend Claire, a talented graphic designer, did our cover art. I think she pretty much knocked it out of the park.

I know this can be annoying for some of you, but I thought the 3 or 4 of you on here that know who I am might be interested in this...

My band, The Naptime Shake, released our debut album recently. It went live on CDBaby yesterday and can be found at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/NaptimeShake

There's a little Wilco and a lot of Texas in our sound--I think some of you might be into it.

And if you write about music for a blog/magazine/newspaper/etc. and might be interested in a free promo copy, hit me up.

Thanks in advance to any of you who take a little time out of your day to give it a listen.

    Cheers,

    Noah

  8. A.M.--Casino Queen > Dash 7

    Being There--Misunderstood > Someone Else's Song

Mermaid Avenue--California Stars > Hoodoo Voodoo

    Summerteeth--Via Chicago > In A Future Age

Mermaid Avenue, Vol 2--Remember the Mountain Bed > Someday Some Morning Sometime

YHF--Jesus, Etc. > Pot Kettle Black

A Ghost Is Born--Hummingbird > Less Than You Think

Sky Blue Sky--Sky Blue Sky > Leave Me (Like You Found Me)

Wilco (The Album)--One Wing > Country Disappeared

This was really hard, especially considering the fact that I find Mermaid Avenue, volume 1 and Being There to be absolutely perfect.

And "It's Just That Simple" is an awesome song. Y'all need to stop hatin'.

  9. Chutes is wildly considered the better record, and rightly so. 2 or 3 brilliant songs don't make the album as a whole.

By whom? It certainly isn't in the circles I run in. Chutes is a good album, don't get me wrong, but "Oh, Inverted World" has much cooler production. They haven't done anything that strange and beautiful since.

  10. I've had problems with this list since they started rolling it out on Monday.

First of all, how do you put Chutes Too Narrow 69 spots ahead of Oh, Inverted World? That's just crazy talk.

Okkervil River and Califone should at least be in the top 20, as should the Constantines IMO.

I'm also shocked at the lack of DBT. Even Pitchfork has reviewed many of their albums fairly well.

Funeral at #2, but no Neon Bible? I think Neon Bible is the better record, but even if they don't, it's easily in the top 200.

No Gillian Welch. That is astounding. They gave Time (The Revelator) an 8.1 when it came out.

And Kid A, while an excellent record, would not even crack my top 100.

    rabble rabble rabble.

  11. Wilco:

    My favorites: *

*11-07-1997 Trees, Dallas, TX (My girlfriend's father was picking us up after the show and I think I made him wait till after the first encore. Definitely violated her curfew. My bad. I will always remember that night's version of "Misunderstood".)

*8-14-1999 Gypsy Tea Room, Dallas, TX

    9-22-2001 Stubbs, Austin, TX

    9-27-2002 The Mercury, Austin TX

    9-28-2002 ACL Fest

8-02-2004 Eagle's Ballroom, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Lived in Chicago that summer and met some of you fine people. My only time backstage.)

*9-14-2004 The Blue Note, Columbia, Missouri

    9-19-2004 ACL Fest

    9-24-2005 Stubbs, Austin, TX

    9-25-2005 ACL Fest

*10-12-2006 Will Rogers Auditorium, Fort Worth, TX

    9-14-2007 Palladium Ballroom, Dallas, TX

    Jeff Solo:

1-20-2007 Granada, Dallas, TX (I wrote a preview in the local alt-weekly for this show and Jeff sort of dissed it on stage. Never found out if it was sarcasm 'cause he got sidetracked playing that "Band names/types of shit" game that was so popular on this tour.)

    Autumn Defense:

Hideout Party, Pok-E-Jo's BBQ, SXSW 2001

    SXSW 2003/2004?

    Jay Bennett

    Emo's, Austin, TX (circa 2001/2002)

There might be one or two I'm forgetting. I tried to get into a Wilco show at Sons of Hermann Hall in Dallas when I was 15 but it was sold out. I've regretted not getting advance tickets ever since.

  12. I first heard Wreck Your Life when I was 15 (same year I discovered Son Volt, Wilco and Slobberbone) and I caught the 97s a bunch of times in high school/college. I'd rank their albums this way...

    1. Wreck Your Life

    2. Too Far To Care

    3. Early Tracks ep

    4. Fight Songs/ Hitchhike to Rhome (tie)

    5. Satellite Rides

    6. Drag It Up

    7. Blame It On Gravity (If you thought Drag It Up sucked, try this stinker...)

Rhett went downhill as a songwriter a couple years after moving to LA if you ask me, but if you avoid his solo albums and stick to the early stuff you'll hear some great music. Murray Hammond's solo album is a thing of beauty, though...

  13. Sorry, but Kings of Leon have sucked for years now. The Southern Strokes thing they mined on Youth and Young Manhood was fun and worthwhile, but this Southern U2 bullshit is rom-com soundtrack nonsense. They never should have shaved their moustaches, either.
