mcs
So, has anyone else out there been lucky enough to catch Glenn Kotche's solo tour? We saw him in Missoula, and I would highly recommend if he is coming to your area that you check it out...I don't know what the venues are like for the shows he is playing with Nels, but this was a VERY small venue, and he hung out in the crowd all night, signing cds and listening to praise. The actual show was absolutely amazing - like nothing I had ever seen. We saw him in San Diego, opening for Jeff solo, and really enjoyed it, but something about the privacy of the setting made it even more fantastic. I always credit Jeff with everything I love about Wilco, but this really made me re-evaluate.
Dreamin'
I saw Glenn and Nels perform at Richard's on Richards in Vancouver last night. The crowd was sparse, but every single person in the room seemed totally into it. Glenn remarked that we were "so nice and quiet and pleasant looking." Glenn's albums are amazing, but seeing him perform takes his greatness to another level. Last night, my husband and I stood in the balcony over the stage so we were able to get a bird's eye view. He opened with a "work in progress" (I forget the title, sorry) and the rest of the setlist was very similar to the Sunken Treasure tour. Monkey Chant is a masterpiece, IMO. Last night, he took some extra time to introduce the "characters," which was pretty cool. The fact that two of my favourite musicians just happen to be in a band with one of my favourite songwriters really blows my mind. By adding such gorgeous colour and texture to Jeff's lyrics, Glenn and Nels make Wilco so much more than the sum of its parts. The percussion on YHF blew me away when I first heard it and I'm sure Nels will deliver some really hot licks on SBS. May 15th can't come soon enough! BTW, I think Glenn may be sporting a mustache again, but it might have just been a shadow.
aricandover
I'm sure Nels will deliver some really hot licks on SBS. I hope you're right thanks for the review. did Nels use any toys?
Hodie
"so nice and quiet and pleasant looking." How very Vancouver of you! I'm so glad you got to go. I love these guys solo. And not.
mcs
Yes, the bird's eye view was key. The club in Missoula was so small (less than 100 max capcity, but packed) Glenn didn't set up on stage, but out on the floor. They asked the people in the front few rows to sit on the ground (thus creating a kindergarden classroom atmosphere Glenn commented upon). We were lucky enough to be standing with our backs to the bar about three feet from his setup, and everyone was sitting down in front of us, so we were basically standing over him. It was very "once in a lifetime". Sorry to miss Nels though, as they didn't do the Missoula show together. I'm still waiting for the opprotunity to see him solo. Dreamin'
did Nels use any toys?Nels had plenty of cool toys, but I don't know if any of them were new (I've been out of the loop, doing the Mommy thing). I was thinking that he'll need to wear a tool belt on stage soon. Here's an article about Glenn from the Tucson Weekly.
Guest Jules
Here's an article about Glenn from the Tucson Weekly. It's not that Kotche is daunted by more formal opportunities. Mobile includes a track, "Clapping Music Variations," on which he performs 12 percussion parts he arranged for an adaptation of a work by minimalist Steve Reich. He'll conduct a percussion ensemble performing the work at Elmhurst College in late spring very cool. I plan on going to the Elmhurst performance. I hope he does some playing as well. WaronWar
I am in too but I think he is just a special guest for the Elmhurst percussion ensemble. However, I hope he does perform something of his own work.

pnêyu
He and Nels were awesome in LA last night, though it was bittersweet in that it was the final date of their tour together. We managed to grab a spot on Glenn's side with a very cool view into his implements and techniques--not that I know what the hell he did with any of them. Still, it was enlightening to match up the actions with the music.
welch79
i saw kotche solo opening for tweedy in nashville a few weeks ago. his performance made me look at the drum kit in a different light.
zebra
I saw him down in Tucson last night and am still in awe. Until you see him play up close and personal, you can't even imagine how good of a musician he is. There were 40 people there at the most. Unfortunately, people were very rigid and quite and didn't seem to respond like he is used to. I will post photos when my brother is done sorting out the over 600 he took. pnêyu
I didn't see this until just now, but the SF Chron ran a cool interview with Glenn: http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g.../02/22/derk.DTL

pnêyu
Thanks, Judy. And it's not Glenn, but I'm partial to this pic I took of Nels in SF:
zebra
There are two new photos gracing my brother's website. If you want to go to the site, check under Portraits and Concert Portfolio to see the photos. If not, here are some links: Glenn and Glenn 2.
