not really lou. each sports company that sponsors teams have 16" leagues & they fill up quite quickly. all you have to do is check out half the parks around town in the summer & fall to see them.
While 16 inch softball has not disappeared it is decreasing in popularity and there are fewer leagues than there used to be back in the day. There have been stories about this recently in the news. Frankly you may be right, but that's what I have read. Really I have no fucking idea what I am talking about....just relying on the media for my info.... :lol

I used to play and I had tons of friends who used to play and I just don't know hardly anyone who does anymore, but that could just be me.

But the corner tavern (an institution that often sponsored softball teams) is also a Chicago tradition which is slowly but surely shrinking in numbers.

... but he was rubbish at maths. :P

You'd think so, but he was quite an intelligent guy too. And really nice. And he sort of looked like a young Paul Newman. In fact, there really wasn't a bad thing about him ... which was more than enough to make me hate him, of course. Except I couldn't. Because he was a friend. And played on my team. And was such a nice guy and all.

I blame this at least partly on the ever increasing number of non-native Chicagoans who move here after college and live in the city or (more recently) nearby suburbs, and take part in softball leagues. No one outside of Chicago has ever seen or hear of 16-inch softball with no gloves, forget about ever playing it. Hence, the 12-inch leagues continue to grow, and the 16-inch leagues are harder to find (although they do fill up, as stated in a previous post). From my experience, these seem to be older guys who grew up with it, rather than younger. Even the leagues out in the burbs now tend to be more 12-inch than 16. On top of this, co-ed teams seem to be on the rise, and have you ever seen a chick throw a 16-inch softball?

Growing up in the burbs, I had never seen anyone play 12-inch slow pitch softball until I went to college in Indiana. Some of my friends still don't believe me that 16-inch even exists. I brought a ball to school once, and they stared at it like it just dropped out of the sky.

My 16-inch league was co-ed (or "co-rec," as they say). We had several women who were very good softball players and who preferred the 16-inch game.

We played up on Peterson -- I think the place was called Hollywood Park. Our team was mostly young people -- the oldest person was a woman who was around 40.

Man, I miss that league. That was ... wow, almost fifteen years ago.

I grew up in Michigan, but I knew about 16-inch softball. I even had a ball from the time I was four or five. My family has strong Chicago ties and history on both sides, though, so that's hardly surprising.

Women were tougher back then.

I think it's less this, and more that there is increasing availability of full sized softball fields. The only reason to play 16 inch is if you're playing in a small urban softball field where it would be too easy to hit a 12 inch softball into the street. There doesn't seem to be much sense in playing 16 inch out in the burbs, except for tradition/habit.

Tower Record's going out of business sale is shaping up quite nicely. I bought the new Bad Brains dvd for 10% off, and scouted out some other crap I'm going to try to snag when the discounts go up. Right now all the books are 20% off...if they get to 50%, I'm gonna grab a few of the 33 1/3 books. And maybe some porn.
