EL the Famous
No one hates the Beatles unless they are totally crazed. or just really don't happen to like their music?
LouieB
or just really don't happen to like their music? Hating their music is one thing (I assume you aren't refering to yourself), but again, I don't know anyone who doesn't think they were a bunch of hard working musicians who maybe got a bit lucky. Equating John Mayer and the Beatles seems like something I wouldn't want to argue about no matter what. LouieB

Equating John Mayer and the Beatles seems like something I wouldn't want to argue about no matter what. Nope, I love the Beatles. I'm just saying that it's completley plausible someone could 'hate' the Beatles w/out being 'crazed'...Mark David Chapman exlcuded. Back to the subject, in said article what did Mayer say/do that pissed you off so bad, Lou? Did he actually compare himself to these blues greats ala Hounddog Taylor you think all John Mayer fans should listen to or what? I'll just say, while not my cup of tea, he's written some great pop songs, plays some decent guitar, likes to dabble in the blues and his success he's found with all of that looks pretty deserved to me. Plus, it looks like he's banging Jessica Simpson...bet Hounddog Taylor can't say that.
Guest Jules
I actually liked a lot of the "John Mayer Trio" album. And don't forget, he won a Grammy!

Nah nothing like that. he just comes across as kind of a dick that's all. he's basically a good musician, but a lightweight person (and maybe a bit of a lightweight musician, but I have never heard any of his albums, only some of his songs on XRT so I don't really know.) As with most of the crap pubished in RS, even if he were deeper than he appears, they weren't anywhere near portraying that, which may be a huge disservice to him, I don't know. As for Hounddog, you can bet he would have wanted Jessica, but it wasn't ever going to happen... LouieB
mpolak21
I've always found his music pretty bland, even the John Mayer trio stuff doesn't really do it for me. I didn't even realize he was a bit of a prick, that I could forgive though if I enjoyed his stuff. I did enjoy hearing his first single get airplay, just because it was a break from the nu-metal rap-rock moment. I'll say he was great in that Chappelle show episode and does a pretty interesting cover of Radiohead's Kid A, but other then that I care very little about him. --Mike
LouieB
Last night i finished the article in RS.....another revelation, Mayer likes reading about blues figures but never finishes a book. He got to chapter 3 in BB King's autobiography where he talks about sleeping with hundreds of women, then goes on to describe his own encounters with female fans......heavy duty stuff.... LouieB It's a good thing this affects his music and ability to play said music. I read an interview with Bob Dylan where he came off as a totally pretentious prick. I pretty much despised him through the entirety of the article. That doesn't mean he still didn't write "Desolation Row". (No, I'm not comparing John Mayer and Bob Dylan, I'm just saying that a person's personality doesn't dictate how much one should or shouldn't like their music. Find a real criticism of the dude. Say he writes music for 12 year old girls, or he looks really stupid when he sings.)
LouieB
Bob Dylan is a prick, but but then again he is Bob Dylan, not John Mayer. That article wasn't that great either by the way (I get RS free from buying something at Best Buy, not because I think it is a good magazine.) Most of that article was fairly unremarkable. it was not an interview with questions and answers it was the guy writing about what Dylan said. (The first RS I ever bought had a Dylan interview, but then this was 1969 and it was a real interview). Frankly I am just giving you a bit of shit here bobbob and I know you are a youngster so don't take it too personally. Most musicians have little or nothing to say. Frankly it is a good thing they have a level of talent that the rest of us slobs don't have. Since I can't play, sing or write anything, we have to leave it to guys like Bob Dylan to fulfill our fantasies. John Mayer on the other hand, doesn't do much for me or many people here. If I want to hear the blues, there is nearly 100 years of crazy, excellent and wacky shit to listen to so that guys like Mayer don't have to take my time. Chuck Berry may also have been (shall we say be since he is still alive) the biggest prick around, but the guy made records you can listen to hundreds of times and be amazed at. If you have never given Berry's Chess material a listen, I suggest you do it. Then listen to Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, etc. etc. etc. and you will realize John Mayer ain't got shit, but a fast hand and a keen ear. Despite getting four stars on Continuum, I can't believe it is worth that many. It may be worth that much to the current RS demographic though and I suppose that's all that counts. One thing Mayer can do is play real good. He can undoubted play rings around any of the original or second or third generation of Chicago blues people. But pick up an album by Hound Dog Taylor (for example) and you won't ever think about listening to John Mayer again. (or maybe you will, what do I know.) mjpuczko
you also had to walk 10 miles to school in 6 feet of snow, right? Edited September 19, 2006 by mjpuczko
LouieB
you also had to walk 10 miles to school in 6 feet of snow, right? Nah...nothing quite like that....(but i do remember when Rolling Stone actually had articles in it about music.....) LouieB
EL the Famous
Did Mayer or anybody else even say that Continuum should be considered a traditional blues album? If this was a thread about his 'trio' project, i'd understand the prodding to Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, etc. to put things into some sort of context. Otherwise, your using apples and oranges to try and get somebody to listen to what you think is good (AKA superior) music. While stepping back to look at the roots of contemporary artists to better enjoy their music can oft be a really cool experience...it's not and shouldn't be required to enjoy somebody's music. LouieB
Well ....sure... I am sure John Mayer's semi-adult contempory easy listening is fairly comparable to Eric Clapton's geriatric semi-contemporary easy listening. Both of their work is pleasant and inoffensive. No reason not to listen to it, but after reading about him nothing exactly makes me want to hear it. Then again I grew up walking 10 miles through 6 feet of snow listening to Eric Clapton and I don't particularly want to listen to him either. LouieB
EL the Famous
The last time I bought something because of something I read in Rolling Stone was...well, never. I'm just busting balls Lou. I'd never disagree that checking into most, if not all, of the artists you mention would be an enriching experience to anybody even remotely interested in the blues or even music in general. The fact is, which 4 star album from the last RS would you likely invest in?? John Mayer Continuum or TV on the Radio?? Just from the review I would buy TV on the Radio sight unheard. John Mayer I have heard over the years and there is no fucking way.... At least TV on the Radio, though in fact I may not like it, sounds like it has something original going for it. (If they gave Eric Clapton FIVE stars I wouldn't buy that either....) LouieB

At least TV on the Radio, though in fact I may not like it, sounds like it has something original going for it. Original doesn't always equal good. Plus, i'm all for new takes on old sounds if it's done really well...like the first 2-3 Oasis albums. As far as Clapton goes, i'll just say that as lame as the Journeyman album was...I had some mad good sex to that one time my sophmore year in college. It was like Slowhand was right there in the room w/ me in a labcoat, injecting a hypodermic full of thermonuclear spanish fly right into her left buttock. So, while I won't tell bobtothebob to buy any blues albums, i'd reccomend that one and see what happens.

Sir Stewart
Man, I actually kind of like that album.I wish I never sold any CD ever. My collection would be about 50 stronger today. Damn money problems.I actualy DLed "Starry Night" from that album recently. Not as good as I remembered, but not bad either. I used to rock the fuck out to "Home". I'm not saying John Mayer is an amazing blues artist or anything. He's a talented guitarist who writes pop songs that I enjoy. How dare you.
