While I'm posting setlists, let me just add that we once again had the pleasure of hearing some of the fabulous musical exploits of our friends Dave Mirabella and Martin Rivas. Aside from their contributions to Jeff's performance as noted above, they also each played a set for us and I would feel remiss without listing those setlists as well...
Dave Mirabella's opening set was, he said, mostly new, original material, so I'm pretty much taking everything off of the setlist he used:
-Far Away
-Real Life
-Before You Go
-Hoover
-Sky Falls
-Burned Again
-Ruby-Colored Halo
-Guardrail
-No Guarantees
And Mr. Martin Rivas brought the solo Sunday Morning Campfire to the Hotel S 'n' S (clearly we know where Mart hopes to be in early August when a certain reunion tour hits MSG):
-What You Won't Do For Love [bobby Caldwell]
-What Becomes of the Brokenhearted [Jimmy Ruffin]
-Tempted [squeeze]
-Don't Stand So Close To Me [The Police]>Money For Nothing [Dire Straits] interlude
-Move On Up [Curtis Mayfield]>Freddy's Dead [Curtis Mayfield] outro
-A New Word
-Let's Stay Together [Al Green]
-I Thank You [sam & Dave]
-Tush [ZZ Top] (fragment)
-Superstition [stevie Wonder]
-Driven To Tears [The Police]
-Walking On The Moon [The Police]
-Sunken Treasure [Wilco]
---------bye to Canadian Judy and family break----------
-Glorious
-I'll Be Around [The Spinners]
-Funkytown [Lipps, Inc.] (fragment-"You Get The Gist")
-So Lonely [The Police]
-Be My Girl - Sally [The Police] (poem fragment)
-North

Sorry for the delay in getting this up here...
Jeff played on everything, so I'm pretty much only noting when he was joined by others. In the later stages of the show, on songs that he didn't write, others shared in the vocal duties, so that was kind of tough to note. I tried my best.
Anyway, without further ado, here were the songs (in order, of course) played last night at the Hotel S 'n' S:
-Blasting Fonda
-If That's Alright
-"The Happy Song"
-Walk Where He Walked
-In a Future Age
-(Was I) In Your Dreams
-New Madrid
-Strangers [Kinks] (w/Dave Mirabella on guitar)
-I'm Always in Love
-----------pee break 1--------------
-Should've Been in Love
-Kamera
-Let's Not Get Carried Away
-Chinese Apple
-More Like The Moon
-Woodgrain
-Box Full of Letters
-Laminated Cat
-Pink Moon [Nick Drake]
-ELT
-Poor Places
-Reservations
-I Wish I Was Your Mother [Mott the Hoople]
-You Were Wrong
-Gun
-Black Eye
-Radio King
-Summer Teeth
-California Stars
-The Late Greats
-Here Comes The Sun [beatles] (w/Martin Rivas on guitar and vocals and Adam Fitz on omnichord)
-Candyfloss
-Henry and the H-Bombs [Mott the Hoople]
------------pee break 2----------------
-Stand By Me [ben E. King] (Five Man Acoustical Jam: Jeff Tweedy, Martin Rivas, Dave Mirabella, Adam Fitz and Devin Davis on guitar)

Happiest of birthdays, m'dear! Hope you're keeping warm and toasty with a nice bottle of some earthy red vino...
-
hope you're having the best birthday yet, k! i'm sure you're having a great time in the tropics, despite kris' blunt characterization of them...
i'll hoist a nice ale in your honor tonight...

If you produce a picture of Ms. Y not holding a coffee cup, I'm going to call shenanigans of the photoshop variety!
I do have a good picture of Ms. Y to share, but right went I went to post it, my computer went totally crazy. (I'm on my roommate's computer now.) I'll post the photo as soon as I figure out what's wrong with my machine. Hopefully it's nothing too serious...
-
Are there any pics of ms y were she isn't holding a cup of ?
Oh, I've got a good one. I'll post it when I get home.

