I'm not usually a fan of Vince Welnick-only shows, but this one has a very good Let It Grow with Jerry playing very articulate and speedy runs. There is something great about Garcia soloing away on the better Bobby tunes (the ones with space for jamming, like Lazy Lightning, Let It Grow, Saint of Circumstance, Cassidy, etc)

Got other favorite versions of Let It Grow? Personally, I find the vocals on the '73 and '74 versions a bit off-putting, although I do like having the full Weather Report Suite. I think Let It Grow really blossomed into a powerhouse in the 80s.

Check out the Let It Grow from Dekalb 10/29/77. Its a smoker!

  2. Nope.

They have jammed a little in the past.

Casnio Queen ->Outtsite -> Monday etc (end of show rockers).

Some good jams in the 90's & 00's. But still not full on.

My favorite How to Fight Loneliness -> Not For The Season. nice jam.

    But not a jam band.

It might be nice if they mixed it up a bit more.

    Jam some!

  3. I have reservations about your last post.

Will you make an announcement when your reservations have been lifted about the song in general? Or at least the studio version?

Poor Places > Reservations is such a nice way to end that album. (IMO) I mean it sincerely.

  4. Okay here is a smoker- I listened to this 2nd set driving to Lone Pine this morning in the rain ->>

    11/17/73 Pauley Pavilion UCLA

    2nd set highlight - Playin>Uncle John's>AM Dew>Uncle John's>Playing. WOW!

A real nice Eyes>Sugar Mag to close the set.

The run of Playin>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playin was done three times. (also 11/10/73 & 3/23/74) As the Tapers Compendium Vol.1

states - this version "is absolutely flawless in its execution"

Check it out if you can.

  5. I guess this where I figured money changed hands. I guess the good price was the cost of the "x number of blanks" - which makes sense.

I'm sure I could have explained it better. You are right. The only place money was involved was for the blanks and postage. If you ever came across somebody who wanted to sell you bootleg tapes, you just would not do it. That was a no, no. That was not how it went. It was free trade and trade freely. That was the beauty of it. That held true a little later too. Not too long ago there was a fair amount of trading discs on this site. The old fashion way "blanks & postage - no money - trade and trade a like" for Wiclo / Tweedy shows etc...... Maybe they still do it?

  6. What was the deal with Terripan Tapes - how did it work? I had one direct source for tapes, before I started to torrant.

Terrapin Tapes was a source to get blank tapes in bulk at good prices. For me it was a slow process to get the tapes filled with music. This was before the Well and other internet sites. For out of town sources I'd have to go get the Relix Magazine go to the tape traders section. (I lived in a small ski town and local sources were very limited.) Look for the Deadheads "your list gets mine", It was the honor system. I'd mail off my tape list and they would send theirs. Study their list, make the deal - x number of tapes for x number of tapes. Hope and prey they would be true to their word. Hope their grading was right on too. Hoped a soundboard was a soundboard. A week or two would pass. Then a package(s) would arrive. I made a lot of good friends and amassed a lot of good music for my vault. I only got ripped off once. Then when I was up to my armpits in tapes, CD and CD burning showed up. The vault became a mix of the two.

1653 hours of Grateful Dead, 323 hrs of Jerry, 909 of Dylan and 765 hr of misc (Wilco, Tweedy, The Beatles studio session out-takes, Neil Young, The Band and the like). Its way too easy these days.

  7. "I spent years searching for the best quality recording of this show that I could find, and my search took me to many places and made me a very good friend to this day. I was able to upgrade my audience cassettes to the soundboard recording in late '91 by way of the old Terrapin Station bbs, run by Cap'n Trips out of CT. This was before I found the WELL."

I used to buy my Maxells in bulk from that place. Still have over 1000 tapes in huge tupperware bins. Bust them out every once in a blue moon, too....

Is that the same place as Terrapin Tapes?

If so they had great bulk deals.

  8. What was the smallest venue you saw them in? Best show??

Smallest Venue - Frost Ampitheater, Palo Alto, CA 10/10/82

    Favorite/best show - Frost Ampitheater 10/10/82

Great show - harvest time from Humboldt!!

    Great Weather. Good Window-Pane!

Small venue Jerry shows - Keystone Berkeley 8/21/81

    Keystone Palo Alto 8/23/81

    Mojo's Arcata CA 3/18 & 19/82

Country Club Reseda, CA 9/30/83 (My 21st B-day)

  9. I found them via Mermaid Ave when it first came out. Then I got my hands on a bootleg Tweedy disc from 10/21/99. (great show).

Started to collect Wilco bootlegs after that. I had not heard a studio album until sometime between YHF and the I Am Trying To Break Your Heart film. Continued to add bootlegs (Wilco, Tweedy and the like) to the vault. Finally saw them in Portland OR 11//11/04 (standing behind Sarah C) and the again at the Berkeley Greek 6/11/05. Great Great shows. Top notch performers. (can't say enough)

I wish I could see more shows. Still in all, one of my all time favorite bands!

  10. You people are wacky! Something is way wrong here. Did you forget the news?

Wilco has a new album coming out this Fall and there is a possiblity that it just may be a double album.

    WTF people!

I can't believe the turn and tone of this thread.

Shall we blame Wilco for stringing you out for so long between albums.

Would you all behave a little better or be a little nicer if Wilco would produce an album a year? I doubt it.

You would surely find something to piss and moan about.

    Grow up!
