  1. I don't think that Earl was saying any of that to argue that A-Rod won't be thought of that way, just that he shouldn't be. But yeah, reality won't change the fact that many Yankees fans completely irrational and illogical.
  2. ERA+ is basically a measure of where a pitcher ranks with the rest of the league. A pitcher with an ERA that is exactly league average will have an ERA+ of 100. A pitcher who's ERA is 50% better than league average would have an ERA+ of 150, etc. So basically, an ERA+ of 96 means that he was 4% worse than league average. It is also adjusted to reflect the park that a pitcher is pitching in (to recognize the fact that a pitcher in, say, Arizona, is going to give up more runs than one pitching in San Diego, simply because of the park that he's pitching in).
  3. It was '84. Believe it or not, the 1983 World Series was won by the Orioles.
  4. The following players never won a World Series, and therefore are terrible at baseball: Ted Williams Ernie Banks Barry Bonds Ty Cobb Ty Cobb simply was not gritty enough.
  5. Wow, doing a little research makes the point a whole lot better than a couple of sarcastic zingers. I stand by my obnoxious post anyway.
  6. I like the song in the Coke commercial.
  7. A team of A-Rods (average over his career) would score 8.03 runs/game. A team of 2007 A-Rods would score 8.69 runs/game. And none of that has anything to do with anyone else on his team, or any of the competition. You're right, Scott Brosius was much more valuable than A-Rod. A-Rod won't be earning his money until he's pitching 300 innings a year on top of everything else he does.
  8. Oh yeah, Jeter is totally just ripping off Brosius's schtick. Apologies to Mr. Brosius, he of the career OPS+ of 95. That guy was awesome.
  9. Okay, but Earl, here's thing. How do any of those things actually contribute to winning? Homeruns, doubles, put outs, getting on base...I just don't see how any of those things contribute to the team. The way to win is not by scoring "runs" or by preventing the other team from scoring "runs". It's by being gritty and having a sparkle in your eye. See: Jeter, Derek.
  10. Yeah, A-Rod has been distracting his team from winning by going out of his way to help his team win. Also, by injuring Jason Giambi, and by making Roger Clemens poop his pants.
  11. A-Rod plays thirdbase. If the Jays really want to avenge this travesty of justice, then they should just pull the same move on him. Over the course of, what, 16 games?, I'd have to think that at some point someone will hit a pop up to third with a runner on second base.
  12. What makes you so sure? Just curious.
  13. I don't think I can defend his tirade, but I don't blame him for being upset. Should he be happy that shitty quality rips are circulating? The guy put a lot of work into getting the album to sound a certain way.
  14. I was under the impression that those advance copies are usually sent with some sort of official agreement in place that laid out what it was to be used for. I may be wrong.
  15. I have to think that radio stations are going to need to stop doing stuff like this if they want to continue to get advances of records. I mean, it just seems logical.
  16. I meant to refer to the crop of young stars, but yeah, I didn't say that. Why can't you just read my mind? But yeah, Kobe's probably the best player in the game (for another year or two before Lebron overtakes him).
  17. Gregg better keep the closing job or else there's going to be hell to pay. This comment is probably better suited for the fantasy baseball board, but I don't feel like scrolling through who knows how many pages to find it.
  18. Yeah, a great center is more valuable than a great forward of equal talent, but I think Lebron's talent exceeds everyone's by a wide enough margin that it would be difficult to pick anyone else to build a team around, given the choice.
  19. Lebron makes me cry. Also, I'm still angry that McDyess got ejected.
  20. This game just might kill me.
  21. Hey, what were we saying about citing sources? Give Dusty Baker his due.
  22. I agree. The Yankees are scoring way too many runs as a team. The one thing that they really need to win more games is a minor league outfielder who won't keep getting on base the way that pesky Giambi does to bring those run totals down. And hey, maybe one of them can pitch a few innings too.
  23. Would make more sense for Iggy to be L'il God, since Iggy is God and all.
