Shorty Long
There's a chance I'll be moving to Chicago to attend grad school at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and I'm wondering if anyone here has any info on the area where the school is located. I've never really spent a substantial amount of time in Chicago, so I'm unfamiliar with the entire city. Any insight is appreciated.
Calexico
You may need to live off campus.
cryptique
Near south side. Up-and-coming area. And they have a Leona's, so it can't be too bad. Now I should really shut up and defer to people who actually still live in Chicago.
LouieB
Near south side. Up-and-coming area. And they have a Leona's, so it can't be too bad. Now I should really shut up and defer to people who actually still live in Chicago. Actually that is an excellent suggestion. The near southside (south of the loop and south of Roosevelt road)has lots to recommend it and it may at this point be out of reach of a down and out student. UIC is on the near southwest side which used to be sort of iffy, but also is now very up and coming (or maybe it already came I don't know.... ) Since the campus is near the Blue line, you can live just about anywhere on the north side and still get their relatively easily. There are some neighborhoods nearby, as well as the medical center, but many have been gentrified and are getting expensive, where they used to be kind of dangerous. The area around the old Little Italy, Chinatown, Pilsen (Mexican neighborhood, which is also rapidly gentrifying) would all be interesting and fun places to live I should think. Duck-Billed Catechist
Really ugly buildings. Stanley Fish runs the school. Conveniently located off 290/The Eisenhower and the Blue Line (one of the elevated trains/subways) Next to the medical district. If I was single and going to school there I'd probably live in Pilsen, which is a gentrifying, predominantly latino neighborhood. 18th street, which is Pilsen's main drag with lots of nice shops and bakeries, is just down the blue line. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower_West_Side,_Chicago

I spoke to some folks who work at Juarez HS the other day and they say so many folks are getting displaced from the neighborhood that Juarez HS, which used to be wildly over crowded and ran three shifts just to serve all its students, is now underpopulated. I suppose it is only a matter of time before the yuppies take over what was a truly unique neighborhood. Pilsen was a place you pretty much needed Spanish to get around in, back a few years ago. Kind of sad really. LouieB
dannygutters
pilsen is cool, but really you could live anywere on the blue line and still be able to get to uic pretty quickly. Assuming you are not there lately... and miss rush hour.. ah just move to pilsen. You can get del rey chips from the factory! they are the best. Also, if you watch the movie 'Stranger than Fiction' much of it is shot at UIC.

Edie
I went there but haven't stepped foot on the campus since I graduated like 20 years ago. I lived in an area about 1.5 miles away that at the time cost $350/mo for rent and now has $500K+ townhomes. Just check places along the CTA's blue line -- for a time I lived in Logan Sq and wicker park -- and you can't go wrong, really.
Shorty Long
Thanks for the info. I'll be making a trip out in April to scope it out myself.
burns3
I went there and took the Blue Line from the Jefferson Park stop for two years. It's not a bad trip if you want to live north.
Analogman
I will also add that threads such as this could somewhat answered in a FAQ - if this place had one.
explodo
Stanley Fish runs the school. This is a scary thought.