For anyone who cares (Stoffel, this means you), Scott McCaughey did another solid opening set in Birmingham. As in New Orleans, he played mostly keyboards and was accompanied by drummer Joe Adragna (of the band The Junior League). Although tonight was just their second time performing together, to their credit, Scott and Joe changed up the set a fair bit. Tonight, one of the nuggets we got was The Old Plantation off the Down With Wilco record.
And the Hank Williams cover was also a nice surprise. I can't remember if Scott mentioned Joe telling him that Hank Williams died in Birmingham (which turns out not to be true) or if Joe said that he just spent one of his last nights in Birmingham, not far from the Alabama Theatre (which is true). Either way, it was a neat rendition of the song.
At any rate, the "Minus 2" set went this way:
The Town That Lost Its Groove Supply
My Life as a Creep
Cemetery Row
The Old Plantation
Daggers Drawn
Original Luke (Scott on baritone guitar)
I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive (Scott-guitar) [Hank Williams]
Rifle Called Goodbye
Aw Shit Man (Scott-guitar)

As Jeff himself noted, tonight's show was a completely opposite experience from the previous night in New Orleans. Not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing, but I will say I probably had more fun at the New Orleans show.
Despite the loudness at the House of Blues, there was just much more of a feeling of sharing something with a bunch of people as opposed to tonight when it was a big, darkened theater and I just felt very removed from Jeff and even most of the people around me. I don't know if that makes any sense--probably not--but that's kind of the way I felt. Certainly tonight's crowd was much more quiet and respectful (except for a few chatty dudes) than N.O., but maybe too much so...
Anyway, setlist as follows:
Spiders (Kidsmoke)
Remember The Mountain Bed
IATTBYH
Muzzle of Bees
Sunken Treasure
Wait Up
The Ruling Class
She's A Jar
new song-Be Patient With Me
New Madrid
Airline to Heaven
-----------------------------------
Laminated Cat
Gun
Theologians
Bob Dylan's 49th Beard
Heavy Metal Drummer
Jesus, etc.
I'm The Man Who Loves You
------------------------------------
A Shot in the Arm
Someone's Else's Song (without p.a. system)
Acuff-Rose (w/o p.a.)
-
The two new songs he's been playing a lot solo are both pretty quiet, so...
Yeah, and judging from the crowd response to different songs, it seemed at least to me like there were a lot of "newer" fans who wanted to hear the "hits." Although there was some hooting and hollering for Uncle Tupelo stuff, the energy level was probably best when he did some of the singalongs off of YHF and AGIB--Jesus, HMD, Theologians, etc.
What I'm trying to say is that it probably wasn't the best overall venue to play some quiet songs that only a few people knew...
-
must have been a quiet audience!
Somewhat the opposite, actually. Jeff decided to try the unplugged approach early on seemingly to see how the talkers would react to an unamplified number. They piped down for a little while, but when it started to get louder again, Jeff's only recourse was to play, as he put it, "songs where I shout." He showed us his cheat sheet with those aforementioned songs and another cheat sheet with like 80 percent of the songs blacked out because, as Jeff explained, they were just too quiet for this type of venue and crowd.
My personal favorite jackass of the night was the guy toward the front who kept yelling loudly for California Stars. Personally, it wouldn't have been my request, but fine, whatever. The thing was, at some point--I can't remember if it was before or after Jeff acceded to the request--the guy starts explaining why he was so eager to hear the song. This is a direct quote: "I saw (Wilco do) California Stars in West Palm in '98 and I was making out with some British chick at the time." And then after Jeff gently chided the crowd for its lack of knowledge about setlist construction, basically implying that it should have saved a song like CS for later in the show, the guy actually yelled out something like, "I don't give a shit about the set" or something to that effect. Who are these people?

Tonight was the first show on this tour that I've gotten to see with Scott McCaughey opening, and since I haven't really seen a lot written about Scott's opening sets, I figured I'd at least post what he played tonight.
It was a treat to hear some songs off the Down With Wilco record, especially Daggers Drawn. And it was totally awesome to hear his version of So Much Wine. Apparently Scott's been playing with different local people each night, so his sets have been changing at least a little bit from night to night. At tonight's show, he had Joe Adragna (of a New Orleans band called The Junior League) with him on drums and background vocals. Scott played mostly keyboard, somewhat surprisingly. On a few numbers, he also played baritone guitar.
Anyway, here was his set:
Rifle Called Goodbye
Twilight Distillery
Daggers Drawn
My Life As A Creep
Original Luke (Scott-guitar)
So Much Wine (Scott-guitar) [Handsome Family]
The Town That Lost Its Groove Supply
The Days of Wine and Booze
Aw Shit Man (Scott-guitar)

