  1. i agree with you uncool. the opening sequence grabbed me and kept me going for the rest of the movie. Q got screwed.

Inglourious Basterds was definitely my favorite film of the year (followed by Adventureland and Up in the Air), and maybe my favorite of all of Tarantino's films. The Hurt Locker was great but I don't think it would even make my top 5.

I finally saw Doubt this week, too, and still can't believe anyone actually thought Slumdog Millionaire was a better movie last year. Just for fun I looked at about the last 20 best picture winners today and it's amazing how poorly some of them have aged and how many were absolutely robbed--L.A. Confidential, anyone?

  2. I know I am going to get killed on here for my opinions. However, The Avett Brothers are the best thing going today. I & Love & You is a solid progresion to me. Easily some of the best lyrics out there today. Head full of doubt is an excellent song, so is Laundry Room and Ill with Want. I could only wish that Wilco is half as interesting both on cd/vinyl and live as these guys. I have no clue as why people even bother to post Wilco setlists any longer. Except for 1 or 2 songs a night it is the same old line. My last few Wilco concerts I have been able to predict almost the entire set list from reading them on Via Chicago. Simply put the last Wilco concert I attended was boring. The Avetts on the other hand, provide an energetic and diverse set list every night and for my money way more bang for the buck. I miss the days of the unpredictable Wilco sets. Sorry to disappoint or incite a riot but Wilco is by far not the most interesting recorded or live band anymore. I prefer the Avett Brothers and My Morning Jacket anyday. Still Love me some Wilco but it just isn't the same anymore. Perhaps time for Jeff to shake things up a bit? Now start throwing your stones at me.

I have tried and tried with this band. I've seen them live and bought a few albums, and while I like a few songs I just really can't understand what the big deal is. There was a great Mumford and Sons review on Pitchfork a few days back (I have not listened to that album enough to say whether I agree with the 2.1 rating, but it was extremely well-written) that mentioned them borrowing some "exaggerated earnestness on consignment from the Avett Brothers," and I think that's pretty dead on.

some of this so far is just outstanding... 2 hours worth though... that's a tough task. gonna treat 'em as 3 separate albums for this weekend at least.

Loving it so far, especially "Jackrabbits" and "Good Intentions Paving Co." Some really cool percussive textures on a lot of the songs, too.

  4. :cheers With all due respect to the bands that have come before, The Who live is one of the greatest things Rock music has ever produced.

It was a bit rough, but still more exciting than any other band that's ever played in the SB (imo).

I thought it was completely flat and awful. Then again, I don't really like the Who. But still, "more exciting" than Springsteen? "More exciting" than Prince? No way.

I nominate John Fogerty for 2011. I think he's the last classic rocker who could mount anything close to the Prince/Springsteen/U2 halftime shows, because he can actually rock.

In the meantime I'm just gonna buy up My Morning Jacket albums and hope they're big enough to do it by 2020 or so. Or maybe the Arcade Fire.

  5. I'm on this ship...still Funeral was amazing too I just prefer Neon...

Exactly. I like 'em both, but I think Neon Bible just hangs together better as a record. It probably helps that I'm a huge Springsteen fan as well.

  6. i'm guessing it's a little favor from when FOX used an un-authorized short clip of 'No Cars Go' on the Super Bowl a few years ago. they threatened lawsuit but things sorta just died off.

as for "hard to top Neon Bible"... i guess i'd have to disagree with that. I'll be sadly disappointed if they don't.

    Neon Bible > Funeral, IMHO.

  7. Get ready to start seeing alot of iPads on stage. There are alot of promising synth programs for the iPhone, but it's really hard to play on such a tiny touchscreen keyboard--the iPad will change that, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Mikael Jorgensen playing one at a Wilco show in the near future. Just a hunch.

  8. it is :/

i thought it was kinda poor too, but another friend really digs it *shrug*. they've always had kinda crappy artwork minus 'We All Belong' tho

What about the cover for Fate?! Granted, I'm biased because I only live a few miles from Clyde Barrow's grave, but still...it's a striking image.

  9. It's probably Pollard by a mile, but Will Johnson at least warrants a mention--6 Centro-matic records (and 2 or 3 EPs), 3 South San Gabriel records, 2 solo records and the Molina & Johnson record, not to mention stints behind the drum kit for Monsters of Folk, Patterson Hood and Jay Bennett and Edward Burch.
