  1. I agree with much of what you say. "Hollywood" is perfect. "Green Grass" is perfect, minus about 3 songs.

Sound of Lies is a kind of bizarre mix of songs, but I like it far more than Rainy Day Music. In fact, I might even put "Smile" ahead of RDM.

The Creekdippers' output definitely is a mixed bag.

I'm curious what you don't like off the new record. I agree that it's slow. Some days I just don't feel in the mood to be patient and listen through it. But I only notice a couple stumbles...."Kick the Wood" and the 2 bonus songs do nothing for me. But the rest all have elements of greatness and beauty.

well, i think you're right about the new album. it definitely requires some attention and it is a grower. good points there. as far as smile and sound of lies, i don't really know why i don't like them. i've tried several times and i just can't get into them. i remember buying sound of lies the day it came out and being so pissed:). smile would have been a bit better for me if it had been more country...whatever that means. so i loved rainy day. really a 'return to form' i guess.

much of my comments about the gary and olson stem from my strengthening belief that some artists are just better in the presence of others. it's quite a mystical thing that lennon and mccartney solo are touch and go, but together they wrote some of the greatest songs of all time. very interesting to me.

side note: the other 'bad' song on tomorrow the green grass is 'bad time'...oh so bad!

  2. Rick Rubin owns the rights to the name i believe, and so at least if they want to record anything they needs his blessing...and presumably to give him a slice of the pie.

rick rubin owns the name jayhawks...ridiculous!

since seeing them last week, i've been revisiting their music, solo and jayhawks. there's no denying that mark and gary are at their best together. hollywood and tomorrow the green grass are just classic albums up there with any great album of the last 50 years. (except 10 little kids...such a dumb song). smile and sound of lies are just completely different beasts. i personally don't like them at all. hence not a real fan of gary's solo album. mark's creekdipper stuff is fun, but way underproduced and victoria williams is tough to take. now, the new album is okay. some of the songs don't work and it is a really slow album. i really miss gary's electric guitar. he has this awesome mix of clarence white and neil young in his tone. so, i for one, would love to see a new jayhawks album with bass and drums backing up gary on electric and mark on acoustic playing only songs they wrote together...left to their own devices these guys just can't hold it together.

sidenote: rainy day music is pretty good as i think rubin kept louris from going nuts.

    sidenote: chris robinson producer???

  3. C'mon, it's 3 songs. Baker Street, Right down the line, and Stuck in the Middle (I assume he gets Steelers wheel money).

I like all 3 of those songs.

Nothing wrong with a bender but it sounds like he has been on one for 30 years.

oh yeah, he does get at least 3 songs. my point was that one song can make one a millionaire.

i remember the first time i heard the sax solo in Baker St.... lying in bed on a stinking hot night 20 years ago

my dad was a youth minister in the late 70s and i remember him taking the youth group to the skating rink. i got to go with him and i distinctly remember hearing Baker Street with the disco ball swirling and the skaters doing the boogie bounce!

  4. addiction is brutal, no doubt.

that said, City to city is a great album. just a total 70s album that is so smooth. wish they produced them like that these days. maybe a little less smooth though. there is a song on there called 'stealin' time' which is amazing.

it's amazing the man makes a living on two songs. it's like randy meisner...he co-wrote take it to the limit and makes a good living off of it FOREVER!

  5. Sorry - I just thought it was a tad rude and I was in a bad mood this morning - the dude has been a member for almost 2 years now, probably just doesn't post much...like me. Anyway, you should really say JESUS CHRIST ON FALCOR!!

my post was rude and ridiculous.

    peace

  6. It seems absurd.

    No, it's fair.

seriously, conservative radio is pissed about it because they wont be able to get away with as much bullshit as usual.

(i say conservative radio, because there is no liberal radio. they would be having to change things a bit too.)

  7. No thanks, I'd find that really boring. Wasn't that the problem with SBS? :P

the thing is that all the tunes on SBS, besides SBS and Please Be Patient, are utterly compelling. each is like a little symphony with several connecting parts. not like prog rock, but true art pop. tweedy's basic songs with cool instrumental parts.

now as far as nels taking more of a role in the new album, i see it being more of what we had on SBS, but with more textures and maybe more extensions of song themes. it doesn't have to be electric either. given nels new acoustic album, i would love to see a basic tweedy tune with either a long acoustic textured intro by nels or a long outro or both. as i said before, add in some tasty licks from mikael and john...wow....oh, and we could say the same for glenn. just drop in an amazing glenn composition in the middle of a song. everything is so intentional with each one of the band members...it's amazing! :worship

  8. i actually hope nels really plays a big role in arrangement this time. he is an untapped treasure in wilco and not just a sideman. given his new release, the new album could be utterly amazing if they let nels go off on tweedy's basic songs. add in some tasty bass from john and glenn's warm drumming and we might have a masterpiece!

  9. That album came out in '77 or '78. Half the album is studio versions and the other live versions. I think the "Ramble On Rose" was from an early 70s show, '72 or '73.

most of the stuff on strange trip is culled from europe 72. live album from, well, 1972. pick it up.

on a side note, i always thought that had they shelved europe 72 and put out another album after american beauty it would have been KILLER. can you imagine nice tight versions of jack straw, Tjed, he's gone, ramble, BT women. my hunch is bob didn't have enough tunes for an album.