I'm waiting in line on friday at largo for this fellow.
Something tells me that you might have some company.
-
I believe Paul has a photo of the empty venue, which he may post when he's not in class.
Here's the picture of the inside of Liberty Hall that I snapped with my cell-phone camera. I literally stuck my phone just inside the door and snapped, so this really is the whole venue.
Here's one of my other favorite cell-phone pictures from the weekend. It's Marfa's one real stoplight (they also had a blinking yellow, but I'm not counting that one):
And just so Kris' mind is fully at peace, I did make it back to NYC in plenty of time for my 3-6 p.m. class yesterday! I'm on the weekend travel plan for the time being, but the Marfa show was--thank goodness--on a Sunday!
-
In my haste, I omitted The Ruling Class in the above setlist [edit: I added it in my original post, but obviously someone correct me if I'm wrong]. I'm pretty sure it came after Blasting Fonda, but it's 4:45 a.m., I'm sitting in the Midland airport and I'm not 100 percent certain. Hopefully someone else can confirm...
It was definitely played, though.

'Sky Blue Sky' isn't new, it's other title is 'Zamboni Man,' from the short film of the same name. This is its third live play, I think...
It's actually called Lullaby for Rafters and Beams.
-
I totally echo Tualla on this--go see these guys! They're super nice and have a great sound, to boot. Just wish they were coming to the East Coast...
-
I believe that one Jeff Tweedy has said in the past that "the second night is always better." Not just talking about his own band, but pretty much any band. FWIW.

From what I know about it (and from looking at my copy), it was a two-disc promo set put out by Warner Music Canada to promote Summerteeth.
Disc 1 is basically an advance copy of the record.
Disc 2 (the "and sum aren't" part of the title) is a mish-mash of album tracks and some live cuts. Here's the tracklisting--I'm sure this exists somewhere else, but I'm too lazy to go searching around for it:
1) I Must Be High (album version)
2) Pick Up The Change (album version)
3) Passenger Side (album version)
4) Monday (demo version)
5) I Got You (At The End of the Century) (album version)
6) Hotel Arizona (album version)
7) Outta Site (Outta Mind) (live version from 6-7-97; Wilcobase doesn't list a show for that date, so maybe it was a private industry thing?)
8) Someone Else's Song (album version)
9) Red Eyed and Blue (live version--disc says recorded live at C'est What in Toronto 1997, but I'm assuming it's from the Jeff and Jay show there on 11-20-96)
10) Box Full of Letters (live version--disc says recorded live at C'est What in Toronto 1997, but I'm assuming it's from the Jeff and Jay show there on 11-20-96)
11) Why Would You Wanna Live (album version)
12) Forget The Flowers (live version--disc says recorded live at C'est What in Toronto 1997, but I'm assuming it's from the Jeff and Jay show there on 11-20-96)
13) The Lonely 1 (album version)
14) Sunken Treasure (live version--disc says recorded live at C'est What in Toronto 1997, but I'm assuming it's from the Jeff and Jay show there on 11-20-96)
15) At My Window Sad And Lonely (album version)
16) Blasting Fonda (non-album track)

I think the series has been really good so far and the credit really has to go to Ronen for having the idea and then putting it together. Glenn and Nels and company were great as always and Andrew Bird last week (it was last week, wasn't it?) was a huge treat! Looking forward to the next show in January...

Have a tremendous, stupendous, totally rad b-day, B!
See ya soon!

I make it a rule not to self-incriminate--ha!
No, seriously Judes, I can only keep tabs on what's going on setlist-wise for so long. By the time we started in, I think it was the after, after, after-party and I had put the notebook away. But since you brought it up (and for the approximately five people who care) after Mr. Rivas' finished, the setlist went on:
-Corduroy Cutoff Girl (w/Dr. Judy, Paul, Brianne and others on vocals and Dave Mirabella on guitar)
-Sandusky (solo guitar version by Dave Mirabella)
Am I missing anything else in the post-, post-, post-party shenanigans?
And Sandy, I don't remember "Walk On" at any point, although I could have missed a fragment somewhere in there. Anyone else remember?
