  1. cool - he should give it all away for free online. he said he doesn't mind if nobody buys it, after all. crikey there is some serious treble on the high instruments (tambourine & hi hat) - what's that all about?

i agree with you about the sound. it's got a lot of high end. also, the unreleased stuff on that demo are not too revelatory.

yes, he should just put it out online. i mean, what's the point of physical media anymore? get vinyl if you want it. otherwise, if neil really wants to cutting edge, putting it all in the cloud is the way to go. then just update that. playboy just did something similar.

although the demo is cool, it's not user friendly and the rumors are that there's a shit load of easter eggs. neil young is infuriating!

has it been confirmed that the albums are finally going to be remastered?

    -justin

i saw what looked like a release schedule for reprise on rustlist that showed all the albums being re-released as remasters as well as harvest moon live and toast.

  2. Paste magazine is a for-profit endeavor. A "campaign" by artists to "save" a magazine that operates as essentially free advertising for them seems a bit much. They even have a "Donate Now" button. Wow.

I'll donate my cash to charity and spend my money on magazines with something interesting to say.

that does seem to be the case with paste. ANYONE who puts out a cd can advertise in that mag. even some no name from the middle of georgia. i think that's why they cover so much shit. whoever sends them some cash with a promo gets talked about.

  3. IMO Paste killed itself with Lackluster writing, asinine reviews, and decreasing quality of artistic management (layout, photos, etc.). Those are the reasons I canceled my subscription to this once great mag, and why I don't want to support them now.

i just never liked any of the stuff they covered. it's ironic that they focused on 'signs of life' given the fact that most of the stuff they cover is totally adult alternative MOR. sorry to see them go. their office is not more than 2 miles from where i live. the problem is that there is nothing good to cover any more. not to mention the fact that any piece of news one might want about a favorite band is available instantly on the internet.

  4. Have you considered where they will end up when you are gone? Maybe you could do this:

    DJ Donates Collection

i've pretty much digitized. i got so overwhelmed with my music listening habits etc. that i've basically started over. i have kept a few cds for nostalgia's sake to show my kids...tonight's the night, sgt pepper...etc. at this point thought, if you really want the object then vinyl is the way to go. upload the mp3s to the ipod, listen and look at he gatefold. irony at its best.

  5. Collecting is a thing (maybe an obession OCD style)so those who don't do it can't understand it. Some people collect books, some art, some dishes, others graphics, comic books, etc. etc. It is the collecting that is the rush.

I totally defend indie stores, but if you read my post above what is really missing are the larger stores that carried everything so you could go get your Coldplay and not get dissed because they were in business to sell everything, not just the hip.

Even I got dissed (nicely of course) at Laurie's not so long ago because I expressed vague interest in the new recording of Astral Weeks. Laurie's didn't stock it because they can't return it so they despite the cache that Van and his seminal work have, they don't stock this new one at all (nor many other mainstream recordings for the same reason.) This is all part of what is a very fucked up system that the indies and the major outlets are all involved it. It used to be if you wanted music you went to Rose Records, went to the rock (or blues, or folk, or jazz, or show tunes, or classical, etc. etc.) dept and looked around on your own and then asked a clerk if you were confused about what to buy, but more often than not you saw all the records they had and made a guess or bought the newest thing or what a friend suggested or whatever. Those days are gone, which is why many people, including me, get in the internet and order something if I have a hankering for something and just do the deed. (Anybody else out there remember these days or am I the only one??) To get back to the story, since I am not privy to the ins and outs of marketing of various labels (I guess I am now!!!!!) it came as a bit of a shock that there was no way for me to get the new Astral Weeks. Meanwhile I will do what I always do and that is wait for someone to trade in a copy of something and then buy it cheap and NONE of the money will actually go to the artist since most of these types of trades are from folks who get them free as promos and don't want them anymore.

I don't blame anyone for this, but it is one more reason that the music biz is in the toilet. Meanwhile if you wanted a copy of Chinese Democracy on vinyl it WAS available at Best Buy. But if you want a vinyl copy of something more meaningful (a Numero Group LP or a reissue on some specialty label) you have to hit the indie stores and hope for the best, or else just sit home an order one on your computer from the cheapest dealer and don't feel like a dork in either place.

good points. astral weeks is a great example of lack of availability. i remember, i wanted the new eagles a few years ago and had to walmart (ick!) to get one. walmart's not close to my house either.

  6. Maybe I'm a bad person but I don't really care for the small record stores. Every time I go into those places, they're mostly jerks, who give me the attitude that I'm not totally cool because I'm buying some Wilco or Songs: Ohia records. I go where I can get the records I want for the cheapest price, usually the internet now.

i've made the same point here several times. i was listening to sound opinions' record store day special and they had several record store owners and all had that uber cool attitude to me. they kept going on and on about how you can only get 'good' recommendations for new music from the indie record store clerk. i've never gotten any recommendations from those dudes. mostly indifference.

kids would probably frequent these places more, but they just get flack when they want to buy coldplay or nickelback. its too bad.

