emails are so impersonal

Recommended Posts

for example, I have a friend that I communicate with mostly through email. I can say something that is sincere but kind of in a jokingly matter, where they may or may not take it as a compliment.

like I'll say, just a random example, 'I like nasty, hairy-faced rock star types, like you,' which is meant as a compliment. then they would say something like, 'Nice,' which could mean, 'that's nice that you think that,' or 'nice one asshole.'

anyone else have this problem? please discuss.

Ok...after reading the responses on this thread, I thought I'd try something new and novel: responding on topic.

It is not limited to email; it is inherent in all written communications. Email might have cheapened written intersocial communication due to its immediacy and ease but the written word in incapable of conveying sarcasm, tone or, in reality ,irony.

In our post modern word, we have taken for granted the immediacy that phone communication allows. Additionally, the tendency to feel a need to be constantly 'on' (i.e., witty, ironic, funny) has done nothing to help this. We all either want to be Jerry Seinfield, Larry David, David Mamet or Cormac McCarthy.

We all are staring in our own movie...we have to have the perfect rejoinder, have to always to funny.

Actually, emoticons are available to anyone who can display text.

8==D~~ :-O->-

Available...but obscure.

Take flick's statment that caused confusion;

'I like nasty, hairy-faced rock star types, like you" Add an emoticon

'I like nasty, hairy-faced rock star types, like you :cheekkiss

Clearer...maybe

Take the response

"Nice" add an emoticon

"Nice" :shifty "Nice" :thumbup "Nice" :ohwell

Maybe clearer ... the problem is not necessarily the medium. It may be the message conveyed.

"You don't have to be a star to be in my show"

Internet bravery

What does internet bravery mean? That I wouldn't call you a sanctimonious prick to your face? Sadly, I doubt we'll ever find out. As for the comment about "the normal noise around here," the same applies to you thinking you need to tell everyone how to behave. If you want to speak to the topic of a thread, do it, but save your lectures for your substitute teaching gig. We were speaking to the topic as well, if in an unconventional manner. Illustrating Jess's point, if you will. There's nothing wrong with having a little fun. You might give it a shot sometime.
