  1. The thing I recall about Normal is they tease "Stayin' Alive" (at the time a big hit from Sat Night Fever) and then take it right into "Me & My Uncle". I don't know why this sticks out to me, but it always cracked me up.

Another nice little "Stayin Alive" jam shows up at the Rupp Arena show 4/21/78. I believe they strut through it from Space -> Stella.

I believe David Gans said that the XM GD channnel will be playing UCLA 12/30/78 on 11/26/12 at noon. That show is a great warm up to the New Years show the next night.

  2. If you guys could pick the next 5 (D's) Picks what would they be? Favorite shows are very subjective. I might lean more toward event shows or shows with great or odd set lists.

    10/16/81 Amsterdam (Bobby's B-Day) obscure set list.

    12/31/76 Cow Palace

11/4/77 Colgate U. (the band billed as "the Home Coming Band) great show.

1/22/78 Eugene Oregon - for the great Close Encounters Jam.

11/14/73 San Diego - for the never ending Other One.

Then of course I got to add 10/29/77 Dekalb....truly a musical event. (one of my all time favorite)

  3. Its time for a new thread on the Dead.

Anyone get the new Dave's Picks? Vol 5?

How do you like the Playin > UJB > AM Dew > UJB > Playin ? Good stuff.

There is a nice second set opener of Playin > UJB > AM Dew > UJB > Playin from 11/10/73 Winterland.

    Its worth seeking for.

  4. Good JGB. I have found that 76-77 JGB has a very stoney sound. They rock but there is something odd about it. The rock as a mellow under tone (stoney). By 1978, JGB picks up a bit. 1979 Reconstruction and 1980 JGB really shakes off the stoney vibe and rocks much harder. Find a good version of After Midnight -> Eleanor Rigby -> After Midnight. Now thats some good stuff!

  5. Sorry to hear that.

Take a break.( Nothing wrong with taking a break).

Listen to The Beatles. (Beatles are good)

Clear your mind. Come back new.

Wilco is good music. Wilco will always be good music!

  6. Thanks for posting the article.

I saw and heard them play it in Reno. Third song into the show. One Sunday Morning -> Poor Places -> The Art of Almost. Wilco was off and running. The band blew the doors off and lifted the roof. What intensity! The pressure kept building and building until the hard drive crashed! Favorite song that night.

Looking for the recording of that show (9/23/12) ???

  7. 8.28.1981 Shakedown drowning in dewars...

so...dewars and 8.28.1981 Shakedown Street...a very nice mix indeed...I've always loved the 8.28.1981 show - and in particular the shakedown. For me, to judge a version of a song depends usually on the jam. The "song" portion of this shakedown is solid enough, but the jam is where jerry takes this to a highly exceptional level. Quickly the jam is launched from careful walking to a proud and arrogant strut, that leads into a series of high note angles. The intensity grows around this and soon the band is swimming in intensity and tension. Jerry wanders from the apex and starts anew with a cascade downward with the band chasing after him...those are the best jams...eventually they catch him and jerry rewards with one of the most amazing shakedown apexes i've heard...it starts with a little series of notes from brent and ends with jerry following and exploding into a massive apex with very piercing jerry notes. ahh...the band reaches this apex, concludes it, and nonchalantly wanders back to the ending of song, but i'm not fooled...They must have been very aware of the amazing version they just experienced...and they must have been aware of all the deadheads who would gleefully enjoy dewars while listening 21 years later...

and so it reminds of why certain versions of songs are much better than others - for me anyways - it usually has nothing to do with the song...but rather has to do with the jerry led jam (was it exceptional / average / or below average or dazzling...)...

oh and the ensuing lost sailor saint wheel blues jam (that may be highlight of who) into never trust... is also amazing...

    1981+jerry+look.jpg (a 1981 photo from march i believe - not the 8.28.1981 show)

I was at that show. (As well as the night before) Great show! Great Shakedown. I have the tapes of that show in the vault.

Still in all ---favorite Shakedown has gotta be 4/6/82. Jerry and Brent duke it out note for note, Then Jerry hits the afterburners and takes off like a rocket while the rest of the band hangs on in the jet wash. There are great Shakedowns and then there is the Shakedown from 4/6/82.

  8. Grateful Dead - Long Beach Sports Arena , Long Beach, CA - 12/13/80. Great show!

Nope that was wrong. Some dust just cleared. The first concert I went to was Rick Danko and Paul Butterfield.

They played the Roxy on the Sunset Strip. My best guess would be 1978. I remember Danko was smashed.

    Kinda disappointing.

    Then came the Dead show.

    Sorry for the confusion.

  9. David Ganns and Gary Lambert talked with the new owner last Sunday on the XM GD channel (Tales From The Golden Road).

Sounds fantastic to have it going again. Dylan will be the opening act. The new owner has a pretty solid business plan. Its only a matter of time for Wilco to be on stage there.

  10. Listen to it again. Maybe the chorus is a bit precious/cloying, but the verses totally KILL.

Its not like I have only heard a couple times. I use to like it when I was a kid. That was a long time ago.

I don't care for it now. Its.....its... too much Paul! Too much purple dinosuer-ish...Barney like.

  11. It would be nice to vote for some one I believe in. Instead I just play the game of voting against the other guy. I wish Obama's 1st term was more impressive. I'll vote for him again cause I am not voting for the other guy. But what about the libertian canidate? The 3rd party needs a bigger boost.

  12. One more thing about The Last Waltz. The show was broadcast that night in the Bay Area. The entire show does exist. Its worth tracking down. 6 hours of the raw real deal. Multiple songs from their guest and well as other Band songs that were left out of the WB release. Seek and you will find. (if you want it)

Did it get an offical release? Or was that just a glorified new box release with extras?

  13. Ah to be young again......wait, you're 49??

An interesting note on this movie - Pauline Kael panned the shit out of it when it first came out.

    LouieB

    Thanks LouieB.

Not that young anymore. Its catching up with me.

I knew at some point I would be watching The Last Waltz again. Soon.

Yesterday, KUNR fm was planning alot of Levon and a lot of The Band. I found myself sitting in the car listening to It Makes No Difference from The Last Waltz on the car radio. I said "thats it, its time to watch The Last Waltz" So I did.

I lost track of how many times I saw it in the theater when it came out in 1978. It seems like it has always just been apart of my life. The Last Waltz was (and still is) a major road map for my musical journey. That road map would eventually lead me to Wilco.

Anyways, The Last Waltz is still amazing to watch. The performances are still top notch. It will stand the test of time.

PS - Did you guys hear that they laid Levon to rest next to Rick Danko. That was one of the most touching things I heard at the end of Levons journey.....have fun guys! That band upstairs keeps getting better and better.
