Kansas City and Omaha

Recommended Posts

I will be out in the heartland in July for a few days. Was wondering who has been to these places, are there any good sidetrips recommended (Council Bluffs, Lawrence, Lincoln?) Also what are the best BBQ Places and Steakhouses in either city. Please let me know if there are any must see places too! Thanks! :thumbup

I know that people will tell you to visit the more famous bbq places in KC (Bryant's and Gates), but there are two others that I would suggest more passionately.

LC's is right around the corner from my house, and it is suffering to drive past there every afternoon and fill my car with the enticing fragrance issuing from his smokestack. I suggest making a meal out of the fries and baked beans. :P

Cauldron full of baked beans. ^

It's one of those lesser known places that cabbies and old musicians will tell you about. LC's.

The other place is very popular among the urban crowd, and deservedly so. It's called Oklahoma Joe's. The Carolina style pulled pork sandwich is amazing. Oklahoma Joe's.

I hope you have a great time!

here's some good touristy stuff:

Boulevard Brewery Tour

www.boulevard.com

KC Royals baseball - beautiful stadium! not much to do around the area, though. they serve Gates BBQ in the stadium.

Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

American Jazz Museum

Truman Presidential Library

I haven't made it to LC's but can recommend Arthur Bryant's BBQ - but expect to wait a while in line. Pretty sure that wherever you go in KC, the BBQ will be good! I know Boulevard Brewery has expanded and they offer more tours than they used to. Chris may have some more things to offer - she's the resident KC guru!

The Jazz Museaum and Truman Library are right up my alley. Thanks for the good pointers. Presidential Libraries are some of the best versions of US history around! :yes

you know, i had absolutely no interest in going to a Pres. museum/library, but when me and my buddy were in KC for a Royals/Cards game, he mentioned it was about 5 miles from our hotel (he's into history) and we had an afternoon to kill, so we went and I really liked it (it may have been due to the BBQ/beer sitting in my stomach!). so much so, that i've been to the LBJ and Clinton museums/libraries and hope to go to the Eisenhower one in Abilene, KS. But yeah, it's a pretty great version of US history...

I have family in the KC area and get out there from time to time - and still have yet to go to the NLBM - every time I am there I want to go, and never have enough time. One of these days I will get out there specifically just to visit the museum.

I was at the Johnson, Carter & Kennedy Museaums...all beautiful archetecture and great documented history at all 3. Unfortunatley the Royals will not be in town when I am there!

There is another wonderful library which is open to the public. It is the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering & Technology , located on the grounds of the University of Missouri Kansas City. The grounds of this library are an attraction unto themselves.

I tend to frequent the fine art museums. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, are within walking distance of each other. I have already visited these museums three times this year.

Also within walking distance of those two museums is the Country Club Plaza, the outdoor shopping and entertainment district which was modeled after the architecture of Seville, Spain. This entire area is architecturally beautiful, and most inviting for walking and sightseeing.

The nice feature of KC is the ease of getting around the central part of the city by car. Public transportation is nothing to brag about, but traffic is pretty light and not as intimidating as Chicago or NY.

My dad grew up in KC and I still have some family there. It's a really great city. Lawerence is a cool little town with a lot to check out if you want to make the drive. Try Rosedale BBQ for sure.

I wish I could convince Graham that moving to Lawrence is a good idea......I would love to.

Heck, he was born there!

Lawrence is one of my all time favorite towns! (not that it has any bearing on anything. :P )

Christine,

What's the word on the WWI museum in KC?

Clay, it finally opened last year. I have yet to visit, though I have heard that it is wonderful. This is another part of the city that is chock full of interesting things to do. Union Station/Science City, Crown Center/Hallmark and the WWI Museum are all within walking distance of each other. In fact, and this is pretty cool, much of it is connected by elevated, covered walkways.
