  1. *Journalist-type Dutchman signing in*

Not too long ago, we Europeans could only dream of seeing Jeff solo. Sure, there was the incidental show in England or Germany, but I never made it to one of them. Fortunately things have changed, so after Edinburgh in January, the Utrecht show was my second Tweedy solo show in 2018 - a luxury even in years of extensive Wilco-touring. Since bböp was taking notes next to me, there's not much else to say about the show except for some personal views.

First of all, contrary to the new Ronda hall in Tivoli Vredenburg, the Grote Zaal was part of the old Vredenburg venue (built in the late 70s), which was mainly used for classical concerts. It's a great setting for an intimate acoustic show, but it also mainly attracts elderly visitors (another reason could be that Wilco only gains media attention from a few Dutch "quality" newspapers instead of magazines and radio stations who target younger people).

I love the new songs, they're quite retrospective and philosophical and they fit right into the theme of what I expect to be the content of Tweedy's autobiography. Other personal highlights included Impossible Germany (with some additional "If this is what love is for..." lines at the end, absolutely beautiful), Born Alone (my favorite Wilco song of recent years) and New Madrid. Bull Black Nova, however, is one of a few songs that in my humble opinion just doesn't work in an acoustic setting. Finally, I'm still wondering why the fuck Dutch audiences _always_ contain at least one drunkenly yelling American woman. One could feel the waves of awkwardness rolling through the venue when she opened her mouth.

Near the end of the show, JT invited all of us to meet again in Utrecht on Election Night 2020. I can only hope he returns sooner than that (preferably with band; solo shows are great but as 2018 moves forward, I'm really starting to miss the band). And if that's the case, you're all invited for Belgian beers and burgers. Bböp knows the address.

  2. Is it just me, or is there a pretty loud click in Misunderstood, around the 1:22 mark? Almost sounds like a mouse click. It's there on the regular remastered CD and on the 24-bit FLAC. My original Being There CD is at my parents' house, so I can't check if it appears on the old version, but I never noticed it before and it's driving me mad!

  3. For the record, that's translated from Dutch so I'm assuming it means 15 previous unreleased demos. Because marketing something as previously released isn't great sale incentive.

As a native Dutchy, I can confirm this is correct. 15 unreleased demos.

  4. Actually, this is a question I recently brought to the attention of the director of Jay's new documentary. I believe KATPA was released on CD, but WHIA was only available on Rockproper. Now it seems like the owner of that site pulled the plug, which means that Jay's final two albums aren't available anymore.

In my opinion, this is a great time to add those albums (and perhaps some others) to Bandcamp. Potential revenues from these downloads can go to the JB Foundation or any other charity. In the end, it's a decent record and it definitely deserves to be heard.

  5. Oh man, in the first 20 seconds I got the message that they were unable to find 2 tickets next to each other, after that all tickets were reserved.

    Bummer.

So, when does the next batch go on sale? Tomorrow?

  6. My gf and I are planning a trip to NYC around her 30th birthday on March 18, so it's needless to say I'm stoked about the Beacon Theatre announcement. However, I'm afraid it will be tough to get tickets. Any advice for a Dutch kid who never visited the States so far - or is it just a matter of logging in to the presale site and pray for the best?

  7. Making one more gesture toward unity before the show drew to a close, Jeff invited William Tyler — who had made his own earnest remarks about the healing power of music during his opening set — to join the band on California Stars. Jeff said it only felt right to have Tyler play with them since everyone had been consoling one another backstage all day, adding that "if you need a hug, William's a very good hugger."

  8. As someone somewhat close to the matter, I have to say that early album leaks rarely happen these days. Don't know if that's due to safety precautions, or the 'music scene' just losing interest in taking the effort. Lately, I've only seen pre-release leaks from bands who decided to send out early mp3 copies to those who preordered the album. Which definitely isn't the case with Schmilco.

By the way, 9/9 is going to be an insane release day.