  7. And your point would be?

It's no big deal if someone doesn't like the cover -- it's subjective, blah blah blah. I don't care ... hate on it all you want.

However, while you may not have directly attacked anyone, the manner in which you expressed your opinion carried an implied attack against those who liked the cover. It also prejudged the music based on the cover alone, which was, let's face it, extremely ridiculous.

When you drop an "opinion" like that in a thread like this, you shouldn't be surprised when you're challenged on it. If you'd merely said "I hate the cover," no one would have cared ... but you pronounced judgment in a very self-absorbed fashion, as if Wilco owes you the cover you want, and you tossed out the phrase "hipster bullshit" as a condemnation of something that most of the rest of the posters in this thread seem to like. So in effect, you're calling those people bullshit hipsters. All I did was turn it around on you.

Then you have the temerity to come back and lecture us on dissenting opinions. How very hipster of you. :rolleyes

with the utmost temerity and self-absorption, i condemn the album cover as 'hipster bullshit'.

ps-"the bullshit hipsters" would be a great band name.

  8. I have absolutely no problem with people not liking the cover. I fully understand why some people don't like the cover.

What I have a problem with is nonsense like this:

These "opinions" say nothing about the cover, but a lot about you.

You're entitled to your opinion, but the reason people have responded to it is because it is, to borrow your phrase, "hipster bullshit."

You're judging the music by the cover, and sorry, but that's hipster bullshit.

You're attempting to denigrate the band, based on a cover you don't like, by comparing them to other bands you don't like. That's the ultimate in hipster bullshit.

hey cryptique, have i personally attacked you or anyone else on this board? no. did i post an emotionally reactive opinion about the new album cover? yes, so has everyone else. mine was just 'different'. are you attacking me personally in this post? yes.

  9. I think they are the German version of the RIAA.

I believe all ROIO BT sites have followed suite, that is no Van Morrison torrents are allowed at sites such as Dime A Dozen.

interesting. i know there isn't anything on demonoid. and much less than usual on btjunkie.

I think they are the German version of the RIAA.

I believe all ROIO BT sites have followed suite, that is no Van Morrison torrents are allowed at sites such as Dime A Dozen.

wow, now fan sites going away is going a little too far. i notice not much van is on itunes, but it's all on amazon. interesting character he is. saw him on leno last night and it was great!

  10. I think a lot of those sort of places will be closing up this year. I just read that Rapidshare turned over all of their records to the GEMA.

what's GEMA? also, what did van morrison do? i actually went looking for something by him on one of 'those' sites yesterday and there was nothing to be found interestingly. seems like any artist could just hire some tech dude to go out there once a week and dismantle torrents, blogs, etc.

  11. I hear you. You have to kind of pick and choose the ones that you go to. I have some "Must see" bands, unfortunately they all seem to come at the same time every year.

    :thumbup

    Twas ribbin' you Francis.

    :dancing

  12. He just says that because he knows he can't pick apart the production of their albums.

i actually love the Dan. fagen's recen solo album is great. just don't listen to them much lately. i'm just mad that concerts cost so much these days. would love to head out to the local outdoor shed to see a few shows this summer, but i don't have an extra $500s. now, if i were going back in time to see a classic band, then i might spring the cash. :dancing

  13. This one's for real, I already bought the dream.

Got up this a.m. and completely forgot about buying tickets, but was looking for something to pop into my wife's van while I ran errands and picked up Steely Dan, Live in America. Said, "oops" ran to the computer about 1.5 hours after they went on sale

The result: 7th row center. Abut $113 a seat but no ticketmaster fees!

utterly ridiculous price when fagen is just gonna mumble and vamp becker does basically nothing. why do people keep buying tickkets this expensive?

  14. Is this the collaboration with Jason Molina?

i wondered about that too. if he's got a solo disc and the molina collaboration coming out, he sure is prolific. anyone hear the magnolia 7inch from record store day? i guess an ep is coming out as well.

  15. My foray into Will Johnson was Fort Recovery. It's an okay album. Next I tried Dual Hawks. Same result. A friend of mine turned me onto Vultures Await. I thought it was pretty good. Then I picked up Love You Just the Same last year and was blown away. I've gone back to some of their other stuff and have gained more of an appreciation - especially for Vultures Await. Will's voice is definitely an acquired taste. He is, however, amazingly talented and prolific. Considering some of the bands you show love for here Rider, I think you should give these guys and/or Will a second chance. If you haven't heard Love You Just the Same, I would start there in your do-over of all things Johnson.

Funny. A lot of people say this about Jay Farrar, Neil Young, and Bob Dylan. ;)

okay, thanks for the info. and you're right about farrar and young. good points;)

i downloaded a few songs from love you. we'll see. south san gabriel is the same band, right?

  16. Love them too. Love You Just the Same is my favorite Will Johnson release, followed closely by Vultures Await.

i wish i could get into this. the music is always so good and well produced. i just can't get on board with will's voice and sometimes odd lyrics.
